Trust Me, It's A Scam

Posted by Gerasimos, Oct 11 2009, 06:40 PM

So this week as I stood at the grand exchange I was subjected once again to the relentless merchant clan spamming. Seeing as it was about 3 am and there were a grand total of five people at the G.E. I suggested he should probably advertise later. Well he went on to tell me that the clan leaders needed him to advertise a certain number of hours so that they could all make money. This is where I should have just kept my thoughts to myself and gone about my business. But of course I just couldn't help myself and told him that it is nice that you get to work for your clan leaders before losing all your cash to your clan leaders.

Well this is where one of the other people at the exchange told me that merch clans make so much money and it is the only way to get rich. I of course responded back that merch clans were just the leaders manipulating and stealing from the lower clan members. In short I ended up in a retarded debate with the two of them where I only managed to further progress towards a brain anuerism.

Now first of all I am not against merching at all and I think it is a great way to make money. But as for clan merching, well that is a different story. But being a low ranked clan member is just going to end up getting you robbed blind if you do what the clan leaders tell you to do. Now obviously if you are the first one in your clan to buy and sell after your leaders announce it you will make a bunch of money possibly. But it is more likely that this is going to happen to you.

Now in a merch clan the leaders know several days ahead of time what the next merchant item is going to be and spend there time buying up as much of the item as possible. After they have the item that they want they then give the item name to the clan members and then you are only going to be getting an item for its maximum price. The sudden demand causes the obvious inflation on the item but if you notice there is almost always a sudden drop in the rate of inflation that comes right before the big crash. That is the leaders selling of the items they bought before announcing the dump to the clan. Of course the clan members are still buying out as much of the item as they can when the leaders are selling; so the members in turn end up buying out the leaders items. Once the leaders have sold all the items they have to the clan they announce the dump. Now at this point you will be lucky to sell even one of the merchanted item because of the sudden flood of the item into the market. Also the real demand for the item is still down there on that little blue line. The fact is no one is going to mass buy an item when it is merched anyways. The people who can afford to do that are not retarded and will wait till after the crash to buy large quantities of the item.

So in reality a merch clan is just a means for the leaders to make money while the rest of the clan gets screwed over. So go head and solo merch all you want. Just don't end up spamming and advertising for a guy before handing all your money over to him.

Yep, I was involved in a Merch Clan, and I lost a couple hundred thousand gp.

Nice blog. I learned something too, as I never knew what the blue line signified. So that's the real demand line. Nice one!

That really sucks man, I hate the idea that people are willing to take hours of work in gp away from people. It is just low.

I appreciate the blog. I cried with laughter over 'give a noob a monkfish' and the rest have secured you in my 'must read' list.
