QUOTE(Jagex)
Following yesterday's update to Rule 7 and Rule 9, we have tweaked them both a bit more - to take into account some constructive feedback and thoughts we've had on the matter. Thanks to the people who have been helping us get these right rather than just ranting at us! Particularly our thanks to Strider. We believe the latest revision is still just as good at protecting our users, which is very important to us, but is also less restrictive (which is also important to us!). Please take the time to re-read both rules and make sure you fully understand them. Thanks.
Of course, having said all that we should remind everyone that downloading third party RuneScape programs is potentially extremely dangerous and still not at all recommended. Please be aware that there are programs out there which claim to be a cool RuneScape add-on, but actually install a keylogger on your computer and steal your password! You should also be aware that there are such programs around that won't necessarily be spotted by your anti-virus software. Scanning downloads is, of course, a very good idea but it still doesn't 100% eliminate the risk.

EDIT: I thought I would add this here too.
From reading the sticky in the official forums it seems that SS, in it's current form, is still illegal. Changes would have to be made to it to not allow people to click on worlds that are full, thus giving them an unfair advantage.

Since Strider was mentioned in the update, I'm guessing he'll be coming out with an new version of SS that takes care of that.

EDIT 2: Here are some of Jagex's guidelines for 3rd party software:
QUOTE(Jagex)
- When viewing a free world on a computer display with a resolution higher than 800 x 600, the game pane should default to at least 710 pixels high, and must not be able to scroll vertically. I.e. the game pane must be displayed in such a way that both the game and advert are fully visible at the same time (otherwise it encourages users to break Rule 11).

- The program should not allow worlds marked as 'FULL' on the world select page to be selected (otherwise it encourages users to break Rule 7 - unfair advantage).

- If the program has its own integrated chat feature separate from the RuneScape chat, it should make it very clear to users that this chat is not part of RuneScape and is not official, endorsed or moderated by Jagex in any way. Furthermore, this chat should still be moderated (just not by us), and the moderators should not allow chat which infringes our rules of conduct. All the rules are important, but in particular if Rule 3 or Rule 9 are regularly breached on the external chat, the program will be considered to endanger users or encourage rule breaking. To avoid confusion with the official RuneScape chat, moderators of the external chat should not be indicated with a silver or gold crown. If the chat is IRC based, then the program should only allow access to IRC channels which conform with the above.

- The program should not contain adverts or links to websites which encourage rule breaking or endanger users.
If SS currently does any of those things, it's against the rules to use it.

EDIT 3: Thanks vausey and darkwolf455 pointing it out below! smile.gif

It is still unclear wheather or not ss is legal or not (I hope a jagex mod posts the current stance on SS).

Off topic; the marches owned ( I went on one). That and the 1.1k page topic on why ss should be legal tongue.gif.

They added that, which suggests that they took it all back. Plus the wording of the update on the main page suggests that. Meh, never effected me anyway tongue.gif

They revised the rules slightly to permit third party clients that don't offer an unfair advantage.

I could swear that they have just been reverted back to normal again.

I wonder why it's so bad to click on full worlds; Jagex could just let people click on full world links and let them try to get in.. mellow.gif

Yes, that is for sure. Strider and Jagex have at least been in contact, and must have come to some compromise. We will definitely see SS updated soon.

Please! Don't say things unless you understand all the details. It seems pretty obvious that SS is still NOT legal. Unless you can say that it doesn't do any of the things listed in the first post.

A few days ago Jagex said it is suggested not to use any 3rd party software, then they banned all 3rd party software, now they are saying any 3rd part software must meet certain guidelines or it's not allowed, i.e. you could be banned for using it.

To clarify again -

No SS currently does not meet our guidelines for use within the Runescape rules yet.

No we did not make these changes due to "rioting" spoilt little kiddies. I couldn't care what that sort of player thinks.
