which might be better for playing RS Nvidia or Ati?
im a long user of Nvidia cards because they had great support *drivers archived on site] but their support has faltered and is no better than the rest. So im wondering if ati might be better for RS HD? and what might the best model/level/rating of 4/8X AGP card choice be for small screen HD - i dont care for full screen playing. [a personal preferrance] full screen is ok on a 24" WD, but too much for training[IMO]. ive Nvidia Quadro 140M on my thinkpad & it works great. but i would like to upgrade a couple desktops with AGP cards and im building another - because thats what i do for fun. I just would like to know if RS works better with Nvidia or ati and which models are great to best? thanks for your recommendations & input. *other games are not really important as most i & my PC users play are the old ones which run fine on the old nvidia 400 series boards - but RS enjoyment requires something better ive played with the ati 8800 board & that was pretty sweet on RS,but is RS better with a certain chipset? |

Runescape HD isn't very 'hungry'. Nothing would have problems running it, pretty much. I'm sure people are going to recommend ATI, simply because they have more raw power but can you tell us what else you would be using it for, what you budget is etc.? Then perhaps we can give you actual suggestions.

Honestly, as long as you get a newer card, it really doesn't matter what brand it is. Without you giving me a target price, its really hard to suggest a card.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814131070 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814130465 ^^I would probably recommend those, they are both adequate for rs HD etc. I'm no expert on AGP video cards though. |

Current gen ATI cards are faster and cheaper than Nvidia.

Nvidia is for those who want performance and great power, you get what you pay for.
ATi are usually the person on budget's choice but you can still get very powerful cards for great prices, like the HD 4890 for example which is only £200. That's the main reason people choose ATi over Nvidia. If you wanted a good card that will play runescape HD with all max, id recommend a Radeon HD 4650 or 4670, cheap cards great for these games that dont require alot of graphical power. (I tested RSHD with my laptop, which has a 8400m GS in it, it played RSHD all maxed including AA. the 4650/4670 is heaps better than that card.) Seriously though, if he is buying an AGP card, then brand doesn't matter *that* much.

Red, it's like CPUs though. The clock speed isn't all that matters. Sure, ATI's have considerably more raw power but nVidia cards i find a generally better built and have better... other specs. Like FSB and whatnot on CPUs.

It helps if you tell us where you are from so I can look on appropriate sites to find you a graphics card.
I can look for AGP card that is good for RSHD for you, ill edit this post once I have. This post has been edited by MrBiggles5: Apr 25 2009, 11:47 AM |

It helps if you tell us where you are from so I can look on appropriate sites to find you a graphics card. I can look for AGP card that is good for RSHD for you, ill edit this post once I have. im in the U.S. & newegg is my current favorite parts place, but im open to new places. the first will be for moms PC - its an old tiger AMD based box & limited to 4X agp & the current card is a cheapie. (an nvidia 16mb TNT) [yep a toss away now] it works, but pretty choppy on standard play. im thinking of the following for her upgrade: POWERCOLOR AGP Radeon X1650PRO 256MB 64-bit GDDR2 AGP 4X/8X Video Card - Retail (h**p://***.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131134) its about $44 usd plus shipping & hey its mighty cheap upgrade. this should be fine for her as RSHD is her only "high" demand game it should work & its under $50 usd - wow these cards are dropping in price - nice! [i didnt post the site link as many forums are a little picky about links to other sites] ive added powercolor brand cards to old boxes & they work. much of the PC i work on are for seniors and office work - so graphics has not been a priority. now ive a few family mems & a couple buds that are wanting to upgrade so they can see the RSHD as well or Better than i can on my thinkpad nvidia quadro 140M produces - im sure this wont take much to out perform it and at a more reasonable cost the Nvidia 6200 series cards look good too,but as mentioned their power/speed is limited. BUT if RS works better with Nvidia. If the 6200 series cards will do the RSHD as well. - remembering that RS the priority of this upgrade for Mom would it be best to match RS in the Nvidia choice? yup im more impressed with the potential of the ati card abilities & i will try 1 of them on my home experiment box next winter when its more fun inside than out <smile> but Mom wants her RSHD now - lol thanks for all the input. i am reading the ideas here as im not even close to current when it comes to the better graphics of today. |

Mom & my sister clan up to see the sights, mine gold n treasure, fish & train some, but fishing is first. - just like many guys in the real world Mom wants the better RSHD to see the flowers better - priorities are all a P.O.V. each player has their reasons to play. yeah that would work well If the motherboard had AGP 8X - sadly the machines that ppl want upgraded are only 4X - bummer. but i do see that the ati boards have more potential power wise than the 4X nvida boards ive seen so far. and the hopes ppl have is a cheap upgrade. for some reason ppl dont see the need for a new motherboard,CPU & faster RAM so they can have more power than they will be using. shucks - id like to build something current - with others ppls money of course i built a few cutting edge boxes - about 3 years ago & they sold fast when ppl saw me use my new toy. but like a goof ive not taken the time to research the new stuff to do it again - it seems $500 will get a better bang now than it did 3 years ago - but really im not wanting to go into PC building business & i seldom use a desktop anymore as i travel on never ending vacation. every new desk top i build for me gets sold when ppl see them. then i get stuck with my old slow 2gz box i keep on the back bench - nvidia FX 5200 [not quit smooth enuff for RSHD] - it was fast in its day - 5 years ago lol |

I'm going to be honest that its really going to be a hit or miss with that card.
First off RS HD is a bit more GPU intensive then people point out and being limited to a 64bit bus and agp 4x just worsens the situation. And secondly being limited to such a old socket must mean the CPU is pretty old to. Most likely a first generation P4. All i'm saying is there is a serious bandwidth bottleneck with AGP This post has been edited by The Angel Bunny: Apr 25 2009, 02:12 PM |

Comparing GPU clock speeds? Comparing different uarcs? In order GPU's are now processors? Dear god.
Why waste $50 on a AGP card? you'll get away fine with a new board + IGP if runescape HD is the concern. Even if you needed a new processor it's not out of reach; http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDet...st=Combo.176233 http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDet...st=Combo.178929 (RAM is dirt cheap) Both should be able to handle Runescape HD and provide a substantial upgrade. If you have a S775 processor you might just need a new motherboard. I wouldn't recommend investing in a AGP card otherwise the 3450 above should be fine. |
