When making a new partition with Gparted, should I make my 30gb win7 partition unallocated or NTFS?

And if someone can answer this question.

To all of those who are unaware,

Windows 7 RC1 will shut down every two hours starting March 2010. It will then cease to function in June 2010.

After that, you need to rebuild.

Of course, I bet there will be a crack or something that will get past it. tongue.gif

I still haven't gotten around to installing...

Ok, I was having some trouble with partitions, but I got it sorted out. Gparted is editing the partitions now and then I'll install. biggrin.gif

I just finished installing Build 7100. It's really nice. Graphics look excellent and the speed is great! What anti-virus have you guys chose to install?

On a suggestion from bob-sama I'm trying out AntiVir, but Avast and AVG work too.

Windows 7 is the next operating system from Microsoft. RC stands for Release Candidate, which means that Windows 7 is in it's final testing stages. smile.gif

It's pretty much the stage after the Beta. Windows 7 is a new OS (like xp and vista) that's coming out in 2010. This free version only lasts until june 1 2010, so after the trial period you have to reinstall it with one you buy.

Anyways, I've had a terrible experience with this. I used gparted to resize and create partitions, but I was messing around seeing how much space was good, so I had to wait 5x as long because it had to resize from 30 to 25 back to 30 then to 15 then to 16. So my laptop's hard drive is getting incredibly hot after three hours, I leave the computer on to go to sleep. I wake up and it's finished (yay) and I succesfully install Win7. BUT I had NO IDEA IT WAS GOING TO DELETE GRUB!!! And I just threw my Ubuntu disk away a couple weeks ago because it was the old version...

So now I have to redownload Ubuntu then pop in the disk and recover Grub...

And I'm never going to use win7. cry.gif

Ok, I couldn't reinstall grub, so this kinda sucks, partially. I just deleted my whole ubuntu partition and resized windows 7 to 40gb. I'm going to go test if I can run games from a different partition from 7. I can already open up files from Win7 on Vista (Win7 is drive G:, although I have no idea how this happened...). Maybe I can run some games better. tongue.gif

Can't run combat arms, but I can run firefox. Meh, better than nothing.

I've got it running on my iMac. I actually quite like it; they've clearly listened to a lot of the feedback regarding Vista. Unfortunately the Boot Camp software isn't compatible yet with Windows 7.

I like the new task bar, but it does look like they tried to copy the Dock on Mac with it. tongue.gif

Think of it more as a changing of times rather than a copy. I believe we've discussed this in the past and it was realized that Mac wasn't the first to offer this feature. No matter who had the original idea, I think it's a change of the times. If people like a feature, the developers should try to suit the customer's wants and needs.

Maybe you're right, I was just describing it from a mac-user point of view, because to me it looks really similar. I'm not trying to say that Microsoft are being copycats however. I like the change.

Am I the only person who doesn't like the dock at all? I think it's way too large (width wise) and takes up too much screen space. And I don't like the notification area. slanty.gif

It's just too much like Vista with a few tweaks that I'm not compelled to change to it, so I'm sticking with Vista for now. And people always say that Vista takes way too many clicks to do basic tasks, well I've set up my Vista to be extremely streamlined, and I'm not in the mood to do it again for 7. tongue.gif

I do like how it only takes up 30% of my memory instead of 50%, though. Although I never really go above 80% with Vista unless I'm rendering videos or something.

I'm typing this from my laptop now with Win 7 RC. It's fantastic: big speed improvements over Vista, it looks good, lots of new features and perfectly stable enough for day-to-day use. The only thing I would say is, like many people have been saying, install it on a separate partition and don't do an upgrade. Hopefully mine was an isolated case, but when I did an upgrade it completely trashed everything - blue screens all over the place. Luckily I'd backed up my files and a clean install sorted it smile.gif

@redmonke: Microsoft are aiming for a Summer 2009 release, not 2010 (article here).

It's a tiny amount, but appearance doesn't really matter to me either way. Performance does.
