Today when I got home I was really excited. Apple has finally released the O.S. 3 for the iPod Touch, and I could finally get it. On their site, they said that it was a "Free Update for all users."
It now turns out that everyone with an iPhone can get the update for free. I have an iTouch... If I want the O.S. 3 for my iTouch, I have to pay $10... WTF? Good Fight Apple... Good Fight ~Vincent EDIT: QUOTE (Apple.com 3.0 Software Update Section) The free iPhone OS 3.0 Software Update includes some great new features, as well as all the features from previous updates. iPhone OS 3.0 also lets you run the next generation of iPhone apps, like peer-to-peer games1 and more. If you’ve never updated before, now is the perfect time.

Well, saying it is free, and then charging you for it, isn't really a good explanation. They could have at least said that iTouch users would have to pay for it, instead of saying in general that it was free

QUOTE (Apple) Current iPhone owners can download the software from iTunes for free, and iPod Touch users can get it as well, but for a fee of $9.95, just like the last OS update. Nobody is hiding any facts, and frankly, $10 is reasonable. How old are you? This post has been edited by Definition: Jun 17 2009, 01:57 PM |

The update is out on torrents, but I'm not recommending that route.

Let me clarify:
I knew there was going to be a cost. $10 is ridiculous. I'll wait until O.S. 4 comes out and O.S. 3 is free ~Vincent |

Charging for an update just isn't on. Updates are generally things that you forgot or didn't have time to put on at launch, and fixes to bugs that you made. You don't get to charge for these, you should be paying them if anything.

You don't get to charge for these, you should be paying them if anything. So if I have a copy of Windows 3.1 I should be entitled to copies of Windows 95, 98, ME, XP, Vista and 7? Come on. EDIT: the hell, the cheapest one costs €219 (which is about 280 dollars) and you complain about ten dollars (€7.99 for Europe, by the way)? Only one word can suffice as a reply, and it is "wat". 1. I can only put money on my iTunes account once a month, if I am lucky.
2. iPhone users get this for free. Why shouldn't we? Just because they pay for the service? We bought all the software, and just because we already have a phone and don't need an iPhone, doesn't mean we aren't entitled to this update for free. ~Vincent |

You're assuming that it's a constant function, rather than a partial. Apple receives a premium for iPhone users. Monthly, iPhone users pay extra for their "iPhone plans", rather than a normal phone. That premium goes to the provider's profit, and to Apple, because they created the iPhone. So it's like f(x)=$Premium(x)+$199. |

Iphone users are paying way more than Touch users. We get the update for free because we pay to use their phone. If you paid to use the Touch you'd get it free too. |

AT&T then gives a percentage of the profits to Apple for offering the service on their product
It gives them both a pretty good profit. Still though, just because they pay for the service doesn't mean WE should be paying for it. ~Vincent |

Or ATT buys the phones from Apple, then sells them to you with a contract for 2 years, that way you get the phone for 1/3 of the price while paying for it over time. Then ATT goes and says to Apple, HEY I WANT YOUR IPHONE FOR THE NEXT 5 YEARS, I'LL PAY YOU 10238120932304 DOLLARS.

You don't pay monthly, apple doesnt get a portion of that. Apple wants more money, they charge people who don't pay monthly for the upgrade. People who have iTouches buy the upgrade, apple gets more money. Apple is happy, apple doesn't care about you. Calm down. |

You're paying ATT monthly, not Apple. That doesn't mean that Apple doesn't get a cut. They share off ATT's profits. That's why the iPhone 36 (8GB) is now $99, and not $259 (iPod Touch) AT&T then gives a percentage of the profits to Apple for offering the service on their product It gives them both a pretty good profit. Still though, just because they pay for the service doesn't mean WE should be paying for it. ~Vincent Listen, a public education is free, but it isn't cheap. Think about that. iPhone customers are paying so much more, $60 a month (at the least). A $10 upgrade seems more of a bargain. Try paying the bills, trust me, you don't know. ..and you aren't paying for it. You're just paying for the software upgrade. This post has been edited by Definition: Jun 17 2009, 08:43 PM |

It's free for iPhone users because they are a subscriber. It's paid for Touch users because they are a purchaser instead. There's legal stuff behind all of this. Because iPhone users are subscribers, they do not have to pay for upgrades (note: not update, an upgrade to 3.0). But because iPod Touch users purchase their device outright, they are required by law to have to pay something for the upgrade. I know it's weird, but it's not the first time Apple has had to do this. They had to do the same thing when they enabled Wireless-N on some of their MacBooks - it was a $2.49 CDN charge. It was another one of those legal situations.
Apple doesn't really care about the money they make from 3.0 software sales, they don't make a huge amount. Well, they could. 40,000,000 iPhone/iPod Touch owners = ~$200,000,000 revenue possibly. Apple has to charge for Touch owners because of legal issues, not just because they could. And it's $10, that's not breaking the bank. You can wait a year for 4.0 if you want to. I'm not, I already updated my Touch and (gasp!) paid the $10 gladly. ~Bcloutier~ |
