Basically, what is you're favorite Linux distribution? Which one do you use? Sorry i couldn't come up with more Unix distros though, just off the top of my head
Still, i'm trying to work out which one/s i should use. This should help me a lot, because at the minute i like the look of them all, but they're not really different enough for me to have all of them at once. This isn't the sole purpose of the topic though, talk about Linux, ask questions, whatever. |

My favourite Linux distro is Linux Mint. Looks nice, has better out-of-the-box compatibility than Ubuntu (which it's based on), and is a great distro to recommend to Linux newbies. Although I gather you're not quite a Linux newbie
lol nevarrrrr Seriously though, Linux is a cool OS, but it does still get beaten by Windows/OS X in some areas. This post has been edited by Cattius: Jun 28 2009, 11:28 AM |

Linux is just the Kernel that the OS uses, not really an OS in itself. And the only area really that it gets beaten in (imo) is compatibility, and that's only because not enough people use it.

I appreciate that it isn't actually an OS. But it's easier to talk about 'Windows, OS X and Linux' OSs than 'Windows, Mac and Linux kernel-based' OSs, for me at least I don't want to turn this into a Windows v. Linux debate, which was why I was deliberately vague. Personally I think all three of the 'major' OSs have their good and bad points, and which is best all depends on what a person is looking for from an OS. |

Yes, but everybody's entitled to an opinion. In mine, if enough people actually used Linux then it would be like this:
1) Linux 2) Windows 3) OSX 4) Unix instead of this: 1) Windows 2) OSX 3) Linux 4) Unix Actually i'm not sure about the last one. Is Linux more popular than OSX? |

Actually i'm not sure about the last one. Is Linux more popular than OSX? According to this site, OS X has a just under 10% market share, and Linux just under 1%. |

I used Ubuntu for quite a while and got really good with it. It's just so confusing though. Too many commands needed to do stuff.

Problem with Linux Distros is their is just so damn many of them.
May be one reason why it may not take off since it can't be successfully marketed. |

I think it's not successfully marketed because most of them are free, which means there's little money going to the people who make them, which means a lot less is spent on advertising.

Personally, I use Ubuntu, and Xubuntu when I need less power. I do like Mac OSX, as it's built off UNIX. But, if you're going to get any Distro, i'd recommend Ubuntu. To me, it was the easiest to learn. It's a major swap from Windows, but that'll happen when you swap OS.

I'm starting to lean towards Linux Mint, and not just because i love the design of their website. Basically, it's Ubuntu and then some.

I agree with Caboose, you clearly don't understand what Linux is. Linux is a kernel (as Caboose pointed out earlier), from which people build operating systems called 'distros' or 'distributions'. You are talking about an open-source image editor. And GNU does not stand for 'Gimp Not Unix'; it is a recursive acronym for 'GNU's Not Unix'. QUOTE I'm starting to lean towards Linux Mint, and not just because i love the design of their website. Basically, it's Ubuntu and then some. Yay, I've managed to convert you to it |
