One of the local banks were upgrading all of their computer equipment so they donated all their old stuff to my school. I got one their P4s for free, and I'm not allowed to tell you how I got my software... So far I've spent 0¢ on hardware and 0¢ on software.

I usually get my computers from my parents, so I don't spend any money on them.

So if I spent no money on software, I pirated it?
Theres loads of free software out there.
Everything after I brought the computer, I have spent no money on it.

On my current computer (Celeron Northwood), $100 for hardware and untold amounts of riches wasted on software (games)... probably 20+ games at $35/each average means I've probably spent over $700. Wow... I wish I could sell a lot of it back for full price!!

well opensource than i guess, ya games can cause u to waste a lot of money! and they drop prices too fast i spent 50 on a new game and like 2 weeks later its 10 for like 5 of those games.

Never had that happen--most titles I get are between $40 and $50 for the basegame, not to mention the $20-$30 for expansion packs. They're still in the range for months later.

I have spent $2200 in hardware in the past 6 months, and nothing in software in the past 6 months.
I can't go back any further, because I can't remember to be honest. I don't keep a tally chart of money spent on hardware and software.

Open-source is not always Freeware

I've spent nothing on my computer yet but once the warranty has gone i plan to double the RAM to 2gb and buy a 512mb GPU with HDMI output

So probably a Radeon HD 2400 or 2600? Those are pretty good cards for hardware-accelerated H.264 and VC-1 HD content (HD DVD and BluRay, respecitively, plus a HDMI-out with audio over DVI-D).
Why do you need a 512MB graphics card? I've not seen any games over about 1680x1050 that would require more then 256MB of G-RAM.

Not a lot on hardware, I'd spend more on software although like most people I get most of my software for free. Only I get them legally.
M$ stuff directly from M$ for free, other's I usually just get a freeware alternative. Plus I usually get discounts for softwares so I don't pay the full price.

I've spent about $1500 on my hardware. With all the games I have, it still doesn't come close.

One thing....Warranty, I don't want to void it incase i have a problem with it. It's still got till July 31st 2008 before it expires too by then for top notch games may possibly need that amount, If i see fit i'd get 256MB
and lets be honest Intel Accelerated Onboard graphics are not that immense
