General Battle Rules/Guidelines
I've noticed a few places where people are unclear about the specific rules of a battle. To clear things up, here are the basic rules of a battle. Unless otherwise stated in the topic, these are the rules.
1. The work must be yours, with no help given when making it. This means tutorials, PSD references, etc are NOT allowed.
2. The first person to reach 7 votes is declared winner.
3. You must give a reason when voting. "I like the render" is not a reason, you need to be specific. Something like "I really like the coloring" is acceptable.
4. To start a battle, you should make a topic. In it, include all of the rules of the battle.
5. You may also want to have a theme for the battle. This will make it so the entries are similar in some way. "Freestyle" means you can do anything. Here some suggestions of themes you might want to have:
- No render, no c4d, something of that sort
- Photo must be used
- Abstract
- Specific render must be used (such as "anime", "video game", or even a specific TV show, like "the simpsons")
6. Of course you can change these rules all you want, these are just the standard basic battle rules I have seen people use.

Signature of the Week Rules
Unless the host specifically states that different rules apply, these are the rules for all SotW competitions.

Entries
The SotW host will state the theme and due date for entries. Entries will be accepted until that date, or when the entry topic is created, whichever is second.

You may make a total of ONE post in the entry topic. Your entry will be placed in this post. To change your entry, you will edit your original post and replace your original entry with the updated version. All discussion of the SotW will occur elsewhere, such as in this thread.

The rules for entries are as follows:
- The size must be between 300x100 and 500x200 pixels (WxH).
- The signature must be made less than a week before the entry topic was made.
- Remember, you may only make one post in the entry topic!
- You may not use any tutorials, PSDs, or any other outside help to make your entry.
- If there is a required theme or stock, it must be clearly visible on the final piece. This is up to the discretion of the host.
- It is requested that when you post your entry, you include the following in a code box in your post:
CODE
Your Name: [img]your signature[/img]

Voting
A topic will be created by the host in which all signatures are listed and anyone may vote. These are the rules for voting:
- You may vote for up to three entries.
- You must make it clear which signature is your favorite, second favorite, and third favorite.
- Points will be awarded for favorite signatures (3 pts), second favorite (2 pts), and third favorite (1 pt)
- You must give reasons for your votes. This reason must be something to do with what the artist has done in the signature (eg: color, style, blending).

Results
Following voting, the host will likely create a topic with results. Alternatively, the host may choose to include the results in the voting topic's first post or in a new post, in which case the host will change the title or description of the voting topic to make it clear that results are up. This topic or post will include at least the names, signatures, and points for the top three places. If the host wishes, s/he may include results for more entrants.

The winner will host the following week's SotW, unless s/he hosted the previous week OR is unable to host. If the winner does not host, then whoever got second place will host. In the event of a tie, whoever has gone longer without hosting a SotW will host.

Fortnightly Large Piece Competitions
Rules are:
- The large piece must be between 500x500 and 1024x768 pixels.
- The large piece must be made no more than two weeks before the entry topic was made.
- Your Sal's username or an abbreviation of it must be on your piece.
- No layer ripping, or ripping of any kind off other people's work. No collabs.
- The total competition will last two weeks. 9 days for entries, and 5 days for voting.
- You cannot use the same piece for two different FLPCs (here on Sal's)

Voting Rules are:
- You can vote for three entries. Your favorite one will get three points, your second choice will get two points, and your third choice will get one point.
- Make sure to be clear about what you mean. "1 - Steve, because (reason here)" is hard to understand. Do you mean that's your favorite one, so I should get three points? Or do you mean that you want it to get one point?
- You must give reasons for your votes. "I like the render" isn't a valid reason. It needs to be something to do with what the artist has done in the LP. Examples of acceptable reasons are colour, style, and blending (you will need to explain past a single word though).

I just want to let you know that you can't use renders from deviantART as your own. Unless you credit. And it also doesn't have renders, but stocks. But crediting is a must, but since nobody does it, I suggest you just remove the link to it.

Swagga
GameRenders isn't working for me, and the Render World link, takes me to another site. Just saying. Very explained though, looks nice.

As a general rule, people say "Don't use anything from deviantART, its illegal." That's wrong, though. The one link to dA that is included is to a render pack found in the Resources section of the site. The only content from dA you may use (unless permission is specifically given otherwise) is found in the Resources section of the site. Its also a good idea to look at the person's profile to see if they mention any rules about using their resources.

Not crediting someone from dA is no worse than not crediting any other site. The way you put it implies that I need to remove the dA link because nobody credits. confused.gif Also, dA has both stocks and renders. C4Ds (or other 3D images) are renders, and there is a lot of stock photography as well.

Thanks Rocky, I'll remove the Render World link. smile.gif

another attempt ?

lets hope it gets sticky this time.

I check every site, and I've removed the ones that don't exist anymore. smile.gif

I also think this should include tutorial websites for both GIMP and PS.
Steve
If you have any suggestions, please post them. smile.gif I think both brush and tutorial sites would be very useful, but I don't really know of any. I could add in dA and GR, but I don't really know what they've got to offer. Someone who uses these sites often would be much better at making a list of these than I would be.

why 60 kb? can't we use more for sotw, because you can always make a compressed one for your sig, and keep the good quality for sotw or something.

A little over a year ago when this topic was first made, those were the standard rules for SoTWs. I agree that it isn't a necessary rule, though. I'll remove it now. smile.gif

EDIT: I also added in the line "Interpretation of the theme is at the discretion of the host." Sometimes the theme will be something like "sports", which is up to a lot of interpretation. Basically that just means that the host of the SoTW chooses what counts as a sport and what doesn't.

I don't really like that rule. If someone doesn't want to vote, he shouldn't have to. You aren't allowed to vote for yourself, so if I genuinely think that my entry is the best, I might not want to give someone else 3pts because I wouldn't think that he deserves it. Or maybe there are a few entries that I think are all equally good, and they're all the best. So I couldn't choose one for first, second, and third. Or it could be that I just don't like any of the entries so I wouldn't want any of them to get my votes.

Whoever hosts the SoTW can add in any rules that he wants, so if you wish to have that rule you are free to include it. These are just the base rules that all SoTWs should have. In the past there has been a problem where the host didn't state the rules, though he expected people to follow them, but someone broke one and we didn't know what to do. Also it makes it easier for people entering SoTWs if the rules stay basically the same every week.

Galvantic or Kwinten, if you know any good stock packs or stock sites feel free to post them. I'll add in a section for it and link to the one I usually use (YotoPhoto). Someone should go through GR and find good stock packs there since I know there are many.
Naples
Good point, I never actually thought about it that way.
However now that I thought about it, there have been times where I've felt that none of the entrants deserve the points...

add that host must post their timezone so ppl dont post like 10 mins late thinking they have an hour left
Steve
Good rule, I'll add that in. Also if the host doesn't create the voting topic or post saying entries are over in the entry topic until an hour after the official entries are over, I think that that hour should be time you can use to edit your entry. smile.gif

I think you should add that.

Slyde_Whoosh
Can you vote for yourself, also... If you're in the competition can you vote for some1 elses? Or is it required to vote if you're in? I dunno pfft.gif
TeKno
No, you are not allowed to vote for yourself, otherwise everyone would vote for their own piece, wouldn't they?

It isn't required to vote if you're in it either, it's just more convenient for the host to have opinions from the artists themselves.
Steve
"Your Sal's username or an abbreviation of it must be on your signature." Should this rule be removed from the standard SoTW rules? It looks like some people don't like putting their names in their signatures, so perhaps it should be removed for their sake?

It is generally agreed on that the winner of the previous SoTW hosts the next one, right? And the host decides theme and rules and all that stuff, but other people are allowed to suggest new themes? If so, should I add that to this topic?

Also, would someone like to maintain a topic of past results? I think it could be pretty cool to be able to look back at all of the past results of SoTWs. I was thinking something like this, so that the winner's signature is visible, with second and third place being links. I'd do it, but I'm probably too inactive to be able to maintain something like this.

we should add a rule about vert sigs...

"Vertical signatures will be bound by the dimensions of 100x300 and 200x500"

is there is no reason why we shouldnt, as vertical signatures are not large pieces since they are in the same pixel range, just flipped.

plus itd end all the crying : D
Arrogance
Just make it GOTW/AOTW.

(Graphic of the week/artwork of the week)

Size really shouldn't matter?

Yeah, remove the name thing. Some people aren't as good with text as others. We shouldn't penalize them (well, we should, eh) because of that. tongue.gif

Totally support the history topic. ohmy.gif
Steve
Originally the rules on signatures were to be confined to the signature rules here at Sal's, with a lower limit of 300x100 to make sure the signatures are visible. Vertical signatures aren't allowed under the current Sal's rules, so they weren't included in the original SoTW rules.

It needs to be discussed as to if vertical signatures should be allowed or not. Personally, I'm against them, but I don't make the final call. It seems to me that all of this should be decided democratically, so the majority will win. Keep in mind that even if the default rules state that they aren't allowed, the SoTW host is allowed to change the rules to allow vertical signatures (and vice versa).

EDIT (@below): Another good point Arro. The host could choose to make Vertical signatures a requirement.
Arrogance
They should, but only if everyone is forced to make them during a particular SoTW. (This way the type of signature doesn't mar the graphical quality of your work.)
Darkeyes
Verts should be allowed. I mean, if people are better at vertical tags, then by all means, let them do one. It'll only tighten competition. As for text. I don't like having to put it on. It's one of the hardest aspects of art, and it can make or break a tag. I don't think something that has the potential be the one deciding factor in a competition should be forced upon people. Let them add text at their own discretion, when, and if they feel that they can do a good enough job.
Steve
I went back into the (unfortunately) limited past of this forum. It appears that all open topics were deleted in June of last year, so I could only get results from July of last year through present day. I was able to get SotW results back to SotW 13. But that brings the question... where the hell did the numbering system come from? They only began being numbered in the early 30's. Odd. tongue.gif
Arrogance
We can renumber the ones you have and say they're the first (recorded). tongue.gif

Really? ohmy.gif I forgot about that.

I'll go check the newspaper, then make a topic with the past results.

EDIT: The newspaper is fail. They missed one or two SotWs, and their numbering is all off. They have two SotW 34's. bleh.gif So now we have two options:
1. Renumber the oldest SotWs, so they begin with SotW -2, or
2. Renumber all of the SotWs, so they begin with SotW 1, but the next SotW will end up being #49 (so we skip 47 and 48).

Steve
Alright, I finished. The current SotW is actually SotW 49, and the next one is going to be SotW 50. Half way to 100. ice.gif

EDIT: Scratch that. I screwed up and missed two, so actually the current one is SotW 51. The next one will be 52.

EDIT 2: I made a few changes to the rules:
- Added (WxH) to the dimensions to remove any unclarity, though it was perfectly clear in the first place.
- I rewrote the rule "If you use a render or a stock, it must be clearly visible in the final piece." to "If there is a required theme or stock, it must be clearly visible on the final piece." I think that's what the rule meant in the first place.
- I added "legibility is up to the host's discretion" to the username rule. Unless we can come to a conclusion on if the username needs to be legible or not. Or the rule could be removed altogether. Thoughts?
Arrogance
Keep the text rule. It's bothersome, but if you don't force it, people won't get better. pfft.gif

Same with everything. You need good color/contrast/effects/etc. Not having them is... blah. I don't know what I'm trying to say. slanty.gif

OMG DOUBLE POST BAN angry.gif angry.gif angry.gif angry.gif

You are trying to say that text is part of the scene aswell you need skills to put the text on the right place with the right font.
You won't improve if you don't try at text which sotw is great for.

New SoTW rules:

Seeing as the growth in popularity I reckon these rules make sense.

1) Only one post allowed in the entry and voting topics with the host exempt from this (If you want to comment on a sig use Rate my Work)

2) All entries posted in the form (Code tags around images and your name clearly stated):

Your name here:
CODE
[img]Your entry here[/img]

3) Hosts stop updating original posts with entries so far, collect entries at the end to remove confusion if people change their entry

4) If you want to change your entry edit the post and GET RID OF the one you dont want anymore, if rule 3 is obeyed dont worry about the host missing it.
Toad
Fully support your idea Celt.

Make things much easier.
Steve
How about this for the entire SotW rules?

Signature of the Week Rules
Unless the host specifically states that different rules apply, these are the rules for all SotW competitions.

Entries
The SotW host will state the theme and due date for entries. Entries will be accepted until that date, or when the entry topic is created, whichever is second.

You may make a total of ONE post in the entry topic. Your entry will be placed in this post. To change your entry, you will edit your original post and replace your original entry with the updated version. All discussion of the SotW will occur in the General Battle/SotW Rules thread.

The rules for entries are as follows:
- The size must be between 300x100 and 500x200 pixels (WxH).
- The signature must be made less than a week before the entry topic was made.
- You may not use any tutorials, PSDs, or any other outside help to make your entry.
- If there is a required theme or stock, it must be clearly visible on the final piece. This is up to the discretion of the host.

Voting
A topic will be created by the host in which all signatures are listed and anyone may vote. These are the rules for voting:
- You must vote for THREE entries. If you vote for one or two, your votes will be ignored.

Results
Following voting, the host will create a topic with results. This will include at least the names, signatures, and points for the top three places. If the host wishes, s/he may include results for more entrants.

The winner will host the following week's SotW, unless s/he hosted the previous week OR is unable to host. If the winner does not host, then whoever got second place will host. In the event of a tie, whoever has gone longer without hosting a SotW will host.
Celtic
Sounds good wub.gif

Also 1 more, you enter you vote (bar a legitimate reason). Poor voter turnout isn't just a problem in politics it appears
Naples
I don't agree that you should be forced to vote for three entries if you don't believe that there are 3 entries that deserve the points
Toad
It might make things easier for the host if when people post their entries, as well as posting the image as they usually would, they have to post their name and signature link in a code box. e.g.

I don't agree that you should be forced to vote for three entries if you don't believe that there are 3 entries that deserve the points

You clearly aren't trying if you're unable to distinguish between different entries in terms of how good they are. There might be one entry that you think is amazing, then the rest are all much worse, but among those that you think are much worse, you are expected to be able to decide among those which two are the best. If you're unable to do that, then you're probably unable to vote properly and therefore you shouldn't be voting at all.

Iniiii, while it is helpful, I don't think it should be required. Likewise Celtic, I don't think you should get any punishment for not voting. Maybe we could add in for both of those that it is requested that people do that.

I'll update the rules now, but I'll leave out the part that Naples is debating. I think we should have a discussion on it before a final rule is made. Maybe we could require that at least two votes are cast, instead of requiring all three?

EDIT: Another change to the rules that I made is allowing the host to either make a results topic OR make a post at the end of the voting topic. Quite frankly it doesn't matter which happens, as long as the results are posted, and everyone knows that they are (so the host should change the voting topic's title or description to include that results are up).
