Full Version: My Power Supply Burned Out

Well the other day I found an old "Monorail" (that was the brand) computer in my basement. So I cracked it open and found some weird AMD processor that I didn't recognize and a 900 MB HDD that was made before I was born (lol) deformed.gif . So I connected it to a wall outlet and tried turning it on, but it wouldn't turn on or turn on for only a few secs and then turn off again. After like 10 tries (I know I'm stupid rolleyes.gif ) the PSU finally gave up and blew out and a wift of black smoke and bad odor came out and I had to run and open the window before the smoke detector went off.
Just sharing something random, after all this is Tech Discussion... rolleyes2.gif

Well, child, there is basically nothing you really can do anymore--if you can still find an AT power supply, that might work, but it's basically a lost cause. The power supply was too dusty--by turning it on, you started to burn the dust incredibly fast causing that puff of black smoke. Trust me--there's nothing to really do with it. If you're really a computer person, you could salvage some of it (heck--the floppy, some cables, maybe the hard drive). Anyways--if it's not on regularly, most computers will build up a dangerous amount of dust.

Why are you being mean to him? He's just telling a story about an old PC he found. closedeyes.gif Why don't you tell him about Teir 1 power supplies instead?

Huh? What's that suposed to mean, [b][i]grown-up[b][i]? closedeyes.gif

I said it in my following post. Basically, that's an old computer and you saying it's older then you doesn't help your case. Anyways--doing the math (and relying on information you gave), you're under 13--meaning you're too young for this forum.

Please--read all of COPPA. And to any mods that see this posting... please read COPPA as well. I'd hate to really say this--but your registering forum rules states an illegal paragraph.

Bob-sama, there is no need to act how you are acting. Not everyone is a "self-proclaimed PC hardware guru", he just found something he deemed to be interesting and posted it.

As for COPPA, it does not apply to this forum - because this isn't a commercial forum.

I still consider myself a child and i'm 16 smile.gif

Anyhow, that was very unlucky indeed. Its pretty cool when you find old stuff and try to run it 10 years later. Maybe you can get it fixed and see what it looked like and what files you had?

Oh sorry, Post 7 was supposed to go before Post 6 but you beat me to it. I see how you did the math now, but to be truthful, I am over 13. cool.gif Anyways, there are plenty of underage members and they openly announce their age. But as long as they don't act too childishly, everyone's cool with it.

EDIT: Actually--screw it. If anyone has a real problem with how I'm acting, PM me or warn me. It's up to you.

No no one has a problem, but what did you say before you editted it. box.gif

I was going to state the going rate for a drive of the approximate size of 900MB back in 1994 (the year you would have to be born in at latest to be 13 at this time). Trust me--most computers in 1994 with a 900MB drive would have been out of the budget of nearly everyone--especially since computers were not widespread, nor were they affordable in the first place. A computer with a 500MB hard drive in 1994 would have cost $4000.

Are you sure you're sure on this? I'm sure my dad didn't spend that much on it. My dad could've gotten it when average HDD sizes were for example 5 GB so the computer could very well have been dirt cheap. beret.gif

I'm still looking for the comment where he actually asks for help on fixing this comptuer. He was just telling a story. "After all, this is the Tech Discussion." He was not asking for assistance. Keep your snobbish comments to yourself.

Edit: Bob, i have already pmed you in the past and your attitude has not improved. There is no reason for me to PM you with knowing the result will be the same.

If your dad did buy it around the 1994-1998 era, then it would have been quite expensive, as Bob stated. I still remember the days when just 300mb drive would cost around a $1000 dollars or so. Today, you can buy a 1tb drive for 300-600? Quite the improvement over the years that have gone by.
Stobbo
His Dad could of bought it second hand after the prices went down, or bought it as part of a second hand computer.

My posts in this thread cleared. Sorry I didn't do this sooner--I wasn't having that great of a day on September 29th and I thought the damage was done. Sorry again.
