Firstly, i have installed ubuntu fiesty edition (desktop) on my partition.

I didn't like the look of it, despite what you meant so i decided to install beryl manager (because my friend said it was amazing) i wasn't able to use it at first, but after tweaking drivers, different log files i got it working with my graphics card. Its all running smooth then when i restarted, i got a lot of graphical errors.

I wasn't keen on my beryl as it is, but it came apparent that linux allows you to change its shell/desktop. Because im a complete 'noob' when it comes to linux i have no idea how i can safely do this? im currently installing kubuntu desktop via the unix like interface but im still confused. So i would like to know the following things;
how does linux store these 'desktops?'
is linux ati driver friendly? (if not it doesn't matter, i was just curious)
can i delete a 'desktop' or set a 'desktop' as my default?

and finally, unix, how do i start a gui while at the 'unix' like prompt.

Sorry for the informalities, im new to linux and its filing system.

EDIT: What exactly am i changing when i change desktop? like file system... configuration...

ty codex that actually pretty much covers it, i had a feeling ati wasn't very compatible pfft.gif just wanted to clarify

It stores the desktops in the hard drive.
ATI hates Linux, it's not Linux that hates ATI.
Yes.

To start your GUI from the command prompt, try typing "startx". If that doesn't work, give "xinit" a try.

Also if you're looking to use Ubuntu, I would suggest Gusty (7.10). It's out in 10 days (but you can use the beta now).
