Ubuntu is linux, the debain base makes it fairly easy to do what you need.
If you want to get Ubuntu you can get it here;
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadyou should download Ubuntu 7.10 desktop edition.
It comes with everything you need to get yourself started. All you need to do is burn that image onto a disk. You can use something like ImgBurn for that.
Now you need to decide what you want to do with ubuntu. Do you want to keep windows running with ubuntu? If so you will need to partition your hard drive accordingly. There is a partition tool within the ubuntu disk which will let you do this. (Gnome partition editor)
Now there are several other desktops availably if you do not like the standard Gnome desktop. So far I've tried Xubuntu and Kubuntu.
Xubuntu(xfce) seems to be a lighter version of gnome
Kubuntu seems to be fairly heavier, the visual effects are quite nice and the desktop feel is similar to Windows.
As for other distros of linux, try this website for information;
http://distrowatch.com/If you wish to go straight onto kubuntu (seems to be favoured even though i kinda like gnome

) try here;
