I'm paranoid so I've decided to put passwords and encrypt everything on my computer. Do you know of any other things I can do besides what I've done so far?

1. Run Syskey.exe to secure the SAM file.
2. Enable encryption on My Documents folder and other personal folders.
3. Put Passwords on all User Accounts.
4. Secure backdoor - Safe Mode Administrator Account.
5. Mutilate File Wipe the hard drive. (over writes the free space).
6. CCleaner set to NSA 7 delete. (over writes the files when deleted).
7. Anti Virus (NOD32) & Firewall (BlackICE).
8. BIOS Password.
9. Turn off File Sharing.
10. Install all Windows Updates.
11. Gpedit.msc - Delete Windows hard drive cache on shutdown.
12. IE / FireFox - Don't store browser history or passwords.

honestly... that is just crazy since the computer itself won't be able to access the information it needs.

Try this instead, use something like openBSD as a firewall, its a very secure firewall.

Compress all your files with Password Protected .Zips.

He's already encrypted them so why make a passworded zip for it? It'll just make accessing the files a lot slower.

but yeh with that much security I do think it's an overkill slanty.gif

I mean it's not like you're in a corporate network or something.

Even corporate networks don't use that sort of security they use hardware firewalls, usually a BSD or Linux variant built in forwarding only trusted services. That and an anti-virus keeps computers pretty much virus and intrusion free. Why bother slowing hardware access bleh.gif

By the way what brought this on?

The next best thing would be to unplug your PC, then bury it in cement.

I don't think I've done anything to slow down hardware access. If I have, it's definitely not noticeable. The only thing that's changed is the amount of time it takes to start and shutdown the computer. Starting requires two passwords; shutting down just takes a while since Windows has to delete pagefile.sys. Neither of them bother me.

The only negative I've thought of is that I might not be able to recover my "My Music" folder if my OS crashes, but I think I will be able to since I have the passwords. I'm going to see if I can get into my computer using Bart-PE. I know it's possible to recover files through Safe Mode (with the password).

Oh, and I learned something. If you delete encrypted files, you don't have to over-write them to completely delete them. If they are recovered, they are encrypted garbage, not the real file. smile.gif

Do you have an IDS set up? You could get one of those.

Try an ubuntu live CD variant as well with ntfs-config on it. There is a tool that forces mounting of your windows installation that somehow bypassed my password pfft.gif.

Also try buying a lock for your door, computer security also requires physical access to your computer.

Also try Nmap on your computer, and other basic security audits.

Is everyone going crazy? My friend just built a program that ddoses hes harddrive at the press of a key combination incase someone raids hes house?!?
