My father and I want to buy a new computer since our old Pentium can't really cope with the newer games.

My father states he wants atleast:
QUOTE
Minimum Specs:
Quad core (I'm satisfied with a dual)
2gig RAM
Level 2 cache (8mb) (No idea what this means)
Hard disk 320 Gig
Graphic Card: ? (No ATI)
Cooling: ?

Could someone please give advice;
* On what to buy (what parts)?
* What kind of Graphic Card would be sufficient(sp) for the newer games?
* What kind of cooling/how many coolers?
* What will the total cost be around?

I'm a real newb as far as computers go, so if Í forgot something or something isn't right please say so tongue.gif.

Budget please?

Are you building yourself, or buying it pre-built?

Anyways, I'll just give some parts out on the table.

I've never done this before so someone should review this slanty.gif

Motherboard
Processor: Quad
Memory
Graphics
Optical Drive
Hard Drive
Sound Card

I got $1010.93

Here's a prebuilt one

Cheaper, but I think it's an obsolete graphics card.
Acid
* On what to buy (what parts)?
(above post i can suggest an alternative build if you want)

* What kind of Graphic Card would be sufficient(sp) for the newer games?
8800GT 512mb Edition handles Crysis quite well, otherwise the 256mb is a cheaper version

* What kind of cooling/how many coolers?
Aircooling is sufficient, if you want to overclock try This. I think the QX6600 overclocks to around 3.2/3Ghz? stable.

* What will the total cost be around?
Well according to the above build $1010 but if you state a budget we can be more helpful smile.gif

Motherboard? Go for a cheaper one, unless you want SLI, the Intel P35 chipset is amazing. MSI's P35 Neo2-FR is working really good for me, and it's damn cheap.
Processor? Good.
Memory? Good.
Graphics? Good.
Optical Drive? Nothing really to comment on. tongue.gif
Hard Drive? Get one with 16MB cache
Sound Card? A seperate one isn't really needed, but if you want the best sound, my X-Fi is doing really, really swell.

How about I change those:

Motherboard

Didn't I suggest an X-Fi one?

Anyways, will these do?

$933.93

Well I asked my father for a budget and he said around 700 euros and he would like it pre-built.
Also, the Quad can be switched for a Dual to make it more price friendly.

I don't know if 700 euro's come anywhere near my father "demands" but aslong as it perfroms well with games like Crysis, I'll be pleased.

I don't know any European suppliers, so I'll hand that to others, but if you convert it it should reach around 650 EUR.

Here's my converter's results

933.93 USD

=

644.381 EUR

You won't be able to get that with your budget, so you will have to cut to a dual core processor.

Good choice going with dual core. IMO Core 2 Duo is better than Athlon 64 X2, but either is decent. 8800 series graphic cards are really nice, and same goes with X-Fi for sound but usually integrated should do, like Toungy said. cool.gif

I'd advice waiting a little bit longer with buying a new system. A lot of new things are coming out, which most of definitely worth taking a look at in 1-2 months. (Intel Penryn, GeForce 9 series, etc.)

Thanks everyone for your help smile.gif.
I think I'll just follow Toungy's suggestion, and wait a couple of months for the new releases.
