NVIDIA's yet-to-be released GeForce 9800 GX2 in the "flesh." We reveal some of the specs and what should be expected.

The best way to think of the GeForce 9800 GX2 card is as an 8800 GPU that has been die shrunk to 65nm and placed in an SLI configuration in a "single" card. The 9800 GX2 is very reminiscent of 7950 GX2 of days past. (And we loved the 7950 GX2 at launch, but terrible support and diminishing returns soon painted it as one of NVIDIA’s biggest failures since the 5800 series.)

The GeForce 9800 GX2 will launch in late February or early March as it now stands and will replace the 8800 Ultra (single GPU) card in NVIDIA's high-end product line up. The 9800 GX2 is said to be 30% faster than a 8800 Ultra. While it is not clear from the pictures below, we are told it will support "Quad SLI."

All of the information here comes from sources overseas that we consider trustworthy. Obviously there are some specifications that could be a bit more clear, especially on the memory bus. We would expect to see two 768MB frame buffers per GPU here, but that is not what is spelled out. We are guessing 512MB per GPU currently.

Two G92 8800 GTSes only 30% faster than an ultra? Wow, Nvidia really messed SLI up.

That's the GTS Model though

The G92 GTS outperforms the Ultra except for the memory bandwidth.

From what I've seen (simulated benchmarks... two 8800GTS G92 512 in current SLI), it'll actually perform worse based on known clock speeds. Also it'll support Quad-SLI again at a minimum, with some people suspecting up to HexSLI (using the special TriSLI bridge and three of these monsters). I'm looking forward more to the 9800GTX, as that ought to be a real increase without eyepopping power consumption.

I'm not really that impressed by this, but its good to see the 9* series is finally coming out. The 9800GTX is going to be killer, i haven't heard anything about it though . Anyway FINALLY a card thats noticably faster then the 8800GTX, took them a year

9800 GTX is probably just going to be an overclocked G92 8800 GTS. G100 is the core we're all waiting for, with (hopefully) a completely new architecture and lots of great performance improvements.

Now is the 30% increase really worth the $100 markup?

I will see the reviews before i make assumptions about this, but hopefully it won't be too bad, also the pics are the same if anyone hasnt stated, look at where you connect it into expansion slot

OMG hatred is aaalive.

Its only a $100 markup, if you wanted to buy a 8800Ultra then this would certainly be up your street. But if you find an 8800GT/S do everything you need to then maybe not
