Mario Strikers Charged Football – By: dawesbr

Mario Strikers works well at destroying the traditional image of football games, and turning it into a highly entertaining whirlwind of chaotic “football”. The story to the game is that of most football games; your struggle to win the cup! However, the story mode, named “The Road to the Striker Cup”, is just the tip of the iceberg. The real mass of ice is in the multiplayer, but that comes later.
The gameplay works very little as a normal football game does, the only resemblance being two goals, a ball, and the occasional over-done celebration. Goals scored in several ways; a normal goal has less chance of going in, but gets easier to go in depending on the number of preceding passes; a “skillshot” in which the sidekick with the ball (a non-captain player) does an individual shot, with bizarre consequences. “Shy Guy”, for instance, rides a bullet-bill (a rocket) into the keeper, stunning him to allow another team-mate to score an easy goal. The captain can also do a “megastrike”. The player has to stop a meter to decide accuracy and number of shots. The defender has to point the WiiMote at the screen and stop the balls. This can be devastating, with up to 6 balls scored at once.
Other factors to gameplay include the use of “special abilities”, activated via the d-pad. It differs with each player, from slamming a hammer down, stunning anyone beneath, to teleporting a few yards. Also featuring in this game are the items such as those in Mario Kart, like the classic banana to slip up enemies, and many different shells, as well as the special Captain Ability, which varies between captains. This could be growing huge and crushing all beneath you, or sending a player off with a red card – something I’m sure should have happened when you crush someone with a huge bomb.
The story mode is done in a simple three-cup series, with two difficulty settings, one where the opposition has progressing difficulty, and one where it is always tough. I found it difficult to manage the third cup even on easy, so hard must be, well, hard! Completing each cup will unlock new players and arenas, as well as new cheats. Each cup is played by group stages, with scoring by wins, loses, and sudden deaths that are lost, i.e. draws. There are two awards given after the group stages; brick wall and golden foot. The brick wall is given if you concede the least goals, golden foot for scoring the most. Achieving both will unlock new cheats. The top few go through to either quarterfinals, semis, or even straight into the final. But after the final, you have the, err, final final, in which you play the cup champion. Beat him to unlock a new arena and player, the cup champion, for “Domination” (multiplayer) mode. One fault of the story mode is that you cannot change captain or teammates after starting, but if you want to you could restart the whole story mode.
The domination mode is one of the main features in this game. You can play against AI or another person, or play with someone against the AI. The greatest part of domination mode is the fact that it can be taken online – one of few games on the Wii that can. You can also choose between arenas and apply cheats. The arenas each have different events, such as the lava pit, which has meteors dropping from the skies. Cheats come in three categories – power-up cheats, environment cheats, and player cheats. Environment cheats change the things you play with – the electric fence can become super-charged, or stadium events turned off. Power-up cheats are made up mostly of combinations of items, such as just shells or just mushrooms and bananas. Player cheats make you invincible when doing a megastrike and other think that affect characters in-game.
In the end this game could repel classic football gamers, but I enjoy it very greatly and I play Fifa. The graphics leave a bit to be desired, but ingenuity and an online mode make this an A-grade game.

I took the time to skim through your article. I have to say this is one of the more 'above average' applications I've seen in the long run. I couldn't find any grammatical errors while I skimmed, but I have to suggest that you 'break up the ideas into sections.'

Anyways, now to wait for a section head. sleep.gif

Thanks, I am TD, I was thinking of adding Subtitles because of the large paragraphs. However the formatting on this forum makes it a bit harder to read (no indents...).

And I notice Doddsy1992 is on...hint, hint.

EDIT:

He went offline shortly after I said that...and he was online for a bit just before I edit this, though he is off again now. dry.gif

I have to say that is one of the best applications we have seen in a while. Most applications are quite poor and are at the acceptable level. That was very good.

However, I noticed one or two gramatical errors and a few clumsy spelling mistakes. This, though, can be ironed out as you write more articles and become more practised.

All I can do now is say 'Accepted' and have you added to the team.
