Here we can discuss RAM brands and performance as well as anything related to that type of memory.

Well at the moment PC2-6400 is readily available and the prices are very affordable. I think this is a good time for RAM because you can get quality and quantity. As for brands? I'm not too bothered. Crucial, Geil, Corsair and OCZ have served me well. Its a good time for 64bit OS's and those memory hungry programs

I have 2GB. DDR2 800--it usually runs at DDR2 750-900, depending on my overclock and ratios. I'm trying to iron out a problem right now with my overclock--everytime I boot in, the processor is read by CPU-Z to run at 1.6GHz, instead of the set 3+GHz. Oh well--probably need the A16 BIOS to fix it--A15 was a bit... bad. I usually just get generic brands of RAM that's well-rated on NewEgg. If I could afford it, I'd definitely get something quite a bit better.

Could be speed step? Or another power saving feature... Check FSB + multi i guess. My Bios was a bit random with my RAM before i overclocked. It would randomly desync itself and overclock causing it not to boot properly. After adjusting the voltage and timings from the companies website i got it sorted out

I know what I'm doing, to say the least. I'm pretty sure it wasn't a clean flash last time. I have the A16 BIOS and I'll be flashing it to that. Also, Vista was reading my processor as 30.02GHz for a while. I noticed my overclock wasn't right after I installed SP1. I didn't have any time to fix it until now. A mass removal of USB devices leads me to believe that the board has some faulty power regulators. Unplugging a USB hub, USB joystick, and USB DVD burner has made snappy and smooth boot-ups. I probably should have taken a few notes looking over the WR methods. Oh well--I have it under control.

32MB of RAM? That's how much my first computer, over a decade ago, had.
Oh and by the way--I'll tease you guys for a minute. I fixed my problem and I have a new number from BIOS improvements (xxxxMHz)...
0:0:20.095 to one, or 0:32:31.087 to thirty-two.
Compared to a previous number from stock (1600MHz)...
0:0:32.781, and I didn't take a run to thirty-two.
Take a gander at what "xxxxMHz" is.

1.25GB at 166.3MHz. Darn you Dell for having outdated motherboards. I want more RAM though. Photoshop eats this stuff up because it's not very fast to begin with.

1.25GB thats an odd number. DDR is getting expensive these days it cost me a fair bit to upgrade on old computer. Although i never really had much trouble running photoshop on 1GB of Ram under xp?

I saw no use in taking out the 256MB stick since it's not really hurting anything. I do a bunch of things at a time on Photoshop. If I didn't have such a small attention span, then I would probably be able to work on one thing at a time and stay focused.

I'm going to have to object to that. We have a number of PD 820s (Smithfield, 2.8GHz) with 2GB of RAM (DDR2 400 or 533--I'm not sure right now, 4x512MB) and it doesn't run that smoothly. Well, it'll do most 2D stuff and 3D classwork, but it stinks once you get into complex 3D models. On my latest model, I guesstimate a few thousand faces (only partially done with detailing the front of my model--I haven't worked on the sides or the top much, much less the rear side or other things I have to add) and it just annoys me after a few minutes, seeing it run so slow.

For what boost? Using USB flash drives is usually a pretty bad idea. My recommendation is more spend $15-20 on 1GB more RAM. At 2GB, Vista will definitely run smoothly. Even on Vista 64, it's enough for games.

I have an IBM T43 with horrible specs (see below) and I upgraded from 512mb to 1GB of RAM.
About the specs:
Everybody in 6th grade at my school has to get a laptop. They have a license with Lenovo to get laptops and they can be repaired at school. But the specs are horrible. My parents thought if I got a different Lenovo laptop I wouldn't get service at school which would be a problem. (But I would)

I think he means the Vista upgrade edition logo companies have been slapping on.
linkyHowever to be honest its the same RAM just with an extra certificate for some odd reason. My vista 32bit used to eat up around 1GB of memory in the background so 2GB is defiantly recommended. DDR2 is going cheap these days anyway so its feasible to buy that much RAM

To be honest that IBM T43 looks pretty good for a work laptop, with 1GB of RAM you shouldn't really be finding that much trouble with it. I mean you don't need amazing power for Microsoft word

. Just don't expect to run crysis in maths class.

Oh you mean ScamRAM? I always hate seeing hardware (beyond motherboards with IGP and graphics cards) being "Vista Certified" or some other junk like that. They slap $5 more onto the price and sell it because some bozo put in "Vista RAM Upgrade" or something. Same thing with brick-and-mortar stores, that still try to sell you DDR2 667 at $80/gig.
Anyways--Vista doesn't really need 2GB, but 2GB definitely helps. If you want it smoother (MS Office doesn't really count--though it is bloated. Why the HECK does Outlook need a few
hundred megs to install??? It's a freaking email program for God's sake!), you should be able to find a 2GB stick of DDR2 667 for your laptop for around $30-40.
