Full Version: What Do You Think Of My New Laptop?

I've been shopping around for a laptop and I think I've found a good setup for a decent price, but I'm only so knowledgeable on the subject. What do all of yall think?

Lenovo ThinkPad T61 with nVIDIA Graphics

Intel Core 2 Duo processor T8300 (2.4GHz 800MHz 3MBL2)
Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium
14.1 Wide Screen Display WXGA+ TFT
nVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M graphics card.
2 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz SODIMM Memory (1 DIMM) (Ill put another 2 GB stick in later)
UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad) with Fingerprint Reader
160GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm
DVD Recordable 8x Max Dual Layer, Ultrabay Slim
Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN (supporting Centrino Pro)
Integrated Bluetooth PAN
6 cell Li-Ion Battery

I think this would run well for what I want to do. Word processing, basic internet, some music playing and some gaming, none of the really large games that require huge amounts of data transfer and stuff. How do you think this will work?

Oh yeah, I'll be at college with it
finisterra
For what you need, it's extremely good and I'm sure you can take more juice out of it. I like the fingerprint reader for security, NVIDIA for video, everything's really good.
redmonke
How much did all of it cost?

I would have gotten a bigger hard drive and a 12 cell battery.

Is that the 256mb graphics card?

Well, I think it looks great for everything you're doing. smile.gif

Have fun with it.

How much does it cost?

Assuming that it was a reasonable price that's a very nice laptop for what your going to be using it for.

For what you plan to do with it, the harddrive space is more than enough.
gabtdw
That looks good, it's unlikely that you will run into any problems with the hard drive space for what you want to use it for, and the processor+RAM+graphics card should make it run fast =)

Lenovo batteries are horrible, that's to my experience.

Lenovo laptops in general, are horrible, to my friend who uses them day in and day out. He goes to college with one too.

Sort of interesting. I don't quite know why you're going with a "professional" graphics card, but that may not be a real option to change to a GeForce card. Effectively, it's a GeForce 8400M-GS. Still, it looks pretty good. How much are you paying for it?

Yea I'm thinking that too, Bob, Quadro graphics cards is for hard core graphics designers. laugh.gif looking at the 6 cell, I would believe that your battery would not last longer than two and a half hours...

Watch it--not just graphics designers. Engineers, architects, and other artists use professional cards too.

I have a T43 and I've had almost no problems with it.
I'm planning on buying a T61 just like that if this one gives out. happy.gif

I'd disagree there. I had a Lenovo, and wished I never got a new laptop. It was an amazing laptop, brilliant battery life, and it was really substantial. I'd definitely reccomend a Lenovo, I wished I had bought another one.

Good except for vista :\.I stick with Xp because more sowtware work with it and it doesn't have as much problems as vista

Better grammar is appreciated. Also, Vista actually has fewer security holes then XP does, and those that it does have are not exploited as often. If there's one thing hackers like, it's an OS they've had years to become familiar with. Also, Vista's "driver" woes are not really present--unless you plan on using some ancient printer and scanner, and the company who is responsible for the drivers just wants you to buy those products over again. For 32-bit and 64-bit? More old programs that work in a legacy mode in 32-bit won't work in 64-bit, but those programs are really rarely used. I've encountered a few, but I'd say don't worry about it. There is no real difference for drivers--MS won't certify Vista drivers unless they work properly with both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. For games? Most are 32-bit only and will use no more than 2GB of RAM on their own--so the max on 32-bit machines really is 3GB. For 64-bit? It's basically the same, though future 64-bit programs will be able to use more than 2GB of RAM. Already, the next Adobe Photoshop will be 64-bit--which means many digital artists especially will be able to use more of their RAM.

Um I'm too lazy to go back to the site right now to check what the exact price was, but somewhere around 1200 i think, which includes some things not mentioned before like Microsoft Office- Home and Student edition.

I got the 160GB hard disk drive as opposed to a larger one because i plan on also getting an external hard drive (500MB) for when I come home and dont want to being my laptop but want all my media and work.

about Lenovo's sucking, ive only heard good things about them and ive worked with some before and never had issues, so im ready to own one

battery- extended battery life isnt a huge deal to me, i plan on being around outlets whenever i need to charge

the graphics card was just the one included in the deal

I think you should buy it then format it because lenovo sticks so much crap on there that works against windows, using up memory and cpu time. By the way I know from experience, I own the IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad T60.

DONT GET A MAC!

Unless you have won the lottery or something, it isnt worth it. My friend got a mac air and he hated the software that came with it, and it cost him a bomb.

I guess he's the only person on the planet who doesn't understand what a MacBook Air is for.
