Full Version: Xela King's Application
Sal's RuneScape Forum > The Media Board > Newspaper > Applications > Accepted Applications
Xela
1. Why I would like to join: I would like to join because I love sals and I've been reading the newspaper. I read Merch Gwyar's report "Power In Runescape" and that spurred me on to think some more and gather ideas. With the updates at the moment being so controversial I think that there's a lot for me to write about and the newspaper is a good place to be writing!

2. Desired section: RS News

3. My experience: Well, I don't have a huge amount of experience online, but I debate at school and get good grades in english and history in which I write a lot of essays.

4. My example:

Blix was astounded, he had not really expected to ever see the surface again, but here he was, in a human body, just walking about the town.
But he wasn't really walking.
No, his liquid body was simply replacing the usual water inside this person's body, allowing him to have control over their movements by forcing their limbs about.
Still, it was better than nothing, and he felt like getting something nice to celebrate his release, so he headed to his favourite store: New York Diamonds. It was only a short walk from where he was and it would help him get used to human control, it would be a bad idea to make this guy explode by accident if he got shot robbing the store, like the rat that got squashed in the sewer.

When he got there, Blix had a shock: He had been beaten to it, there were already some people in there, robbing the store, one was melting the cases, the other holding up the cashier and another doing something else he couldn't see.

Wait a second! Melting glass with your hands? I'm not the only one like this!

Blix jumped out of the person he was in, slid under the door, and jumped into the flame person, he guessed they would be useful to follow, he just had to remember to jump out in water, the other guy had just shrunk to about a fifth of his size without any water to keep him filled up.

It's not from the right genre of writing but I hope it gives you some idea of how well I write (or not:P).

Why is it that the quest cape is not treated as equal to other capes of achievement by some players? I simply cannot understand why some people make the distinction between a cape which requires 99 in one skill and a cape which requires you to gain all of the quest points, doing tough quests like Mournings End 2 and Dream Mentor.

Considering that some capes can be "bought" with a lot of GP (around 10 million GP from level 1 will get a cooking cape), it seems stupid to claim that quest capes are easy to get when with a lot of money, a cape can be yours very fast. In fact, a quest cape requires both a lot of time and money - when doing Mournings End 2 you are constantly under attack by monsters during a long maze and the only way to avoid constant damage of 10 upwards is to use prayer and therefore prayer potions, which cost a lot of money when you are using so many of them.

Also a common complaint is that there is no XP required for a quest cape, but in reality the level requirements to complete every quest need well over 9,500,000 XP - enough for a level 90 skill.

So perhaps the cape is viewed as easy not because it is truly easy or short, but rather because it is more approachable. When you do the maths planning for a skillcape, it looks big and scary as a huge lump, whereas the quest cape is a much smaller number, just 130 quests or 250 QP, the only grinding required is in the training for the requirements as every quest is different and exciting compared to the thousands of logs to burn, urns to loot or tightropes to walk for skill capes.

So, to conclude, I feel that the quest cape should have equal respect to the other capes, as it takes just as long, just as much cash, and just as much effort to get as most of the skillcapes.

And so my application is done, with a relevant article this time tongue.gif

With that example you could join the Stories and Poems, although it's a bit short for there. slanty.gif

But, yes, you are supposed to bring an example of the certain section you're going to write in. When you are accepted, you can write for any of the sections, but be most active in yours. smile.gif

Knowing you, I'm sure that you'd make a great addition to the Newspaper and that you deserve it, so good luck, but I suggest you write something RS-ish so Neo would have a clear view of how good are you with RuneScape related stuff. Or maybe, make it a big bigger and change to Stories and Poems. biggrin.gif

Heh, length isn't a problem if I'm writing a story, I usually write a bit too much so I thought that was a readable example that was already up on sals. (RP posts make a good size for applications from what I can see)

Anyway, I'll edit in a RS article soon, but I thought I'd better post to show I was doing something to sort it out.

If your applying for RS Discussion only put an RS discussion article. It's a bit short and 99 capes are better than quest capes. It's more opinionative that it is supposed to be too. The news is supposed to be something that informs and since your not reviewing a movie or a gadget opinion really isn't neccessary, if not wanted.

Xela
Good point about the opinion, but then the newspaper isn't a news report as such, because we don't break the news, we just post commentary and research.

Hello and apologies for the delay.

You appear to have an excellent grasp of the English language, with good punctuation, grammar and spelling. I'm also impressed by the fact that you have ideas already bubbling ready to become articles.

I am happy to accept you and will PM someone from admin to let them know, forthwith.

Welcome on board.
