The Truth about the internet.
The internet. Mans new best friend, it has so many functions, messages, post, an entire library, games, dating services and it even does your shopping. The internet is used by over 2 billion users as of 2006 and is growing faster than any other invention. The internet benefits millions of people, producers use it so reduce staffing costs and sell their products quickly, consumers can easily buy products as a result of this.
Sadly, the internet seems set to destroy your computer, viruses, spyware, computer worms and Trojans. All of which cause unnecessary cost and worry.
The first of these, viruses are what everyone is worried about, data crashes, computer freezes and memory losses are all often attributed to viruses. The virus is not quite as deadly as it is made out to be, it must be downloaded or copied from a CD to contaminate the computer and network, therefore it is easy to avoid contamination. The internet is a huge carrier of viruses, most sites will have a few unless they contain a professional firewall (Google, Yahoo). Luckily, only 1% of viruses will be downloaded to a computer when using internet explorer or Firefox thanks to their firewall, however, many other dangers lurk on the internet…
One of these is the humble computer worm. It is one of the most annoying threats, targeting networks in businesses and schools. The main function of the worm is to spread, some to destroy files, others to fix faults. An example of this is the Xerox PARC worm, launched by Microsoft to fix faults on hosts systems. The worm is mainly used by spammers to threaten businesses, using stolen IP addresses to lock users out with a DOS attack. DOS attack: Denial of service, all users on the network are locked out.
However, a worm is nothing compared to a trojan; technically not a virus like worms and normal viruses, trojans carry a reputation of surprise and deceit, due to the fact hundreds can be on a system at the same time. Named after the famous wooden horse of Troy, a trojan installs programs and other viruses onto the network and system, they then activate after the set time limit which can be a few second, to years. Once activated the trojan will execute its program, deleteing files, recording data and stealing programs.
Finally, spyware. Spyware is a program which logs which sites the user has visited, what details have been entered and which passwords have been entered. Spyware is responsible for the theft of huge sums of money, identity thefts and stalking as identity is found all over a hard disk.
However, threats on the internet don’t just come from malicious programs; other users are just as dangerous.
Chatrooms are where everyone can talk. Sounds great? Teenage chatrooms are for teenagers right? No adults? Wrong. Sexual offenders are often found on chatrooms trying to meet up with children offline, pretending to be another young person. This isn’t just a threat to children, adults can suffer identity theft and end up losing thousands of pounds.
Unluckily, identity theft isn’t just restricted to internet chatrooms, false sites pretending to be other sites such as eBay, Play and Amazon. The site uses exactly the same coding as the original site, but tricks users to input there details and credit card onto the site, where it will be stored and either sold or used on other sites to order products which are then sold on.
Luckily, the internet isn’t a complete failure. There are over 8 billion pages of information registered on Google with more being added daily. As said above shopping can be done at home which can save time and most office jobs now have they capacity to work from home.
So, in conclusion, is the internet really a good thing? Well, used well and with caution, yes. As long as proper measures are used when visiting unknown sites or downloading files you should be perfectly safe. Buying a firewall or downloading a free one is a very good idea; this prevents you being harmed by browsing. Also, try to perform a virus scan about once a month, this stops any viruses taking hold of your system.
