I have never seen a jumpdrive this large or for so much.

Within 5 years, most of us will have 40GB flash drives like it's nothing. $4k for a 64GB one is humorous. You can get two 32GB flash drives for under $280. What is the manufacturer, and even more so the retailer thinking? laugh.gif

The size really isn't overkill. It all depends on what the user intends to do with it. The price, however is. From what Agent said, I looked up some 32GB ones. I couldn't find one that sold for over $170.

It's the future I guess. When I got my first 128mb memory stick, I never thought I would use more than 10mb. Now I am using a 1gb memory stick and have 160mb in school work just from the past 12 months.

I might buy a few 4gb or 8gb ones for backing files up, they are great and are so small they can sit in my safe quite easily. I have like 5 of them locked in my safe. tongue.gif

Paying that much for a stick is really crazy...
I would wait till it costs a lot less...

Or documents

I got a 256MB one a long time ago for $50 for school. I thought I would never use a lot of space of it back then because all I did in school was Word Docs.

Now I'm making movies, making full web sites from bottom to the top, Playing with Photoshop and doing a lot with Flash all in school for my classes and there just basic courses. In the past year I made over 2 GB of data.

Just my PS files take up a gig! Your right about the price though. Thats what really surprised me. I mean, what person would buy a flash drive for that much when they could get two smaller ones for the fraction of the price. My guess is that they have sold less than 5.

Of course it is. A 4GB Flash Drive could fit a barebones Windows XP installation, minus Service Packs.

nLite WinXP and you can get it much smaller--you could fit it even on a 512MB stick. The problem with installing Windows on a flash drive is it tends to quickly destroy itself. Most of the memory used in flash drives are rated for about 1,000,000 read/write cycles. Windows tends to quickly go through this, meaning that you have to often scan and have relocated bad sectors as time goes on. I've not seen a memory stick that has a controller that will avoid writing to worn-down sectors, though I have seen (and own) a solid-state drive that does just that. It's only a 4GB drive, but it's enough for WinXP and has an expected life span of 2-3 years of normal (daily) usage.

And no, SSDs are generally a bad idea in data centers and other high-use areas. I've heard first-hand that they burn out after only a few months on digital video loads. So bad that they have basically replaced their SSDs, while low-access, with more reliable HDDs.

Hah, too true. I bought my 128MB one, it was top-of-the-line back then, for 64,90€. A few months ago I bought a 4GB stick for 11,90€.

But the 128MB one still works. biggrin.gif
