I've been going without an anti virus for way too long and I need one.

If someone could please tell me an anti virus that has all these quality's I would be very happy. A link to the site would be nice too

-It needs to be free
-I don't want it to slow down my computer like my last one
-It needs to scan for viruses, worms, spyware, adware, etc

Avg 8 free edition scans for viruses and spyware.

avg is good, so is spybot.....look at the sticky for sites...avg slows down computer though =/ as i said though, look at sticky

I mean like, could I download Avast 4.8 Home edition and Spybot Search & Destroy 1.5.2 and it would work fine?

Yes, you do want AVG.

Chaoser has no idea what he's talking about. Spybot is only a spyware scanner. If you have 512mb of ram or more, there will be no difference with the speed.

then i probably dont have that ram....everytime it opens up for, it majorly lags the computer like today, on runescape, after avg opened up, i was stuck in same place for3 minutes before being able to move...avg is still good, though it takes awhile to scan if you have alot of files on your computer like i do i do know what i am talking about, i have avg

i dunno about avast, but avg and spybot don't cause conflicts that i can see...i have both and it works fine

I have no problems with AVG, it scans very quickly and doesn't slow my PC down. It depends on the computer though.

Yes you can do that with Avast and Spybot, but the thing is that you'll have to scan at different times, taking me 5+ hours to do both.

But with AVG it scans for both at the same time.

For adware, get ad-aware. Scans in like 15 minutes.

You should turn your priority up for scanning. Spybot shouldn't take 5 hours to scan. You should also close down other applications while running a scan with an anti-virus and anti-spyware program.

If you're going to use AVG 8, make sure to disable the Link Scanner. It will definitely slow down your web surfing.
