Full Version: Are These Unneeded Files?

Well after my third or so crash I decided to check the report log and compare it to the other two I got this week. In all instances it's reported the same files as being the issue. Another thing I noticed was that it's in my temp files so I'm sure if it's that improtant it would've been somewhere else right? Here are the files:
C:\DOCUME~1\Jay-De\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER0a31.dir00\Mini072708-01.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Jay-De\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER0a31.dir00\sysdata.xml (why xml?)

Also I found this:
C:\DocumentsAndSettings\User\jagex_runescape_preferences.dat

So should these files be kept or is it alright if I delete them as the above two are causing issues and the RuneScape one seems suspicious to me?

The first two you mentioned seem suspicious... You said your PC was crashing, and that might be some malware causing some stability issues. You might wanna scan your computer for any viruses or spyware first.

The last file, that's obviously safe, since I have the same file on my computer.

OK thanks. Yea I've ran AVG, Spybot and am running AdAware now. None have brought up anything.

EDIT: Actually, some further research says that it's a feature on some PCs that happens when the mobo or RAM starts to fail. I'd get your computer checked for any bad hardware wink.gif

Google Memtest86 and run it, see if any problems are found.

EDIT2: For some people, it seems to work when you delete the file. Apparently Windows XP gets all confused and forgets about the memory dump it makes. A while later it discovers the file and then some crazy stuff happens.

Eh, I think you might have a keylogger. I don't think Rs does that. Unless it has to save stuff because the graphics are high...

I think it's usually hidden on Windows, that's why you probably can't see it.

Is where Runescape stores it HD settings, remember that with the new HD launch Jagex allowed people to pick and choose more graphical settings, this is how it loads per the settings you made. It's a harmless file, remove it and Runescape forgets the settings you made, and thus reverts back to the default.

Are crash dump related files. They are created after each crash the computer has. In your case, it creates a "Mini" dump, a small memory dump of what was loaded at the time the computer crashed, and what caused it.

Sorry, but that made me laugh so much. ROFL.

What exactly are you doing when your computer crashes? Do you have lots of programmes opened up? Is it one specific programme?
PR0 6AM3R
Usually it's just when I start my computer which makes it really annoying as I have to restart when I just started. angry.gif Anway it generally happens while RS is loading.
Fencefry
Sure you don't just have a crappy computer? I used to have an old computer that crashed when loading large things, like runescape, just because it was too old to handle it.
PR0 6AM3R
Nope it loaded it just fine before this happened. Those 2 files are the culprits and have appeared in all the crash logs I have examined. Oh and by the way I know that my computer is capable because it run Sims 2, TES IV: Oblivion (with the Construction set running at teh same time), with MSN and internet explorer open WITH NO LAG! So yes it can handle a game like RuneScape tongue.gif.
