1. Why I would like to join:
I would like to join for a new and different experience, and to give something back to the community to which I owe for giving me one of my main hobbies; digital art.
I feel working in the graphics section of the newspaper will help me improve my knowledge of the subject, as well as help me improve my writing about art, an important part of my Art GCSE (see the My experience section for more details) which will help me access the higher grades and perform well in the subject.
Plus, Cookthechef linked me to the announcement saying more Graphics writers are needed, which sparked my interest.
2. Desired section:
Graphics
3. My experience:
I've been making digital art for approximately two to three years, I'm a regular in the Digital Art section of the forums, and I feel I know quite a lot about digital art and graphics in general.
I am also taking Art for my one of my GCSE options. Part of this includes annotating your work; writing about your own pieces of work, including what you did well, what you feel you could improve on, what the piece of art is, ect.
Another part of the GCSE is also writing about several pieces of work by a particular artists such as Paul Cézanne and Van Gogh, including your opinions on the work, some background information on the artist and what is contained in the piece of art.
I have done several "Artist Studies" and many annotations (on every piece of work I have done) so I have experience in writing about, and reviewing, other people's work. All work I do in Art is placed in an A3 sketchbook, and is my coursework for the subject, so good effort is put into all my work as everything must be completed to a high standard.
4. My example:
This is taken from my Artist Study on Van Gogh.
Introduction to Van Gogh
I investigated the work of the famous artist, Vincent Willem van Gogh, and found several pieces of work that appealed and intrigued me.
Van Gogh was born on March 30th, 1853, and died, July 29th 1890 due to a mental illness which sadly lead to his suicide.
He didn't become a full time artist until 1880, and in the short time of ten years produced more than two thousand pieces of work. I chose three out of his one thousand, one hundred drawings and sketches.
Boats At Sea Review
I first looked at a piece called Boats and Sea, which Van Gogh created in 1888. The piece is an interesting and abstract sea scape, cleverly drawn using linear patterns.
In the piece, there are nine boats on a foaming ocean, all drawn with different types of linear strokes, making it an interesting piece to look at.
I think the piece's foreground and mid-ground, where the sea is rough and choppy, an effect achieved by using a wide range of linear strokes including; lines, waves, dots, loops, broad arcs and ripples, isn't very realistic, unless it is observed from a distance, but gives the piece a glorious abstract feel. However, I feel the piece's background, where the sea is flat, calm and reflecting is realistic, as the boats are drawn well to scale and the reflection in the sea really brings the picture to life.
The piece inspires me to include a large variety of linear strokes in my own work, and to observe the scale of objects carefully, depending on how far away they are from the viewpoint.
I really enjoyed observing and reviewing this piece, as it manages to be realistic, yet abstract and unnatural at the same time, a marvellous feat by any standard.

Thank you for reading my application.
