Try some gradients on that path along with dropping shadow. It's not bad, just make the curves smoother.

If you right click on the layer and press blending options a neat little menu comes up with effects like- gradient overlay and frop shadow.

Are those effects for Gimp?

Yes. It's pretty basic features for Photo editing programs.

Should I fix anything besides the path?

Add a lightsource.
