Guess who's getting a quad-core? Yep--I'm getting a quad-core! laugh.gif Anyways--I just set it up with a friend of mine, so I should have a nice quad-core by the start of October. A Q6600--G0 revision. Already lapped and all--and is good for at least 3.6GHz. Total price is about 100 Euros, or $145 USD shipped from Europe. I'm looking forward to having a Quad of my own. cool.gif

EDIT: This is on hold for a little while: I need to make sure I'm not committing academic suicide by buying a Q6600.
redmonke255
I'm sorry if I'm stupid about this kinda stuff, but are you going to OC it and to how much (possibly)?
Mikey
Waaaait! Get a hexa-core! Intel came out with hexa-core server Xeons, should have desktop ones soon biggrin.gif
Bob-sama
They won't have desktop ones: they produced certain hex-core Xeons for 4P mainframes: a single hex-core can cost several thousand dollars. But a Q6600 will be fun. Anyways--of course I plan to run it overclocked, Redmonke. 3.6GHz is the target--my seller has had them running at 3.6GHz on air. I'm waiting on my Scythe Infinity on arriving, though. Once I have it again, I should be able to make short work out of 3.6GHz. I have confirmed my RAM good above 450MHz, so the real max on the Q6600 will be between FSB450 and FSB500, I assume. I am not worried about the used Q6600 having been thrashed beyond what I'll throw at it.
Stobbo
Let's hope it doesn't get lost in the post. aware.gif

Sounds good, I am happy with dual core personally, does me. laugh.gif Good luck with the overclocking. biggrin.gif Not that'll you'll need t... tongue.gif
Bob-sama
[ aware.gif ]Stobbo! SHUT IT!! I NEED TO OVERCLOCK!!!! [/ aware.gif ]

It'll be insured for its value: so nothing too bad should happen. It's going to arrive in typical post fashion, as it's only a few millimeters high.

Very nice, but why do I get the feeling your being scammed sad.gif?

Enjoy your multi-core ownage, it goes great with 64 bit Vista according to a good friend.

What do you do with your godlike computers anyways?

I'm not getting scammed. He's plenty trusted, and was selling them anyways out of Europe. He sold one of his two Q6600 G0's already and he's selling me the remaining. I made a quick deal with him--he was asking 130eur before but im paying 100eur or so it's a decent deal. Better than me buying new off a shady site. Anyways--with a Q6600, I'll still have my E2140 for backup, so I feel free to abuse both to the full extent possible through overclocking.

And quad-core ownage is going to be fun. Of course I've been a very vocal supporter of Vista64 in this forum too. tongue.gif And with my godlike computer? It's sitting <1 meter away shut down, just sitting there since I have no monitor and no keyboard... for now. I'm going to borrow a monitor for a bit when I get my keyboard, so I should have it up and running in current form. Up CPU to 2.67GHz or so and then pop it onto WCG, while also getting the FAH GPU client and popping that onto my HD3850.

Once I get $150-200 again, I'll spend it on an LCD... 19"-22". I need to do a burst of research on the Soyo that OfficeMax sells--since they're not a few blocks away so I can go there for a deal/steal.

The nerd inside me is screaming like a school girl.

Like 4 years from now, i'll be back asking you what I need to make my computer as godlike yours is as this moment.

This makes me feel so outdated. I'm using a single-core Celeron. sad.gif

What do you plan to do with your new quad once it's overclocked and everything?

Post some benchmarks once you have everything set up. I'm curious to see how it performs.

Same here, I'm still using Athalon Xp 3,200+. sad.gif I don't have a lot of money thats why, plus I have to get permission from my parents to buy stuff for the computer. they are letting me buy a graphics card (FINALLY!! holiday.gif) and some more RAM. I only have $350 or so. I'm trying to save up around $2,000 and possibly $3,000. If I do, I will buy a mac mini or a MacBook or MacBook Pro 17' or 15'. With the left overs I might buy some upgrades for the computer or a PS3.

It is custom built, it is pretty much guaranteed to pwn.

Yah, Mac mini=fail.

Macbook Pro has a screen, but Mac Pros don't come with a monitor standard.

Macbook Pros are very good, and they has upgradeable Graphics Chip!

Oh yah, and AMD is fail, it also spells MAD, exactly what it makes its users tongue.gif. Intel FTW.

Yeah, I will buy a CPU a lot later in my life, or just get a new computer, because eMachines? I bet you are like wtf is that. If I would plan to buy a new CPU I might as well buy a new motherboard from Nvidia and then I could sell the graphics card that I would have then for a better one and buy a very awesome gaming card thats PCI instead of AGP and I would get myself a Intel Extreme CPU. Then I would have a awesome computer. aI wish I could custom build one but that is too expensive and I am too young to get a job. sleep.gif

Custom building is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay cheaper.

My friend just built himself a computer that can run maxed out settings on Crysis, and guess what. It looks perfect, and it runs quite fast.

Guess how much he spent, $1,300. The price of the Macbook i'm typing on.

Quad core@something like 2.8GHz, ATI x2860 (or something like that, it is the best graphics chip out there for the price, considering past that graphics chip level the prices skyrocket) and 4 gigs of high speed RAM.
The Virus
I don't have 1 Grand sad.gif. But that is cheap. I mean I have a bunch of links on a Microsoft word file but I'm not sure its all compatible and If I will need to add a bunch of extra fans.

Here are the links.

Just the sound of all those items makes my mouth drop.

I don't know about if I should add Windows Xp Professional or Windows Vista Ultimate or Windows Vista Home Premium. I have a couple games thatcan only run on Windows Xp so....

Hmm I noticed I forgot a CD/DVD drive. sleep.gif This one should do.

nVidia doesn't have very stable boards right now. You'd be better off with an ASUS board.

A Q6600 will be a step up from my E2140. I have a few benchmarks for the system. The advantages of Kentsfield over Allendale-1M?
1) 2 additional cores
2) Much more L2 cache: 1MB L2 for 2 cores versus 4MB for 2 cores times two.
3) What FSB limit? I can go much higher with a Q6600 than I can with an E2140
4) Virtualization: I'm looking forward a bit to this. Having hardware support means that when I use it, it'll all be faster.

Anyways: my uses for it?
1) World Community Grid on the Q6600
2) Folding@Home GPU client on the HD3850 & supported by a single thread on the Q6600
3) Gaming and general use

I came from a Celeron "4" (Northwood) 2GHz a year ago. It's a huge boost in performance, just having the E2140. Over six times faster in single-threaded applications. So trust me: I felt you pain for quite a while. Now that I'm out in college, theres a few things that have happened really. One is I'm poor. The next is I can be a computer enthusiast, and when I have money I can spend it as I see fit. So now, I already have my E2140 + HD3850 desktop, replacing the E2140 with a Q6600, and I have my UMPC which is awesome, and I'm using for a main right now.

Anyways, I've been interested in a few other computers. I saw a few nice retail setups for the prices, an I'm not afraid of refurb since I'll tear it apart as it is, to swap around components so I can absorb what I want. I was looking at a few desktops before with Q6600s in 'em. One had an 8600GT which would be fine as a temporary card, and there was also some that had 2x320GB hard drives that I'd tear out for extra storage. BSEL mod my E2140 to FSB333 (from FSB200) and swap for the Q6600. I've not done that yet, but I may sell my E2140 to my friend for about $50 so he has a processor for a new computer he's building with my assistance.

Other than that all, I need a monitor more than I need a Q6600.

@ About that build, it's really not good. There's equally faster for much less.

What do you mean by that. I heard they make very good motherboards.
Bob-sama
Not for Intel. Their chipsets are crap really. Skulltrail's infected with them. Even if they become stable, they still draw too much electricity and put out a lot of heat. And nVidia doesn't make motherboards. Foxconn produces most of the boards last I checked, and distributes them to XFX and EVGA, both of which distribute references motherboards.

Other than that, 8800GTS's are not a great choice. Newer & better are out.
The Virus
So Asus is better. I am just looking for something similar to that Nvidia one. Not that I am planning to build a custom computer in around the next 5 or so years. Yup thats right. About 5 years until I will have a lot of money. sad.gif
Bob-sama
Not if the Asus uses an nVidia chipset. Look at Intel chipsets and at CrossFire instead of SLI. And you don't need thousands of dollars. $800 will get you a fine computer.
The Virus
Yeah I know, but I am dreaming of a maxed out computer, so maxed out that it will almost get the cpu on fire!
Bob-sama
Rules of thumb:

1) Once you know, you Newegg
2) Never Extreme Edition processors. Never.
3) If you want to max stuff out, look at servers & workstations over desktops
4) Don't cheap too much on power supplies
5) Eventually, you'll get one or more component DOA. Be it now or later--it'll happen

Anyways--$800 can get you a decent computer able to play all the latest games decently. Of course my upgrade on the way is a quad-core processor: something that was >$200 out of price range a year ago. I didn't need the extra cores as all I was doing was gaming, though now it's $150 total and I have the money, so I'm willing to spend it. You don't need to. I'm still furiously tempted to buy an E7200 and overclock it: but I won't since a quad-core costs about the same now and will be able to process much more.

Then don't cool your CPU. tongue.gif

Bob or Acid could help you get a pretty good PC for $800, but it'll never be maxed out.
And it's best not to buy what will max everything out these days. It'll be outdated in a couple of years anyways, so buy a little cheaper, and upgrade when you need to.
The Virus
Ok I will notify you in 5 years or so when I have the money. I'll probably have more than $800 in 5 years so there will be much better technology. It might take me around 2 years to get to 800. So far I got $350.

Congrats bob, the q6600 g0 stepping really screams as it is at 2.4 ghz, post up some benchmarks not overclocked and overclocked please? tongue.gif

My computer's 3-4 years old haha... xD I killed the ATI graphics card and am using the on-board motherboard one at the moment. ;x

Probably custom build a new one anyhows sooner or later... By the end of year hopefully lol... Scab parts off one of a site which sells custom-build computers and shop locally for the parts... Then get my uncle to slap them together. biggrin.gif

Hopefully it'll go alright haha... Will make sure I post here before I actually do go out and buy stuff though. tongue.gif

Make sure you have fun with it... But don't melt it at the same time. ohmy.gif
Bob-sama
Thanks for the good wishes all: I've not sent out the money order yet since I've not got to the WU place. It'll be soon: I forgot last time I was at the store but that's alright. It'll get sent out for overnight delivery, then my friend can send it out.
Caboose
I'm currently using the Intel Pentium E2140 Dual Core that came with my PC, it's pretty good running at it's max so I figured I wouldn't need to upgrade it any time soon...
Bob-sama
Of course, I'm running my E2140 at a >100% overclock. A Q6600 with a 50-60% overclock will be a lot faster though.
Caboose
Just as a matter of interest, how would you go about overclocking?
Bob-sama
Raise FSB, adjust voltages, adjust RAM timings, and hope it's stable. tongue.gif
