The world of RuneScape was created by the three gods Saradomin, Zamorak and Guthix at the start of the First Age. Theologians and priests state that for much of this time the gods were still in the process of forming the world. Much of this time must have been spent making the various lands, seas, plants and animals. The First Age is said to have lasted four thousand years. Scholars have deduced that this was roughly two thousand years long; it is thought that during this time many of the intelligent mortal races of RuneScape began to first form civilisations. Not all of the races that rose at this time have survived into the modern ages, so we know very little of them. At this time the gods interacted much more directly with the mortals than they do in current times. This was all to end in the Third Age. The Third Age was about four thousand years long and also known as the time of the God Wars. Stories tell of great and powerful entities and agents of the gods fighting cataclysmic wars during which time humanity could only just cling to survival. The end of the Third Age was said to be denoted by an agreement made by the great gods Saradomin, Guthix and Zamorak not to fight their wars on this fragile land for fear they would totally destroy it. They agreed to hold influence on RuneScape only through their worshippers and servants among the lesser races. The Fourth Age, sometimes known as the Age of Mortals, lasted for roughly two thousand years. With the God Wars over, the mortal races were at last able to multiply and prosper. There were many races competing to make their mark in the world, though. Humans, dwarves, goblins, ogres, gnomes and many more all competed for land and resources. There was much fighting between the different races, so cultural and scientific advances were slow.
To make things even harder there were tales of strange undead necromancers who arose from time to time, summoning armies of undead skeletons and zombies which swept across the land destroying all in their path.
During the early parts of the Fourth Age most of the humans lived in nomadic tribes, battling to stay alive against each other and against the tribes of other races. Over time they started to make more permanent settlements throughout the world, but they continued to have to war with their neighbours.
Many legends, tales and poems exist from this time and tell of the exploits of many heroes such as Robert the Strong and Arrav of Avarrocka.
No race had supremacy in these wars for many centuries until human mages on the north-west continent stumbled across ancient runic magics!
The human mages learnt how to create powerful magical stones known as runestones. They began to create them in large numbers. How they made the runestones was kept a closely guarded secret between just a few of the mages so as not to let the information fall into enemy hands.
These stones meant that many people - not just accomplished mages - could use powerful magic. Virtually anybody with even a small amount of magical ability was able to do something with the runestones and so the humans started to become dominant throughout the world. These events mark the start of the Fifth Age - the Age of Humans. The human settlements became big cities. They expanded their territories and the human tribes combined to form larger kingdoms. The kingdoms of Misthalin and Asgarnia quickly grew to become the kingdoms of RuneScape they still are today. The mages who discovered rune magic set up a great tower of wizardry in southern Misthalin.
Soon these runestones were spread to neighbouring human tribes and the Kingdom of Kandarin came into existence. Smaller human strongholds were also set up in places such as Al Kharid, Karamja and Entrana.
For a period things were looking very good for the human kingdoms. Some people tried to stand in the way of their expansion, most notably a wave of invading barbarians who objected to the use of runestones and rampaged through northern Kandarin and Asgarnia, but the runestones were powerful enough that the kingdoms could deal with all that came their way.
Then disaster struck! At this time, the wizards allowed followers of Zamorak among their number, which proved to be a foolish mistake. At a summit in the Wizards' Tower most of the powerful mages were gathered - but the zamorakian mages betrayed them, igniting a great fire which razed the tower to the ground. Most of the great wizards were killed, and their great library which stored the key to much of their power was also destroyed.
Still, there were plenty of runes left in the world. Enough that the existing kingdoms were able to adequately defend themselves from invaders, though they no longer wished to expend runes to expand their borders any further.
Following the burning of the tower there was a massive backlash against Zamorak's followers, who had previously been tolerated, if not exactly welcomed. In many areas the zamorakians quickly became outcasts who had to hide away from the rest of the world, though the black knights of the Kingdom of Asgarnia still held much political sway in that land.
Thus was the world in relative equilibrium for the next hundred years, the three great kingdoms held off all invaders. Most notable among these invaders was a mysterious and powerful undead necromancer whose army of skeletons and zombies launched an attack on the city of Varrock.
The year is now 169 in the Fifth Age, but the wizards are worried that the most powerful runes they had used to protect the kingdoms are running low. The enemies of Misthalin, Asgarnia and Kandarin are beginning to find footholds in their lands again within dark corners everywhere. New heroes must arise to maintain order and to stop the collapse of civilization under the forces of evil!
And thus, time went on in this fashion. Good and evil constantly trying to figure out what was on their opponents' minds. However, no major war had begun. The only battles that did occur were only small skirmishes. Otherwise Gielinor was nearly peaceful. It was not until 3,831 years from 169 FA (Fifth Age), that the Sixth Age had begun! Within the 3,831 years the Humans had prospered greatly in trade and cities such as Lumbridge and Rimmington were larger than before and had become one of the important cities. Varrock and Falador had indeed increased greatly in size, wealth, and power. The Misthalin forces had become the strongest in Gielinor, but the Kandarin trade had become the wealthiest! During the start of the Sixth Age (around 12 SA - Sixth Age) the Eastern Lands of Gielinor were unveiled, bringing with them new methods of fighting, weaponry, and trade. The first person to set foot from the Eastern Lands was Ak-Haranu, a brilliant warrior whose mission was to popularize his Eastern culture and ways of fighting. Fortunately, many people followed him and learned the Sacred Arts of the East. Ak-Haranu died before he could show his students the Eastern Lands. However, in the Sixth Age, the Misthalin cargo ships encountered a strange looking boat with vague yet beautiful designs. The ship consisted of archers holding longbows which were longer than the ones made in the West (meaning the entire part of Gielinor other than the Eastern Lands).
Also, warriors of the Eastern Lands held long and powerful swords in their hands which were not as curved as a scimitar, but not as straight as a long sword. It was called, a Katana. During 33 SA, Misthalin and Asgarnia had already been fluent traders with the Eastern Lands. The Eastern Lands had something which the entire Gielinor had craved for over the last Age - Runite Ore! Unlike the other parts of Gielinor, the Eastern Lands had large deposits of Runite Ore and Adamantite Ore all over their country. However, they didn't have all the other Ores. They made an agreement with Misthalin that they will give them their Runite Ore for Misthalin's Iron Ore, Copper Ore, and Tin Ore. And with Asgarnia that they will trade their Runite Ore for Asgarnia's Gold Ore, Coal, and Mithril Ore. Some of the people from Varrock, Falador, and Ardougne had embarked on a permanent shift in the Eastern Lands (also known as Azuma in their language). The year is now the 99th year of the Sixth Age. And so our story begins...
The Village of Etai was a very peaceful village. Last year was a good harvest of crops. The village was located on the far Western side of Azuma, near the Wilderness of the West. It mostly rained in the village throughout the year, and so rice was the ideal crop around. It was essential for the people of Etai not only because it provided their children with three meals a day, but also because it is the source of their trade. Without it, the village wouldn't even exist. Etai was a village surrounded by lush forests with dense trees and barely any undergrowth. There was greenery everywhere and it was the only village in Azuma that attracted the most foreigners. It also had something which it shared with the other villages: The Azuma Guild. The Azuma Guild was a nationwide Guild which was supposed to train foreigners and locals alike in the art of fighting and magic. The only thing that kept them away from other countries was because of its Runite Ore. Azuma was a land with Runite Weapons in great access. However, the people of Azuma were so peaceful that they only retaliated in self-defense, and that is also their fighting way.
"It has been quite sometime now that I've lived here," said one of the foreigners who had decided to live in Etai. "Follow me, I want to show you something."
"What is it this time, Darren?" Asked another foreigner who had recently shifted in Azuma.
"I can't tell you yet, Alice," said Darren. "It'll ruin your fun. You can see for yourself once you get there."
"OK, fine!" Alice gets up from the chair and follows Darren outside their house in the peaceful village of Etai. "It better be good. I don't want to waste anymore time here in this dumb village. I have better things to do back at Varrock."
"Yeah, fine," Darren said. "You can leave after I show you."
Darren and Alice kept walking through the thick forests surrounding Etai. The natural wildlife in Azuma almost never dies out. The dark clouds suddenly started covering up the sky.
"Hurry up!" Alice said in frustration. "Its going to rain soon!"
"Almost there," Darren said, without looking back. After another few minutes of walking they finally reached their destination. Darren gazes upon a long, steel bridge. The bridge was endless and stretched for miles. "Here we are! The first steel bridge of Gielinor!"
"That's it?" Alice said, her hands on her hips. "You made me follow you all the way from Etai just to look at some stupid bridge? I can't believe you! I'm leaving."
"No, no wait!" Darren grabbed Alice's arm. "Rumour has it that there is an unimaginable treasure somewhere on the other end of this bridge."
"Well, that's just a rumour," Alice said. "Now let go of my arm and let me go!" She frees her arm from Darren's grip and begins walking back towards the village.
"Fine!" Darren yells. "You go on ahead. Its getting dark anyways. I'd like to see you try walking all by yourself at night in a place you're not familiar with!" Alice stops walking and realizes that Darren was right. She looks back and makes an angry face and then quickly goes to his side.
"Alright lets go to the other end," Alice said. "Just make sure it won't take so long."
"It won't," Darren promised. And the two went on their journey across what seemed to be an endless bridge.
Darren and Alice kept on walking with Darren taking the lead and Alice right behind him holding his arm. Darren didn't seem afraid as he knew this land. However, Alice was nervous and got even more nervous by every step. Fortunately for Alice, the clouds didn't pour down any rain while they were on the bridge. The night was dark as the Moon was nearly blocked by the dense clouds.
"I see it," Darren said, setting his gaze upon their destination. "Alice, when we become rich you can go back home to mom and dad in Varrock and make them all happy!"
"Hopefully," Alice smiled, barely managing to keep it up. They traveled for another half hour until they reached land. The sky was pitch black and there wasn't any civilization for miles. Alice was completely scared and showed her fear by shivering. Darren felt her shiver.
"Alice," he calmly said. "If you feel uncomfortable with this, you can wait here while I go inside the cave and get the riches, OK?"
"Alright, but please hurry up." Alice said. Darren left her there alone shortly after.
Alice sat down on a rock and surveyed the new land. It certainly wasn't a part of Azuma, she thought. It must be the Wilderness. Alice started to grow tired of waiting so long. She got up to check on Darren but was stopped by a loud roar. The roar caused the ground to shake and the waves to rise. It sounded like three beasts roaring simultaneously. Alice was about to leave Darren behind until she spotted a scared Darren running for his life from the King Black Dragon! The dragon, with his three fierce heads was catching up on Darren. Darren was holding several riches in his hand and shouted for Alice to run! The two managed to run faster while on the bridge. The King Black Dragon rose up in the air and hovered above the two. Its red eyes were glowing in anger. Darren must've disturbed it somehow. The head in the middle spat out a wave of fire upon them. Fortunately, they managed to dodge the wave and kept running. Darren, not letting go of the riches, was slower than Alice. Eventually, Darren lost his stamina and will to run. He threw himself on the ground and was quickly burnt alive by the King Black Dragon. Darren screamed in despair and jumped into the sea. Alice, not turning back, kept running despite her brother's pleas to help him from drowning. Alice was nearly across half the bridge until it wasn't long that the King Black Dragon managed to destroy the bridge, thus, blocking her only path. She dived into the sea and kept swimming across. The dragon spat flames in the sea causing it to burn up. Alice's burnt dead body slowly made its way to the surface.
The Dragon roared in might as it gulped down both Darren and Alice. However, the King Black Dragon's hunger wasn't satisfied. It smelled for prey until one of the scent led it towards the direction of Etai. The dragon flew towards Etai, hoping to get a decent meal. The people of Etai were shocked and afraid and scattered away causing confusion. The King Black Dragon breathed fire on the small shacks of Etai and burnt down several homes and people.
"Sir," one of the Etai Village Commanders told his Chief. "There is a King Black Dragon on the loose!"
"What?" The Village Chief stood up and got ready for battle. "Call upon our strongest warriors!"
"Yes sir!" The Commander went outside and informed all the warriors (only a handful) to get ready for battle. Four of his best warriors were not found. He searched for them deep inside the burning village while at the same time avoiding the Dragon. He found two of them.
"To Arms!" The Commander yelled at them. The two warriors, a male and a female, told their teenage son to go with the other children while they get rid of the Dragon. The Commander took the child and sent him away.
"Hey!" the child screamed, kicking the commander and trying to get free. "My parents are out there! Let me go! Help my parents!" The Commander quickly loaded the teenager, along with the other kids and infants, on a large carriage driven by four Unicorns. The carriage driver quickly commanded the Unicorns to run and the carriage was gone to safety.
Then, the commander saw two of his other best Warriors running towards him with an infant boy in their arms.
"Where is the carriage?" The male Warrior, supposedly the father of the baby, yelled at the Commander.
"It left," the Commander stated, grabbing the child. "Don't worry, I'll put this child in a safe place!" The baby boy began to cry but was put to safety. The boy's parents then engaged in battle just like the other Warriors.
The King Black Dragon proved to be a tough foe and not a single of the Warriors could lay a hand on it! Their Runite Katanas proved worthless against the tough hide of the Dragon's. Also, lacking any shield to protect them from dragon breath, the Warriors were heavily outmatched. The King Black Dragon slowly put the Warriors out of their misery and ate them. The Commander saw as the baby boy's parents were burnt and the teenager's parents were brutally killed. He then tried to muster all of his strength and launched his Runite Katana into the Dragon's foot. Successfully, the Katana managed to pierce a large part of the Dragon's foot, but it wasn't enough. The Dragon easily lay the Commander aside, killing him. The Dragon roared in triumph as Etai had been completely destroyed.
"Hey!" A stranger said. "Over here!" The man wanted the Dragon's attention. The King Black Dragon glared towards a man dressed in black clothes. He was a warrior of Etai indeed. But he was no ordinary Warrior, he was one of the four Chosen Warriors. The Warrior produced a Steel Titan Summoning Pouch and summoned a large Steel Titan. The Chosen Warrior climbed on the back of the Steel Titan and the battle began!
The Steel Titan grabbed the middle head of the Dragon with its powerful hands and easily tore it off. The King Black Dragon jumped on the Titan and the two remaining heads bit it. However, the Steel skin of the Titan was powerful enough to defend it. The Chosen Warrior then summoned a Summoning Scroll and the Steel Titan started growing in power. It started glowing silver and then ran towards the Dragon, tackling it. The Titan then grabbed the Dragon from one of its heads and started absorbing the essence of the Dragon. However, just before being absorbed the Dragon retaliated and headbutted the Titan causing it to fall back. The Dragon then died out of severe loss of blood and its essence was absorbed in a Summoning Pouch. The Chosen Warrior put the Titan back in its Pouch and went over to the Chief. The Chief had the infant boy in his hands.
"The King Black Dragon is sealed in this Pouch," the Chosen Warrior said. "I want you to never open this Pouch."
"Very well then, sir," The Village Chief bowed down to the Chosen Warrior, who dispersed shortly after. The Village Chief put the infant baby boy next to the King Black Dragon's Pouch and went outside to check on his Commander. A short while later the Chief returned, having discovered that his Commander was dead, and saw something that would change his life. The infant boy had opened the Dragon's Pouch and the Dragon's essence was wandering around the child. The Chief couldn't do anything as he was completely in a state of shock. The King Black Dragon's essence then made its way in the boy's mouth and the baby had absorbed the Dragon's essence!...
