'kay, I need a phone with the ability to browse the internet for free in wifi zones, without a data plan or any of that garbage. It has to be from a CDMA provider (verizon, sprint, etc.) Suggestions?

Price range please.

Most smart phones have that option, but they can cost quite a bit more than regular phones. wink.gif

I don't really intend to buy one new, but probably nothing over $200.

I've had a good experience with the Blackberry 8120.

If he wants web browsing, I'd say to go with an 8320 or 8820. Both can be found on eBay/Craigslist. The 8820 will be cheaper, but it comes without a camera.

Also, you could just get an iPod Touch, that way you have full HTML browsing. Just an idea.

You could just buy an iPhone... It may not have MS Word and such, but there's a gazillion apps for it, and lots of other features, and free web browsing ice.gif

The web browsing isn't free...

You've obviously never taken a look at the phone bill for an iphone.

wait... doesn't an iPhone work in hotspots for free?

It does, but when you have the phone, you have to pay for the contract, which includes the "anywhere internet", which costs muchos.

Then... get an iPod Touch and a cheap phone maybe? Or is it the same for the iPod Touch?

If we take into account that he already has a phone but lacks an ipod or an mp3 player, an ipod touch would be great. ice.gif

Just remember if he gets the blackberry on Ebay or somewhere,

His SIM won't support the blackberry functions

If he gets a GSM phone on a GSM network (same with CDMA), then all he has to do is upgrade his plan and put the SIM card into the BlackBerry. 8120's, 8320's and 8820's are GSM (Rogers, AT&T, to name a few).

Anyone thinking of Nokia phones?
There is very many with WLAN.
You can connect freely with it, just like on a laptop!
Made a quick search at Nokia.com, and found many interesting ones.
Searched for WLAN an got the phones with it smile.gif

Is it a 200$ phone without a plan?

Get an iPhone. $200, right in your price range. But get it off ebay, unlock it, and put whatever SIM card you want in.

EDIT: actually not sure, you might haveto have a pay-as-you-go..

He explicitly said CDMA.

That means no sim.

D'Oh. Didn't see that. I was wondering why he said has to be from a provider...
