Full Version: Why Is Folding@home So Popular?

I hear alot of people talking about it on here from time to time so I decided to give it a shot I don't see the appeal in it.

Why do you guys use it?
redmonke
Are you talking about this?!?!

I don't think anyone uses it unless their in Freshman college Biology +...

Why would you want to make protein models?? xd.gif

I had it. There are a few projects for it, including one that has to do about curing cancer.

"Our goal: to understand protein folding, misfolding, and related diseases "

I use it on my PS3 whenever I'm not playing it. It's to help find a cure for multiple, and I think I can spare some bandwidth for a good cause. It's not like I'm using it, anyway.
Fencefry
I fold 24/7 on my pc and on my ps3 when I'm not playing games.

You do relize it's not just making models, but it sends those models to Standford Uni so that they can better understand the folding process and find cures to stuff (iirc)?

I guess I'm building on this topic (not hijacking aware.gif), but what do you do? I don't have a ps3 with me, but I have a PC. Do I download it and play around with it or what? huh.gif

Edit: I just looked it up. So basically they're creating some huge massive super computer to make a model of protein to help solve cancer and other diseases?

You download it and let it run. It uses your computer to fold molecules and send data.

I used to run it before I had to pay for my electricty on a student budget smile.gif got around 4k ppd on my 3870x2. I think bob-sama runs World Community Grid, all these distributed projects are brilliant in my opinion smile.gif.
redmonke
That's really cool actually. But what if we have an ancient computer. box.gif
Bob-sama
I run World Community Grid on my processor and Folding@Home on my HD3850. I average 5222ppd for WCG and no clue on F@H. 174k and 49k points total respectively. I'm much more dedicated to WCG--to me, the work makes more sense. I run almost exclusively the Help Conquer Cancer work units, since that's an issue I feel a strong connection to. As for F@H--I don't pay for my electricity directly, so I just don't want the power to go to waste. I run my computer 24/7 as it is--so it's quite a bit of time taken and work done.

And it's popular because people feel a connection to the issues being researched by distributed computing. If I could, I would gladly spend tens of thousands of dollars to buy computers exclusively for crunching. I know a few guys that have spent tens of thousands on such units--including my team's crunching powerhouse and forum admin, DD_TUNG, who ranks in at #4 in the world for points, #6 for work units (a bit over a million units), and runs approximately 311 systems since Sept 2006. I've seen some pictures of his crunching castle--he uses his commercial offices to host dozens of P4s (front-end machines), AX2s, C2Qs, and Xeon DP systems (in racks). The Top100 in WCG are a whos-who of the XS.WCG folk. My personal friend, Movieman, has spent tens of thousands on DP Xeon machines. Right now he crunches with a few Sossamans (Merom-based DP Xeons), 2-3 Clovertowns (Kentsfield DP Xeons), another few Harpertowns (Yorkfield DP Xeons), a single C2Q Q6600 @ 3.6GHz, and now his Core i7 EE 965 @ 3.83GHz on air. Hell--I'd love to have some of his rigs.

Well it uses as much cpu as possible at least from my experiences running my dual core to 95-100% cpu usage

I'm sure it would work.
Fencefry
You can adjust how much cpu you want it to use up. I just change mine if something lags (Which normally it doesn't.)

Incase anyone is interested, some Sals folks have a folding team, not very big, but its okay. Mainly man and I, but some others like Definition sometimes do it. I'll give you our number if needed.

EDIT: bob, I think I'll be installing the WCG one...
