My old laptop is upstairs, crammed in my jungle of a closet, torn to pieces and it refuses to turn on. The only other computer in this house is this desktop and I'm having a hard time balancing it's use with my other family members. SO to get to the point, I'm gonna look into buying a laptop for myself, I'm just not sure where to start. I do not want a mac, and it has to be within a reasonable price range. Any tips?

Budget:
Will you be moving around a lot (if not, a heavier laptop [larger screen] will probably be better):
What do you plan on using it for (if games, which types of games)
What country do you live in:

Budget: Probably around $600-$700 [or is that too cheap?]
Will you be moving around a lot: Uhm...probably not. It'll prolly just stay in my room
What do you plan on using it for: Runescape of course, I watch a lot of anime/videos, and random PC games (games like Oblivion, Diablo, Nintendo emulators)
What country do you live in: USA

These are the two I found.

One on the left has a larger hard drive, larger screen, 1gb more ram, slightly better graphics.

One on the right is $100 cheaper after mail in rebate, meaning you can make up the 1gb of ram loss (if you need it, which I doubt you will). Has a full keyboard.

Best I could get for that price range. The graphics cards aren't too good, meaning you might not be able to play newer games that well, if at all. I think Oblivion would work fine.

Sorry it took so long, Newegg is slow for me right now.

This computer has a much newer graphics card, but it's quite a bit more, plus a smaller screen. Costs $900.

Oh wow okay, those look really good. Thank you bunches for helping me out =D I'm definitely leaning towards the one on the right, and do you think that these are gonna be available for a while? I've got some extra saving to do if I decide to get it

It should be up there for quite a while. How long were you thinking?

Like a couple months at least...maybe February? I gotta start doing extra flute lessons lol

If you're playing games like Oblivion, which you mentioned, this notebook should be more suitable as it has a dedicated, and more powerful video card. smile.gif

If you dont have a tv in your room get a laptop. I have a HP dv6775us and it is fantastic however it isnt in your budget so you could probably find something cheaper. Its awesome to go on your computer and watch TV at the same time or play RS and watch tv

Good in-store deal... my uncle bought one a week ago for $650. He has been surprisingly positive about it and Vista. My only problem with the below notebook is it's a bit big and heavy.

All I can say is HP has amazing laptops when it comes to speed, accuracy, sofware compatability and running smoothness and gaming.
I would definitely look into one of those, or a Vaio.

I'm not sure laptops within the 600-700 range will be able to display Oblivion, even if so it'll probably lag terribly.

These are some, but they're made for entertainment, and they're about 500-800. If you want a gaming laptop they'll be 1100-2000.

Try researching some you like, narrow it down. Then post the computers info, like graphics card, ram, etc. And see if other members think it's good for what you need it for.

Great laptop...

Anyways--just look around. 2GHz Core 2 Duo, Intel GMA 4500M HD, 3-4GB DDR2, and Vista HP will run you $500-800 or so.

HP is way to go if your serious about those higher end games.

I've found it to be the best bang-for-buck when it comes to stability, performance etc. There's also other gaming notebooks out there, but i'd always go for a trusted brand over something else.

anything below an 8600mGT wont do Oblivion justice(though other games should do fine), try for at least that,

i'd recc. trying for a 9600m GT, like in this HP dv5t, which starts at ~600, which is a decent upgrade in GPU

there's other nice rigs that come with a Mobility 9800, but their prices go upwards of 1.5k

If your just into Oblvion-esque games once in a while, go for an 8600M GT rig (or below if you wish) with some average specs across the board, or just look at what bob-sama recommended if your not much at all wink.gif
