Perhaps instead of just hosting just one SalCast with a large filesize, maybe you could do one or more of the following:

1) Spilt up some of the .mp3 file into segments of about 10mb for people with a slow internet connection, but keep the original 'large' .mp3 file for those people who have a fast connection.

2) Make 2 'types' of SalCasts, one with the 3-5 minute wait between parts (eg: the songs in between sections), and one without. This way people with a slow internet connection can still listen to it because they could download sections. You could just name the 'smaller' file something like salcast_##-s.mp3 or salcast_##-w.mp3 (-s = no songs / -w = no wait time, just a 5 second pause or so.)

Overall I am very impressed with the SalCast, as I just listened to it for the first time last night. ice.gif

Maybe you could post a link to the podcast in iTunes if it is up there? I was going to suggest putting the SalCast there, but found that it had already been accepted. electrocute.gif

EDIT: The link here doesn't work.

EDIT2: Just post this link on the santafish.org website:

itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=284967929

^ put http:// in front. I think the forums mess up the links if you don't modify them for some reason, it puts ... in the middle sometimes.

In iTunes SalCast 8 is showing up above SalCast 9, is it just mine?

That is a very good suggestion, it is very easy and possible because when we record we aren't recording as a group unless of course we use skype. Editing wouldn't be a problem as far as i'm concerned, oh and also this would work very well for something like contents or and interactive index!

For slow connections, I would reccomend streaming it from either the Santafish website, or from iTunes. You can allow it to buffer, and it should run flawlessly.
Magical
Can't you just make a low bandwidth podcast as well as a normal one?

I more or less meant dial-up slow, but not just it. This way people could download it in individual sections, perhaps on different days so they aren't wasting their lives.

Less then 15% of people still use dial up, and of Runescape users, I would say that is well under 5%. It makes no sense for us to do this just for a small group of people.

May I suggest that you use a downloading program (Such as GetBot) So you can pause/resume downloads mid-way.

I'd like having it broken up into different sections to, but for a different reason.

I'd be interested in listening to the interviews section, for example, but there's no way I want to listen to someone read about Runescape... tongue.gif It'd be nice to let users select individual portions of the podcast, without having to let it all load, then randomly click until they find the right part.

Do newspapers sell single sections? Do TV shows show encores of single sections? Can you buy single chapters of books? No.

If you want to skip ahead to one spot, go ahead, but why would we purposely make it so that people only listen to one part?

Well, if people want to be able to skip around to certain parts, that should be why you purposefully make it so they can do so. pfft.gif

(And you can skip around to certain sections of newspapers. You don't have to read it starting page one, to page end. If you have the TV show on DVD, you can use scene selection. Books are the same as newspapers. Not everyone is interested in reading, watching, or hearing every part of a production. Being able to skip around is a very nice feature to include for your audience. Tbh, people are much more interested in a product if they don't have to sit through something they find boring, just for 5 or 10 minutes of what they'd enjoy.)

But what you are suggesting will just result in people such as yourself downloading one section. Why would we want that?

Yeah, they'd only listen to what they want to, saving them time, and Sal bandwidth.

Why do you view it as a bad thing, anyway? I don't understand that. Why are you insisting on forcing people to download it all at once? huh.gif

I can see where he's coming from, people can ignore parts of their hard work easily because of a feature they implemented. Though, I also don't find RS discussions very entertaining so I usually check out the Interviews first. Meaning I could see the use in making pieces available.
DaNoobPro1337
We could just add the times for individual sections at the beginning so you could skip ahead.
Magical
For the thing that Lilshu suggested - why not just put in the show notes where different bits start? Sort of like the above poster, but I think more people wouldn't want to listen to the thing telling them what times things were.

The point of the thread is that a person with slow internet doesn't need to wait for the whole show to load, not about knowing when parts start.
Skeleton
You make a good point, lilshu, about only wanting to listen to certain parts. Can't you do that with PVR's and DVR's too now?

I don't understand it ethier..

Yeah, RS discussion aren't always the best thing to listen to.
