Frequently Asked Questions

1. Profile Changes
How do I change the text under my avatar?
You can only change your member title if you are an Admin, Moderator, or Distinguished Member. If you are not in any of those groups, then you can not manually change your member title. However, your member title will change at certain post counts. You can click on your pip to see when your member title changes.

How do I change my avatar and signature?
To change your signature, go to "My Controls", then "Edit Signature" and paste in the code of your image. For avatars, go to "My Controls", "Edit Avatar Settings" and click on "Browse". Find the file of your avatar and click "Open". Then press "Update Avatar". If it still looks like your old avatar, press F5 to refresh the page.

How do I upload an image to my signature?
You need to upload it to one of the following image up-loaders:Where do I get those underbanners that say things like "Fisher for life"?
They are made by people at RuneHq, but you can get them here from this topic:
http://runescape.salmoneus.net/forums/inde...p?showtopic=703
There are also some made from people at this forum, but you would have to look around for it. You could also try requesting a custom underbanner by making a topic in the Requests & Shops section.

Why isn't my avatar changing?
If you previously had an avatar and then tried changing it by uploading a new image, this is most likely because the image is stuck in your browser's cache, which means that even though the new image has been uploaded, your browser still shows the old one. Simply press Ctrl + F5 after uploading your image (while still on the avatar page) to request the server for the newest copy. This should show the new image.
If this fails, clearing your cache (part of your private data), should also work.

When I click on "Change Personal Photo" to try and add a photo, why won't it work?
To have a personal photo, you must be promoted to the rank of Distinguished Member (DM) or higher. Sorry, but unless you are promoted, you will not be able to add your own personal photo to your profile.
2. Member Group Questions
What's a DM?
A DM, or Distinguished Member is a respected member of the forum. They are responsible for moderating the Marketplace and have several privileges, such as access to a hidden board and the ability to change their member titles.
Never ask to be a DM; that will only hurt your chances.

What does a moderator do?
Moderators are responsible for making things run smoothly in the forum. They take care of reports, warn members, close topics and answer questions occasionally. Click [here] to see the list of active moderators.

I want to be a mod! How do I become one?
Moderators are hand selected by Sals Realm of Runescape staff. Never, ever, asked to become one. It lowers your chances and it's plain ol' annoying.

What are all the member groups?
Here is a screenshot of all the member groups:

I'm a new member and my post which includes a link/email/image is not showing up. Why?
All members with less than 15 posts who make a post with one of those things in it will have their post hidden until a moderator reviews it. The reason we have this is for your safety, so no new members can come and post unsafe links or inappropriate images. It may take a couple hours for your post to be approved. If it takes longer, you may contact a member of the staff and politely request them to review your topic or post.

What can the different forum groups do/not do?
Please view [this] tutorial.

What's a Validating Member?
Validating means that the member just signed up and has to receive the validating email to become a member. Also, when a member changes their email, they are put back into the Validating Member group until they can click on the link in the email to get validated.

What's a New Member?
New Member means that they have less than 30 posts.

What's a Retired/Inactive Mod?
To explain Retired/Inactive Mod, here's a quote:
QUOTE (Forum Staff - All About Us)
Retired moderators have no privilege or power on this forum. They do not have the privileges that the Distinguished members have, nor do they have moderating powers. Their title is mainly an honorary title to thank them for all the hard work they did to help this forum be a better place for everyone to hang-out.
(Quote from here)

What's a Forum Admin?
A Forum Administrator is similar to a moderator except a forum administrator has more powers, for example, they can ban members, while moderators cannot. They can also fix errors with permission masks and add or delete subforums.

What's a Site Admin?
The Site Administrator is a group for just one person, Salmoneus. tongue.gif He is the forum's root admin and the only person who can edit the site.
3. Warn Questions
How do I check my warn log?
When you make a post, look to the left to see your profile information. At the very bottom of that you'll see something like "Rating: < -7 ( 0 ) 7 >". Just click on the number in between the parentheses to view your warn log. You can only see yours and when you try to view someone elses it just shows an error. It's a pop up so your browser might block it.
Here's a picture.

Why is my warn level 1 (or -1)?
A positive warn level, like 1, 2, 3, etc, is bad. It means you have done something you shouldn't have done. A negative warn level, like -1 or -2, means you've done something exceptionally good/helpful. If you have a question about one of your warns, send a PM to the moderator who gave it to you. Check the rules for more details on the warn system.

I got warned for an unfair reason, what should I do?
PM the mod that warned you, (s)he may have a different vision of the situation. And never start a topic, it is considered spam, will be locked, and you can possibly get a warn. Make sure to check the rules too because they'll probably help clear things up for you.

How do I get my warn level reduced?
Post good posts, contribute to the site, and help others. If it's been one month since your more recent warn, you may PM a moderator and request a warn review. The rules explain more about that here.
4. Forum Layout and View
How do I change the forum's look?
In the bottom left corner of the forum there is a drop down menu, click it and select the skin you wish to change to.

Thread layouts have changed for me. It shows the first post normally, but all the others are in a list, and I have to click on them in order to view them. How do I fix this?
Click here or go to Options > Switch to: Standard to fix it.

If I don't want to view all of the forums on Sal's, how do I make it so some of them disappear?
Lets say you only want to view a few forums such as Forum and Site Talk and Everything Runescape. To do this, you simply look at the right side of the forum heading, and click on the small minus (–) icon to hide the desired Forum(s):

After clicking on the minus icon, it will be replaced with a plus icon (+) that, when clicked, will open the Forum for viewing again.
5. Other
What are the official forum worlds?
The official freeplay world is 62, and the members world is 42.

My combat is showing up incorrectly in the high scores, why is this happening and how can I fix it?
If one or more of your combat skills are not ranked in the high scores than they won't be calculated into your combat level. To fix this, raise those skills until they get into the high scores.

How do I get my RuneScape name on Sal's highscores, remove my character, and manually update my stats?
In the forum header on the left is a link for the Highscores. On the left menu is a link for Manage my highscores. Enter in your Runescape username in the field and hit the Update info button. You will have to wait up to a week for your character to be added to the highscores as this is an automatic process. You need 30 posts to be able to add yourself to the Highcores.

You can remove your character in the Manage my highscores page and clicking the Remove character button. It can take up to a week before it is removed.

You cannot automatically edit your stats on the highscores, but you can manually update your stats once each day. Go to Manage my highscores and you'll see the last time your stats were manually updated. The date doesn't show automatic updates. Next to this time is a link to "Update my stats."

How do I stop someone from sending me Personal Messages?
To stop someone from sending you PMs, go into your PM center, you will see an option next to the senders name that is entitled "[Block]":

If you click on this option it will transfer you to a window that will enable you to enter the name of the desired user to block from sending you PMs and give you the option of adding an explanation of why you are blocking them.
Patou
There has been loads of topics like those I believe smile.gif.

Anyway, you might want to correct some typing mistakes like:

A: Please refer to this tread written by Mal, Pretty Obvious andm Purchased.

Also, I believe some people from this forum made some of those underbanners as well, so not only RuneHQ is doing them I believe.

You could add:

Q: I got warned for an unfair reason, what to do?

A: Pm the mod and explain your position. Do not start a topic about that, it will give no results and the topic will be locked.

Q: How do I reduce my warn level?
A: By being helpful, following the rules and making good comments. Never ask for a warn level reduction. Mods will nto reduce your warn level if you ask for it.

I can't think of more at the moment.
JamesT
Edited and added.
Tosword
Patou, you also had a mishap of spelling you said "Mods will nto" tongue.gif . But this topic is a very good idea to the new(er) member of sals smile.gif.

Hopefully this will answer all questions to the them( new members of sals) so they don't keep asking soo many questions xd.gif . They will just look into the guide and say "Ohhh so that's how I upload the avyy that I wanted" or "Oh ok so that answers my question about sigs smile.gif" or many other things. Anyways....

I would help support this.. but I can't edit posts xd.gif . Good idea. ice.gif
Meen
Zombie Kid wrote a (bigger) version of this; it was never added.
I got some anyway:

How do I change the forum's look?
At the bottom right hand corner of any page, there should be a drop down menu with different skins. Experiment and find te one you like.

How do I become a DM?
Be friendly around the forum, be active and sumbit content to the site when you can. Also, report any forum abuse you see and don't be bad yourself!
Zachary

If that mod doesnt agree with you and you still feel strongly you could contact another mod or an admin... A mod said that to me once, I dont remember who. I was arguing that my warn was unfair tongue.gif

Here is another Q/A to add:
QUOTE

A positive warn level, like 1, 2, 3, etc, is bad. It means you have done something you shouldnt have done. A negative warn level, like -1 or -2, means youve done something exceptionally good/helpful
JamesT
Ok Steve, I added it.
Salmoneus
This looks really helpful and it looks like it will answer a lot of common questions people have. I'll move this to the questions board and sticky it. biggrin.gif

Yes this forum has come to fav picking. Samster's right if mine was biggger than James no one read it. then who's gonna read this one?
Jeff
When you say negative and positive warnings, do you actually mean the rating thing? If so, so that means like, if I have -7, then I am "teh ownage" and if I have 7, I've been naughty?

Jeff box.gif
JamesT
Yes, - is good + is baaaad to the bod wink.gif
Jeff
Okay, thanks. That's kind of wierd, but I'll get used to it. smile.gif

Biiiiiiiiiiig bump. This FAQ has ALOT of spelling mistakes. Like the word "computer" is spelled "commputer" in the guide.

though a small and easy to miss post, that may turn out to be true. Many newbie forumers don't even look for something like that to figure out thier questions.

dark, that simply means that you have absolutely no warn history. mine is 0, that means that I have been warned before but the mods and I talked it over and decided it wasn't a credible warn so it was taken away. Trust me, it's a good thing to have a blank there tongue.gif.

Add this:

Q:What do I do if someone is breaking the rules?
A:Simply report them using the Report Post function right under their post(on the left.)

What is the difference between a Global Mod and a Forum Mod?
On most forums a Global Mod has more powers than a Forum Mod. Forum Mods can usually only Moderate different sections of the forum but a Global can Moderate the whole forum. On this forum, the Global and Forum moderators can Mod the whole forum with equal powers. The only difference is that a Global Moderator is supposedly higher rank than a Forum Moderator. They are usually closer to being promoted to Admin aswell.

People are already used to it this way so new members will have to adapt.

Misleading links ain't allowed, so just forget about that.

ADD FLICKR!! at www.flickr.com

Also, if you get warned for minor offences such as bumpin n spam, u may Pm the Mod who warned u one month later to ask if it can be lowered. No guarantees though.

edit: OH SHIZZLE. I just realised the poster above Arcane bumped. bleh.gif There goes my recently reduced warn...
JamesT
Its okay, I'll allow it. People sometime need to add stuff or add FAQ questions.
Un0
You will allow what? Bumping?

You're what... are a Mod here?
There's nothing to stop any Mod/Admin from warning... unless you can somehow get them not to?

Still.... xd.gif Thanks. tongue.gif

Anyways lets get back on topic now. smile.gif

Maybe after "What is a DM?" have "How do I become a DM?" I know they are similar questions, but someone is going to ask it. tongue.gif

Steve
Here is what you would do:
CODE
[url=URL OF THE SITE YOU WANT]TEXT YOU WANT[/url]
So if I wanted a link to http://runescape.salmoneus.net/ that said Sal's RuneScape Realm I would use:
CODE
[url=http://runescape.salmoneus.net/]Sal's RuneScape Realm[/url]
Sal's RuneScape Realm
If it doesnt work for you can you show us the code you are using and what it comes out as for you? Then we can see the problem and fix it for you. smile.gif
