Full Version: Structure Of Combat In Mechscape

Due to Jagex confirmation firearms will be the main weapons in Mechscape, this leads to a quest:

What will the combat structure be like?

RS has a fixed rate of attack combat structure. However, this does not fit smoothly with firearms. More likely we may have a freestyle combat game. But if that is so, the system of movement will need to be changed, because using the mouse affords to low a level of agility. We may be looking at arrow keys used to move.

Discuss.

Also, stealth may be more prevalent in a firearm game than in a fantasy game. Boss fights in RS are based on running up to the enemy and bashing them. However, this does not work so well when the enemy has a machine gun.

Discuss prevalence of stealth.

Also, what do you think PvP will be like with firearms? Do you think there will be sniping?

Discuss.

Yay first post!

Well according to you firearms are to be used .. That would be great but I think it will lead to a game completaly unlike RS.

And what about the combat triangle?

Firearms over ?????
???????? over ??????
???????? over Firearms

Fill in the blanks. happy.gif

I think that less than a triangle of combat, different weapons will be used for different situations. In my experience there are 4 types of nearly omnipresent weapons in war games, and these will likely appear in MS. They are:

-Assault Rifle/Machine gun
-Sniper Rifle
-Handgun
-Grenade/RPG/Explosive

Nearly all combat situations can be resolved with use of these, and I think applying weapons correctly will be a part of mechscape. In this and other respects, I think MS will require a higher overall skill level than RS.

If it's just fire arms it's probably going to have a triangle like this.

Projectile (Bullets and such) beats Laser
Laser beats explosive shots
explosive shots beat laser.

There's also most likely going to be melee weapons which would add another level to the whole triangle idea or simply replace one corner of the triangle.
Spectre
Knives beat snipers
Snipers beat Hand guns
Hand Guns beat knives

Something like that sounds logical.

Firearms beats Stealth (ninja people, like maybe Robot Rogues)
Stealth beats Close Combat
Close Combat beats Firearms

Something like that maybe.

Think about this a little more. You are stating that I, unarmed, have a clear advantage against a guy with an assault rifle?
Chris
I doubt that weapons will effect the mech itself other than weight/speed/drain(energy)/Ect. There may be different types of armor thats more fitted against certain weapons though.

If somebody uses a lightly armored mech than it may move faster but will be effected by certain weapons differently due to it being a fast lightweight.

I believe that MS may be like Mech Warrior.

Can't they just have different weapons be suitable for different ranges? Shotgun type gun = close range, rifle = long range.

A combat triangle of sort could be worked out with the requirements to use a specific weapon, but the actual weapons themselves don't need to fit into any sort of a trianble.
Chaoss
yup, i agree cjgone

Pistols - Short Range
Shotgun - Medium Range
Rockets - Long Range
Snipers - Extra Long Range

Grenades - Medium Range
Mines - Depends smile.gif

The same view as RuneScape, but with the option of taking cover behind objects while attacking.

So it's like ranging in RuneScape, but with the possibility to augment your defence temporarily by "hiding".
Chase-
Melee (stealth?) (giant mech swords?) beat snipers
Snipers beat explosives/guns
guns beat melee

Oops I just noticed I bumped sorry lol

Melee > Firearms

Firearms > Explosives

Explosives > Melee

The Runescape equivalents would be:

Melee = Melee

Firearms = Ranged

Explosives = Magic

Atleast that's what I think.

(for those of you that don't know, '>' means beats or is bigger/better than)

Hopefully there will be aiming when you shoot, but it will probably be point, click, shoot.

My guess is it will be more like muskets and the likes, and then you have swords and magic. Should be kinda cool smile.gif

I admit you have a good point about the combat styles. I frankly don't know what Jagex will do, but I hope it's good cool.gif

Everyone here is trying to relate Mechscape to a Futuristic RuneScape. Jagex said Mechscape is a completely different game. Just because it says Scape it doesn't mean it is the same as Runescape.

Right. I'm thinking that there will be no combat triangle. Even if there was, everyone here is still ignoring something. The combat triangle doesn't work just with weapons, it's the armor and "special" effects as well. In RuneScape, melee will beat magic in a no armor duel, especially if the mage doesn't use bind spells. Range can usually beat the crap out a meleer too if the meleer isn't wearing armor.

I'm very sure it'll just be different strategies, ranges, and techniques to each weapon. For example:

Sniper Rifle: Awesome at long range, but useless once the other guy gets close.
Grenades: Great for hiding behind barriers and chucking at people, but if the enemy makes it around the barrier, all you can do is blow up yourself with the other guy.
Machine Gun: Good for close quarters combat, but very inaccurate once you get a little ways away.
Mines: Plant in a dark alley, lure people in...BOOM! But not much good for direct combat.

Those are just a few examples, there will surely be more weapons than those, and different versions of weapons will also have slightly different strategies.

+1

Light is correct, but if it was, well, then it would really sucks, we are already playing Runescape.

I want laser! wub.gif

Maybe it's because I've played WoW (guns versus bows), but I think of firearms as no different than Range weapons, like bows.
