Today we're releasing the first of a new line of Development Diaries. We'll be using these diaries to inform you of future content, give you an insight into the development process here at Jagex, and let you get to know the RuneScape developers a bit better.
These new Development Diaries will be different from the ones we used to do. They'll be more informal and personal, written by the developers themselves and keeping you informed about development milestones as they happen. The diaries will often track projects for the whole of their development, from the initial idea right up to release day. This process takes many months, so be aware that the projects today's diary is about won't be ready any time soon.
We'll be releasing these diaries regularly, and we'll be using them to track a number of different projects - so the next diary will be about a different project, but we'll get back to the subject of this diary in a few weeks. We won't be doing diaries on every project, though, so some releases will still take you by surprise!
The first Development Diary is entitled “Reviving an old quest series”. To find out which quest series we mean, check it out
here.

RuneScape Content DeveloperJohn A, if you're reading, how could you forget the great
cut-scenes from the list? (or are they just natural?)

(plus grats on not making it read like a Hype Diary or a Get The Rabble Off The Backs Of A Team That Regularly Gives The Impression Of Being Incompetent Diary

)

Looking forward to these newly-styled Dev Diaries, i'm sure they'll be an interesting read if this one is anything to go on

Didn't I write a massive quest for that series which has been completely ignored?

Aw, Why do they have to close all the quest series?
I'm also disappointed that their isn't as much information as the previous diary's.

Seemed awfully trite for a diary. I wish they let players further into this process.. I've seen allot of good ideas go down the drain.

The thing is, this actually fits the name and if it's updated every 2 or 3 weeks, will be a good Diary of Development. Previous 'Development Diaries' haven't really stuck to their name and this looks like a great change for the better.

How could there be pictures if all it consists of is the initial thought process before starting to even design the Quest?

If you've not done the Quests, you're missing out (and aren't in the best position to comment

) - the Dwarf series is truly wonderful.

Reading it now

Edit: Read. That was short, but interesting and making me want to do even more quests!

Dwarves are awesome and will be great to have more depth in the story line.

I understand that it fits the 'diary' aspect of it but I prefered the old ones when we could read about the stages of production after (or just before) the content was released. Hopefully these will be updated often and in the end all the entries add together to make what the previous diarys were.

Or they found the topic and took your ideas and are basing the quest off your idea.

(That is if Jagex has visited the RS suggestions)
But that is very unlikely.

The new development diaries are kind of short, but I'm sure if they're this short, they'll me a little more frequent.

But I love having an inside peek on what's going on!

No one's saying anything about the dragon pickaxe? I can't believe it! The red axe series is widely believed to be leading up to the dragon pickaxe, and a lot of people have been talking about it lately, so I'm real excited that they're finally picking this up again.

@ the new Red Axe quest: Fantastic. I've been waiting for the next one for years; it used to be my favorite series, my absolute favorite. I can't wait for the new one.
@ the Development Diary: Fail. I know there can't be much to expect from this particular one, since there's a blank slate, but SHEESH. There's got to be some project due in the next few months they could drop us a line about. This is nothing in the order of the Behind the Scenes whatsoever, which I already sorely miss.
Seriously, Jagex, I, for one, don't want to hear a little about a distant quest's development a couple of times every month. Along with many of others, probably the majority of 'Scapers from what I've seen, I want to see actual news about future updates that are somewhat close to release. It's so annoying not knowing anything about what the next week will bring.
Please make a better, and more thorough, type of Development Diary in the future.

That was interesting to see him think of ways to do the quest. He is right, memory wipe does rock. And when the Drunken Dwarf's cousin mentioned pink dragons, was he crazy, or referring to a magic by the Ogre Shaman? If Jagex checks out these forums, that last sentence would serve them well. Here's some other ideas:
1) Hreidmar is in control of world markets. You have to solve several puzzles to see what he has control of. Expose his corruption, such as using stolen money to pay for his spa retreat.
2) The dwarf from Perils of Ice Mountain worked for the Red Axe, and was causing the RS version of global warming on purpose. Why? Find out.
3) The Red Axe Chaos Dwarf army is aligning itself with Glouphrie and Arposandra. Actually, this has possibilities. In Forgettable Tale, you do see the Red Axe selling soldiers to gnomes who are from Arposandra.

The way I see it there will be some trouble with this new format. With the old diaries it was fairly simple: Talk about the process that lead to some new content. The compelling reason for it to be simple was the fact the new content was known. Hence all of it was in hind sight.
With this new diary we are told to get a glimpse of the actual process of development. Sure, this first diary is nice: Nothing but the series is known. The Dwarven series. But any development on content, plot twists, bad guys, good guys, items and rewards needs to stay hidden until the quest is released. That puts a strain on the diary: Two different goals, one of them to show the process, the other to keep information on the quest secret.
You expect to see art work? Forget it, until the quest is released, that is. You expect to get a little insight in how to develop a story line? Forget it... until quest is released.
In all I fear this is going to be a 'oh nice, when is the quest released' kind of diaries. Not a lot of information (if any), not a lot of pointers (if any), not a lot of a diary...

Maybe they ought to make lousy quests with focuses on awesome plot and/or awesome something else, just for the sake of Development Diary. Then we can have more interesting diaries while Jagex focuses on hiding the all the stuff we care about, rather than just most of it. Sounds like an even trade to me.
My pardons for the cynicism; it's so late I'm embarrassed to say the time here.
