A new, localised version of the Windows downloadable client is available.
The Windows downloadable client is a lightweight application designed specifically for RuneScape. It uses less memory and desktop screen space than a conventional browser, and is therefore ideal for low-end machines. The latest version includes the following enhancements:
Language Aware – will choose the correct language region based on your computer’s settings
Better compatibility with low-end machines
Features a smart new icon
You can find a link to the Windows downloadable client in the Downloads & Wallpapers section of the RuneScape website.

Does anyone here use the downloadable client? I tried it once, and found that I preferred the browser form better. Though if I had IE not Firefox I'd go with it I guess.

I do, always have

Going to download it soon and see what it is all about...though I must admit I would've prefered the functionality of "other" clients included which doesn't seem like it in the news

boo only for windows
i used that client years ago
kept crashing / white screening on me
so an update indeed was in order
it is quite good when you don't have a powerfull computer
takes less resources compared to a browser

Likewise.
I use it because:
1) I like having a direct icon on my desktop to use when I want to play the game - it's simpler and easier than navigation of the browser to start it.
2) I prefer to keep my RS seperate from my browser (makes for less confusion if I'm multi-tasking).
3) I prefer my RS screen uncluttered.
4) It uses less resources than playing the game via the browser.

is it true that you can get less viruses with client because you're not directly connected to the internet?
or no?

You got to be on the Internet to play Runescape, so no. The RS Client is an Internet explorer window without all the extensions and features displayed. A tab in Firefox is sufficient for me. I'm surprised they are working on backward compatibility. It's got to be a really old computer if it can't run Runescape as it is. Internet connections are more of an issue than the computer.

Its only use is astetics.. (however its spelt) and ive had their old client for years, this one is only different because it has chopped off two pixels from the sides and one from the top and bottom.

I tried the client a couple of months ago and I noticed it was actually slower than the internet, so I stopped using it. I doubt I'll download this version.

Yes, but:
a. SwiftSwitch is illegal, this is not.
b. It's just the game and the homepage. It's exactly like opening up your web browser and having the RuneScape homepage as your homepage.
I just used it, and it's lucky I was did. I was at Greater Demons and then my Firefox conked out, which is lucky since the client has a backup of IE.

I use it for these reasons as well, but there is another reason which they recently fixed as to why I used the client.
5) Hitting backspace to delete text and having the browser go back a page. Client never did that.

There are two more immediately obvious differences:
1) It's a smaller file. The old file is 120kb, the new one is 85.5kb.
2) The icon is a bit fancier.
p.s. - It can be spelt either "aesthetics" or "esthetics".

Same here when both of my daughters and my wife are on RS the client seems to keep us all running with little to no lag. Even on my daughter Dino of a pc.

SK isn't illegal your just not aloud to talk about it. If it was Jagex wouldn't even consider Zybez a trusted fansite.

a. SwiftSwitch is illegal, I never said SwiftKit was. SwiftKit is legal, as it doesn't contain a world switcher.
b. Zybez is crap, I'm surprised Jagex trust it. All of it's accounts are for RWt websites or RS3 websites.
