Today, we’ve released a development diary about the upcoming ‘rest’ feature. Given that we’ve already released an...accidental teaser, we thought we’d give you some more insight into the design process for this small but useful feature, which I hope you’ll all end up using.

Hiya,

Thanks for your interest! Just a quick note about agility. We definitely wont be nerfing agility. If anything agility will be more useful. But I can't go into any more detail, as the diary says, we're still tweaking with the balancing of this system.

And yes, you will be able to just sit and listen to the musicians, and have a chat. One thing I liked about the musicians idea was that those players who wanted to use them just as a game mechanic to restore their runenergy will be able to do so, but they could also be used as a place to meet and chat and add a bit of flavour to the areas they are in.

"PS: We aren't talking about the nerfing of shortcuts, but the run rate speed increase that Agility provides."

So was I smile.gif

Also, you will be able to rest anywhere, its just that near musicians the effect will be better.

Ki11a Pk3r
*You* may not need those things, but many players complain about the speed at which their runenergy restores, this project is meant to help with that.

As I have said already, you *will be able to rest anywhere*, even on PvP worlds. You may not *want* to, since you have to be stationary to rest, and you will still be vulnerable to attack. In the middle of combat, pots will still be the quickest and easiest way to restore your runenergy, but resting costs no money, nor does it take any inventory space. Whether it makes strategical sense to rest during combat I'm sure you guys will work out soon enough.

This is not meant as combat update, but rather a general update to allow all players to move around the world more speedily at no cost. Nothing more.

Ki11a Pk3r
Please carefully read the dev diary and the posts I've made before making incorrect assumptions about what the rest system is.

The system is a lot closer to what you'd like than you seem to have realised.

You *will* be able to rest anywhere, not just next to musicians.

The restore rate *will* be based on your agility.

The musicians will simply restore at a better rate than anywhere else.

Tonanti1
"I can also see it's going to be very difficult to balance it."

Indeed, because agility is a factor in all of this, and that while you are resting, you are not moving towards your destination, the calculations for this have turned out to be quite complicated.

We're still working on this now, but the aim is to make run-resting from point to point more efficient than run-walking, for resting near a musician more efficient than both of them, *and* for all of this to scale nicely with agility levels, whilst maintaining a good benefit for lower level or F2P players who have little or no agility.

It's given our balancer a lot to think about!

And yes, this will be available on F2P.

mod_chihiro

Japhoenix I disagree with you, actually.

If a musician NPC can play music that will increase nearby players runenergy restore rate, why couldn't other types of music do other things? If a player could also do this, would that not be part of a potential set of music effects?

Anyway, this is completely speculative and I should make this very clear:

Rest Musicians are NOT a precursor or teaser for a new music skill.

They simply do not exclude the possibility.

"we will be able to rest anywhere"
This is true!

"and sit on benches/furniture "
No this is not true.
The original idea was to use benches to rest on, but benches would not have worked for technical reasons. So you will be able to sit near musicians and get an even better runenergy restore rate.

mod_chihiro

But Mod Chihiro...

Will one of the buskers be named Rick Gastley?

Will the cult reference traditions of Jagex continue on with many humorous music artist references? Or will our buskers be original characters?

Roivainen
"Finally I will be able to shout ''You spoony bard'' with an actual bard to shout at."

lol.

"However:
Will there be areas that wont allow person to rest?"

As few as possible: the one notable exception is the Fist of Guthix Arena, since the run energy changes that happen in different parts of that arena are a core game mechanic and allowing resting would break the game.

There may be others, if we come across areas that cause major problems, but I hope not. If you can think of anywhere that might then let me know smile.gif

"Will damage from poison/disease cancel resting? "

You wont be able to rest when you're poisoned. If you get attacked at all while you are resting you will stop resting.

mod_chihiro

One day I will see Rick Gastley in game!

He will serve Rick Rolls and tell players "I'm never gonna give you up, let you down, run around and desert you!"

ONE DAY! *shakes fist*

~ MMH ~

Groan smile.gif

I have no intention of rickrolling our players. Well not in game anyway.

Man, I remember the Rick in question when we was just a pop star, not a weird internet meme game ... I didn't like him much then.

Back on topic,

There is a cultural reference hidden away in this update, but it is about as far from cheesy eighties pop as it is possible to be ...

mod_chihiro

No worries Chihiro, I understand that not everybody enjoys Rick (80's Popstar or internet meme) as much as I do. tongue.gif

Nice to know there is some cult references in the Rest update somewhere.

Now you've got me wondering what it is...

~ MMH ~

Thanks folks for your input, there are a couple of things you mentioned I'm going to double check, so keep your thoughts coming!

I'm afraid I have to go off and do some stuff, so I won't be posting again today, but I'll be keeping my eye on this thread, and probably post some more tomorrow.

Thanks smile.gif

mellow.gif I dont understand the need for this, but maybe the buskers will play some good music for once.

So, I'm not the only one that doesn't understand this... It actually sounds like Classic's Fatigue and the sleeping bag.

YAY!!!!!!!! I hope this is F2P too... Basically, these guys play music, and you "rest" and your run restores faster, lol...

Sounds like a sweet idea to me, I can't wait!
Plus it gives me an excuse to sit around doing nothing on Runescape tongue.gif

Half the "respones" were on the Rick Gastley question. Well picked up Onyx, or Neo. Probably Neo, it's the kind of silly thing he finds. bleh.gif

Not sure what benefit this "rest" feature will have, didn't they take it out once? blink.gif

Fatigue was only reduced by the sleeping bag and beds. Your run energy is restored automatically to 100% every 12 minutes and can restore faster with a higher agility level or eating certain foods. The problem with fatigue is that when you reached 100%, you couldn't train any skills until you went to bed or used a sleeping bad. It was not restored automatically which made it highly frustrating. Run energy does not limit what your character can do, it only limits how long it takes to reach a certain energy.

The first time it was "revealed" was by accident and was not intentional. It had no function. When it is released purposefully, it will help restore your run energy. The benefit is that you don't have to walk everywhere, you can simply run between cities and then restore your energy at the city. It might also be useful for pvp, where you can pk in varrock and constantly have lots of run energy so that your opponent doesn't get away. Regardless of your agility level, you energy always runs out so I reckon this will be a highly useful feature that will become a normal activity to do.

I was wondering when this release was going to come out. I often wondered when it would be possible for you to recharge your running energy faster.

I also really like it because when I'm listening to this cool music I can check out sal's at the same time without having to log out. yay.gif

It's the idea of the century! doubt.gif

i actually saw this when they "accidently" realeased it. if u tried to click "rest", it would say 'coming soon...'

lawl i might actually play with runescape sound on now smile.gif rolleyes.gif

@adlo i think everyone saw that

i am quite looking forward to see the rest button come alive, it would be a good way of charging your energy faster, a shame that you can't move while resting roflmao
musicians ay, interesting

I love updates a big as these. They seem small, but they introduce a whole new factor into RS. I'm really looking forward to it.

I was many of the people who spotted this.

I mentioned to Sal's CC too smile.gif

Huh?

You do know how Classic's fatigue worked, right?
Mohorak
At first I did think that this was more along the lines of RSC's fatigue, but it's different. Still, I can't see the point of it except for over-active F2Pers/low-level members. Whenever I need more energy, I just bring along a spirit terrorbird and scrolls. But I suppose it will be more convienient for everyone. However, it's not an update that will affect my experience dramatically, for better or worse.
Magical
This looks interesting. It will either be a complete failure or an incredibly useful update.
KaBob799
It sounds great, pretty much what I was expecting it to be except for the whole bard thing. Sounds like it will really help getting around by foot without needing a terrorbird. But it wont replace to usefulness of terrorbirds since it is tied to the bards.
AP Running
Well this would be such a weird way of restoring run energy.

Real life analogy:
Also this completely doesn't make sence. If you are tired in real life and you just ran as hard as you can and stuff, you don't sit down, you run a little more, but slowly. Doing that will make you feel better later, and if you were to sit, you wouldn't feel better later, and you are putting yourself at risk for cramps and sore muscles and shin splints and other stuff.

Therefore, this is completely wrong. I'm not saying this should be implanted, but it's just wrong and weird and doesn't make sence.
adrenalsky
Sounds cool.... although i wonder how it will compare to explorer's ring? I guess it could be a good thing for newer people ( didn't wanna say noobs) and i bet when it comes out the places will be friggin crowded like the holiday events are ! ! !

I'm pretty sure I'd be fried to a crisp by dragon breath too but this is a game and we work with suspension of reality mellow.gif

Question:

Can we still rest by ourselves anywhere? Or the only means of gaining FAST run energy was the bards...?

It will be interesting to see, however, it doesn't seem particularly useful to me personally. I guess I'll just have to wait and see tongue.gif

A mod posted in the forums you CAN rest anywhere, it is just that being next to a busker will increase the desired effect.

This reminds me of the time the sleeping bag was introduced biggrin.gif

I hope it is like an animation of sitting down, and you get up only when you want to.

I can see it now: People sitting around a camp fire biggrin.gif

Can't wait

This definitely sounds a little weird, but who knows? Jagex might be able to pull off this idea well. If the buskers were put in generally crowded areas people visit often, like the G.E., I might be inclined to use this rest thing.

The one thing that caught my eye was the concept art by Mod Zephyri... Zephyri is the name used by Samantha H. on DeviantART tongue.gif

Remember this one?
