Neo Avatars
A number of changes have been made today.
  • A couple of words have been removed from the censor to be slightly more consistent with the one while playing RuneScape.
  • The Minigames section has been changed back to being an area to discuss PvP since the area for discussing Non-PK Minigames was pretty much dead, so head on down to PvP: Skills, Tips 'n' Kills to check that out. Topics that were in the 'Non-PK Minigames' section have been moved to RuneScape Discussion.
  • The Distinguished Members have been given some basic moderation powers (Open / Close Topics, Move Topics, Hide / Approve Posts and Topics) in RuneScape Discussion, RuneScape Questions and RuneScape Suggestions so they can help keep those sections slightly cleaner, with topics in the correct place.
Have a good day and May the fourth be with you!

Of the top of my head, it is basically open/close, move and set visible/invisible. Editing posts and giving warns out is still in the moderators domain.

We can't see your warns let alone control them, so nothing has changed in that respect.

I can't see the point in adding more powers for the distinguished group, but there is probably a valid reason behind it so i won't question to much. As for the other changes, i really hope they have changed for the better, which i'm sure we will see soon enough! biggrin.gif

Well what's the difference between DM's and mods now? I mean a DM could always ask a mod to warn someone and it would be done, now you're just making it easier pfft.gif.

Do I see ANY mentioning of even the littlest of the word powerful there?

Yes, I know that www.dictionary.com isn't the forum's rules, but Sal's staff is always saying how DMs are just normal forum users that are distiguished for being nice and all, well you're starting to make DMs distinguished and powerful now, or so I think...

That was poor, Neo tongue.gif

Some nice and needed changes, though.

The reason Mods/Admins would even think to extend our powers is because the Marketplace isn't the most active forum. To make their jobs easier and for us to get a hang of actually modding an alive section we got these. Dms only have powers in 6/55ish (11% of) sections that are moddable to us isn't exactly making us mods is it? Far from it...

EXAMPLE: Spar wont warn someone because I asked him to. Neither Yuan, Neo or anyother mod would unless there is a reason behind it. Don't get pissy over a storm in a teacup.

There is a big difference between DM's and mods, just like it was before. We get to moderate a few more sections to help with the workload; that is all. We do not give out warns, review warns or moderate any of the other sections.

DMs do not exist because they're nice. They have a purpose because the mods are selected from that group; wouldn't it make sense to give them some on the job experience too?

I don't understand what you mean by, "and powerful now" nothing has changed other than the fact that we're helping out now, which makes a lot more sense to me than sitting there and looking pretty.

A lot of people have argued that we do not really have a purpose, now our purpose is further justified.

We are no more distinguished or powerful than we were before. All that has changed is we can help out with 'house keeping' in a few more forums. We haven't suddenly gained the ability to dishing out warns. Sure, I could suggest to a mod that someone should be warned for spam, but only to the same extent you or anyone else can.

I am glad someone can see the reality of it.

As to Stobo's comment above, I want to just second that. Us DMs do not conspire against you so the mods can dish out warns. We report offences in the same manner you forum members do. When it comes to warns, we have no influence or power.

It's nice to see the Distinguished Members have something constructive to do and the staff can better judge whether a person has the values required to be a Sal's Forum moderator.

Looks like a nice forum update thus far.

The idea of the update seems like a positive one, so it looks good to me. Changing the minigames boards sounds positive too.

Again all people can see is others getting powers lol

As an example though there are a couple of Dms who frequent the suggestions board far more than me, if they are there commenting on a suggestion that all feeplayers should get all members content without having to pay they would have to report it, same as everyone else.

Where is the harm in them having the ability to deal with it then and there? smile.gif

A couple of years ago the marketplace was fairly busy, enough so that on an average day I would go in and deal with 10 topics...now I am lucky if I see that in a week...If it continued then we might have to rethink the whole dm situation, and then have no pool of forumers to get new mods from...

The forum and its dynamics changed due to outside influences, and as such so did the role evolve.

well that is part of the job
and an important part
and a part that is somewhat neglected because of all the reports
mods always handle reports, pm's, approval needing topics and such first

doing what you say comes a bit last on the list of priorities
hence why it is very useful to give dm's these powers
they can move a topic from questions to rs discussions if it is more of a discussion...
close answered questions when the topic starter asks it...
close that umpteenth bank spell suggestion...

things a mod hardly ever has time to do

so in all it will make the forums a nicer place to be

Look, all I'm saying is that if you keep on giving DMs more and more power, although in tiny parts, often, they will soon be mods. If you give them 1 more ability now, and another one a month later, they're going to be mods in a year. Get me?

Were not getting any more powers more than 'housekeeping powers', so I don't see that happening.

And that's exactly why DMs don't get powers every month. Prior to this, all we could do is close topics in a forum that is no longer active - that has been compensated for, two years later, by letting us actually help out a little bit. I haven't seen an active report in a month, although granted I haven't checked very often. All this new rule is doing is making us more useful; abuse of this is not going to be an issue (except for Onyx - I don't trust that guy one bit tongue.gif).

Anyway, great changes, except for the a-word - if we want to parallel RuneScape's censor, shouldn't we censor d---, too? On the same train of thought as Pinky, if we uncensor one thing a month, pretty soon there'll be nothing anyone can't say.

And I know many people wouldn't consider that a bad thing, but meh. tongue.gif
