Windows 7 RC is now live. Who else is getting it? I'm backing up my stuff right now and installing.

I imagine I'll be leaving my download on all night and it won't be finished in the morning... I'm going to be installing it on my Samsung NC10, atm I'm downloading Win7 and working on a solution to partitioning.

That's not even possible... it can barely run Windows 3.1.
Mikey
I downloaded it already, going to install it on Boot Camp after school gets out so I can delete my XP partition for summer.
Veni vidi vici
I wouldn't download any demo from Microsoft, unless all of my data was backed up... And if I had my PC insured up to $5k...
I'll wait until the final verzion comes out on desktops, to avoid all the bugs...
Doesn't look a lot different from Vista...

Caboose
It's not a demo, it's a release candidate tongue.gif Really though, it's stable enough to use... on a partition. But believe me, it is a hell of a lot better than Vista. Not only is it less 'hungry', but it introduces tons of new features that make me happy smile.gif

Basically it's everything Vista should have been, and more.
Jr Josh
Finally got everything backed up and installing right after this post.
Caboose
Wow... it would take me the better half of a day to download this tongue.gif
redmonke
Hasn't it been on torrents for a while now?

For people who don't want to reinstall, here's a hack so you can upgrade without reinstalling.
xxhyb41dxx
Release candidate right here, downloaded over weekend... biggrin.gif

Jr Josh
Got it installed and such. Haven't messed with it much, but still looks good.
Kwinten
Might just dual boot this. Let's just hope the driver for my 1440x900 screen is compatible with W7 now. Last time I downloaded it, it had awful resolution because the drivers weren't compatible.

*monumentally confused* blink.gif .. Anyway... can't get the USB stick to boot so I'm using the helpful 'setup' application included (when I've got it partitioned, that it) smile.gif
Caboose
Oh wait... i completely got confused and thought you said Nokia N90...

On the way for me.
Will replace the old build and install this thingy.
Hope it runs good at 490MB ram rolleyes.gif
Because i can only assign whole RAM chips and not partly. rolleyes.gif
But Microsoft do a little mistake: this is like giving Windows 7 free away blink.gif
The RC is just like normal with just small bugs..
And people can fix the bugs by editting the system files..

Although the release candidate installation will expire on June 1, 2010.
QUOTE ("Windows 7 Release Candidate Customer Preview Program")
  • You don't need to rush to get the RC. The RC will be available at least through July 2009 and we're not limiting the number of product keys, so you have plenty of time.
  • Watch the calendar. The RC will expire on June 1, 2010. Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Windows will notify you two weeks before the bi-hourly shutdowns start. To avoid interruption, you’ll need to install a non-expired version of Windows before March 1, 2010. You’ll also need to install the programs and data that you want to use.

I plan on downloading the RC Thursday night. I'm pretty excited for W7 full release, although there isn't a direct XP to 7 upgrade package planned. Those w/o Vista will have to do backups and fresh installations when the time comes.

To follow that up, everything's working better than perfectly. Never been more happy with a computer smile.gif

Wait, isn't that an improvement rather than a nuisance?

I'll be downloading this in a while...(blah, not in Italian...)

Why not set the date back to 2009 when it starts shutting down every 2 hours? rolleyes.gif
It is still possible to set date..

It is still possible to set date..

I'd imagine Microsoft has thought of that. It might connect to the internet every so often and check the time syncs with Microsoft's time.

If so, try and get a firewall detecting outward connections, and if such a connection happens, sue Microsoft for connecting to the interwebs without your consent. INSTAWEALTH!
Caboose
But then surely you would be sued for breaching the Terms and Agreements contract that you signed when installing the RC.

Holy jesus! ohmy.gif (Pickles arent holy, are they?)
They made new Paint ohmy.gif
Why didnt they just use Paint.NET in the first place?
It is Paint.. just VERY many improvements rolleyes.gif

But still, it misses layers.. toothbrush.gif
I hope someone from Microsoft heard that eyebrows.gif
Because then someone might get work to do evil.gif

And.. why do they at all let the public test it?
They have many testers at many different factors?
There must be something they have plans about ninja.gif

Does anybody know the file size for Windows 7 32-bit? My internet has an FAP limit and I need to estimate how long it will take to download.

Make a new partition (download a GParted live CD and run it), insert your disk, boot into the disk, install on that partition.

There is no switch for it, but you make another partition.
It can be risky. closedeyes.gif

It's not really risky at all if you know a little about what you're doing. huh.gif

When making a new partition with Gparted, should I make my 30gb win7 partition unallocated or NTFS?
LCD
Installed! Here's my desktop:

Social Experiment
Anyone like it/dislike it? Because I don't wanna upgrade without getting someone's opinion.

Is it more compatible with programs then Vista? Is it visually appealing (not too important)? etc.
redmonke
I'm not really a fan of the super thick toolbar. slanty.gif

To all of those who are unaware,

Windows 7 RC1 will shut down every two hours starting March 2010. It will then cease to function in June 2010.

After that, you need to rebuild.

I still haven't gotten around to installing...

Ok, I was having some trouble with partitions, but I got it sorted out. Gparted is editing the partitions now and then I'll install. biggrin.gif

On a suggestion from bob-sama I'm trying out AntiVir, but Avast and AVG work too.

Windows 7 is the next operating system from Microsoft. RC stands for Release Candidate, which means that Windows 7 is in it's final testing stages. smile.gif

QUOTE (Cake @ May 16 2009, 10:31 AM) *

It's pretty much the stage after the Beta. Windows 7 is a new OS (like xp and vista) that's coming out in 2010. This free version only lasts until june 1 2010, so after the trial period you have to reinstall it with one you buy.

Anyways, I've had a terrible experience with this. I used gparted to resize and create partitions, but I was messing around seeing how much space was good, so I had to wait 5x as long because it had to resize from 30 to 25 back to 30 then to 15 then to 16. So my laptop's hard drive is getting incredibly hot after three hours, I leave the computer on to go to sleep. I wake up and it's finished (yay) and I succesfully install Win7. BUT I had NO IDEA IT WAS GOING TO DELETE GRUB!!! And I just threw my Ubuntu disk away a couple weeks ago because it was the old version...

So now I have to redownload Ubuntu then pop in the disk and recover Grub...

And I'm never going to use win7. cry.gif

Ok, I couldn't reinstall grub, so this kinda sucks, partially. I just deleted my whole ubuntu partition and resized windows 7 to 40gb. I'm going to go test if I can run games from a different partition from 7. I can already open up files from Win7 on Vista (Win7 is drive G:, although I have no idea how this happened...). Maybe I can run some games better. tongue.gif

Can't run combat arms, but I can run firefox. Meh, better than nothing.
