Full Version: Offence System Updated

Neo Avatars
As part of our focus on the RuneScape community, we’ve transformed our offence system; we’ve also made some changes to the Rules of RuneScape. Most importantly, many offences will now expire after 12 months.

The main reason we’ve done this is because we accept that many people learn from their previous mistakes, especially small offences committed long ago. This means that if you have an account that had offences on it, it’s entirely possible that they’ve been removed!

To support this, we no longer issue black marks, we simply record the offences themselves. If you log into the Ban Appeals page, you’ll see two pillars: one records offences that can result in being banned, the other records offences that can result in being muted. It should now be much simpler to see your account’s status and where you stand.

If you have an account that is still banned or muted after today, we’re allowing you another chance to submit an appeal. Our Player Support team will then reassess your offences and decide whether to remove some or all of them.

Furthermore, we have changed the system to allow players who have had their accounts stolen a chance to appeal offences that occurred while it was hijacked. Typically, this happened because the hacker unsuccessfully appealed, leaving the real owner with no chance to appeal for themselves. If you have ever had membership on the account and have built up a significant amount of game time, you’ll have another chance to appeal after 21 days.

The Rules of RuneScape

We’ve updated the way the rules are organised to make it simpler for you to report abuse and to keep yourself free of offences. The rules are now organised under three general headings (click here to read about the rules in full):
  • Honour
Offences related to cheating (like scamming, macroing, real-world trading, etc.)
  • Respect
Offences related to inappropriate behaviour (like obscene language, discrimination, bullying, etc.)
  • Security
Offences related to real-world safety and security threats (like asking for real-life contact details, website advertising, etc.)

To help out with this, we’ll also be updating the in-game report abuse feature. You’ll then see two screens – one for entering the player’s name, and another for selecting the rule they’ve broken.

Due to the size of this project, we’ve launched all of the website features today, while the in-game interface will be released with this week's server reboot.

Final Note

If you receive a ban or mute in-game, this will also prevent you from using the forums. Equally, if you receive a forum ban, you’ll be muted in-game. This is because we believe that players should be treated equally whether they’re playing the game or posting on the forums.

Please note that because of the changes to how different offences are treated, it’s possible that any ban or mute you are currently affected by may have changed. For example, if you had three days left of a five-day mute yesterday, today you could have five days left of a ten-day mute, or one day left of a three-day mute.

Jagex seem to be doing everything now that they should've done three years ago.

about freakin' time! XD

This looks just plain great, so many people are going to be able to get old banned accounts back. Also the idea of categorizing the rules is a good idea. But the only thing is, Jagex shoud've done this about two years ago and not waited so long. All in all this is just a plain great update!

Hi all you salsamanders out there! laugh.gif Oh yeah, YAY FIRST PAGE! laugh.gif

yes i know the clan as a whole is called Sals, but Salsamanders just sounds really funny.

It's not the update I thought it would be. I feel Jagex have only used this update to bring back more players in the game to compensate losing players over the wilderness and trade updates.

Glad they did that. It seemed a little dumb that players could talk trash on the forums and not face repercussions on their Runescape account other than a forum bann. Mabye my .3 black marks will be removed now smile.gif

Word tongue.gif Not that it is a bad thing, but most of these updates are long overdue. MMG's rein has been a good one so far. *prays*

Ooh, must check if my Mute has been lifted!
Wiltingplant
Am I the only one who thinks they're updating the wrong things? If you were an idiot with your account, you probably deserved to get it banned/muted. This is like the third "update" to the rules in the past year. dry.gif

This isn't really a groundbreaking change for the way warns are given out. It's like the Sal's warn removal system but it's not monthly.

YES!!! All blackmarks removed!

Tbh this is useless if their responses are automated. I hope they're able to fix that in the future.
Ledgendary
Nice update! Wewt. So is there like, a better chance to be a player mod or something? Since everyone kinda has no warns now and you have to have no warns to be a mod.

(Not begging to be a mod)
Way to Dawn

Agreed with Fin. How many out of how many responses does Jagex actually read. And the people who were banned now get to come back :l. But at the least I get a couple of my black marks pulled off.

Oh great, maybe this new system will help my cruddy reporting skills. I am a good player, but a lousy reporter. slanty.gif

Other than that, justice has been served on a nice warm platter. Enjoy!

Lol I didn't even know where to go to look at blackmarks, but I've probaly gotten some for misunderstood "offensive" language, anyway this seems like it will help a lot! woot!
Keldo
I have been hoping and waiting for this update for an extremely long time now. 3 years ago I said cut gems are worth more than uncut, and guess what, 5.0 black marks for me. That put me in a very cautious situation. In fact it was so extreme that I even kept all my chats off for 3 months after I received them as another offense would result in a permanent ban. closedeyes.gif

Now this fella right here has .0 black marks!! happy.gif
Aussie Pride
Yes, 0 Black marks except for that cruddy mute dry.gif But I have appealed and it hopefully will get accepted but if not then my mute expires on June 25th happy.gif Thanks a BILLION Jagex ice.gif
Magical
As the others have said, no idea if this will be any better, but certainly looks it :-) Good luck to anyone with an offense trying to get it unbanned etc.
Reno
My only offence expires in 4 days. I'm glad because I got muted for saying "az" when the censor blocked ass cute.png

This definitely is one of the better updates, isn't it?

Great, people who were banned are back. THEY DESERVED IT! (I support Wilt.) I never realised who many wannabe mods there were on Sals. huh.gif Seriously, why would you want to be one? Aside from a cool crown, there's really not much. You get to mute, that's all.

And then you get immature people turning mature when you're around, and then ask questions about the rules of Runescape, that can easily be accessed by the Runescape homepage. It's too much attention, I hate attention IRL, and I hate attention in a pixel world. biggrin.gif

I hate how I got muted for saying 'My School has tons of people listening to Green Day' ... The bot sucks.
Scry Arcane
I logged on to the appeal place and I saw an offence that was give on June 15th, 2008, could be re-appealed. I re-appealed and hopefully the warn will go away in time.

Green zone for both FTW.

Btw, June 15th is my birthday. I got 1 day muted on my birthday. dry.gif
-Nacho Ninja-
Yesterday I checked when one of mine expires, and it's today biggrin.gif

A good update as most people do learn over time and all of my 3 year old blackmarks have gone.

I had a legacy punishment on the previous system in which I was unable to appeal due to lack of evidence. Glad to see that is finally erased from my account and they took my suggestion for removing warns over time.

So you support effectively life-long punishments for anything, and call others idiots?

Repeat after me: hy-po-cri-te. By your own logic, you deserved it (censor evasion). Whether it was a decent reason or a crappy one is unimportant (see your post and Wiltingplant's), therefore you deserve that mute anyway. Hy-po-cri-te.

How is having a single blackmark on one's account being punished? I'm talking about the nitwits who weren't secure with their accounts (or worse yet, were idiots of their own free will) and are getting their then-banned accounts back because of a silly system. Ten blackmarks is an awful lot for to have piled up "accidentally".

How's that related to my question? Making offences last forever is effectively a perpetual punishment (because having one blackmark, just like having one warn, is being punished). We do indeed a similar "silly system" in place and it doesn't seem to not work...
djpailo
Even for the serious offences, I can't believe Jagex have basically made their punishments eternal. Everyone, even the most serious offenders, deserve a second chance. The fact that Jagex are worried that bringing these accounts back into the community could have a negative impact surely implies that they still believe RWT to be a massive problem.

Really? Because some of us played Runescape and made bad choices when we were really young and immature (before the 13+ rule applied) and now we have grown and matured and have to suffer the consequences of our past. I think real life gives us enough of that punishment, but including it in a game too? Doesn't seem necessary imo.
