Microsoft is planning to release a new free antivirus at the end of 2009. They announced Morro when Windows Live OneCare died, meaning it will no longer be sold after a certain date.

Here are some screenshots of the antivirus. If you want to read the article about Morro, go to this link.

Did you notice that Morro looks almost identical to Windows Defender. See Windows Defender screenshots here:

Am I sad if my thought immediately went to Morrowind when I saw this? sad.gif

Looks aren't everything, but you know something's amiss when Microsoft give things away for free aware.gif

Haven't you ever learned not judge a book by its cover?

A lot of things in software are under the hood and unseen its like a car this years model may look like last years model but under the hood it may have 200 more horsepower.

You just can't tell.

Thats not necessarily true either..

And the same logic could be applied to other companies who give things away but have high cost margins on other products.

Apple for example.

No, I think it's a makeover of Live OneCare.

I just read now that the name of the Antivirus will be Microsoft Security Essentials and will replace Windows Defender as well. The BETA is also scheduled to be released soon and I'm really looking forward to it! Is anyone here planning on testing it?

Ugh. I've just about had it with Microsoft. Make a product that works, and stick with it. Christ.

If Microsoft wants to upgrade it, they could improve it, and release the update in a Service Pack or something. I just think that they're suffocating people with 30 different protection products.

Unless Microsoft put in some amazing features to entice me in, I'm sticking with AVG. It seems to be just the successor to One Care, and as that had pretty awful virus detection results, Morro will probably be the same slanty.gif

I think Microsoft are undergoing a huge makeover. Hasn't Bill retired? Well with him out the way, maybe they can finally get away with all the things that people want and not what they want to make them money. First Bing, now this... maybe it's all planned for the release of Windows 7.

They got rid of One Care and this is supposed to replace defender so what are you getting at?

I can't believe people get so confused and angry when their given a choice pfft.gif

Meh, I'm going to test it, I thought they were making a free security suite?

I think this is supposed to be it. Morro does anti-virus and anti-spyware and there's already Windows Firewall. Pretty much a security suite, albeit basic.
Caboose
Not that much more basic than AVG Free, but it's performance that really matters.

Microsoft Security Essential's first BETA was released today. I installed it and everything is very smooth so far. Anyone thinking about trying it?
Caboose
Meh, i can't be bothered unless i know it's worth it.

This is a review (well, more of an overview...but he gives some opinions on it) on Morro, or MSE (I'm annoyed they renamed it, I liked Morro tongue.gif).
I'm probably not going to bother, it's not officially available in the UK so getting my grubby paws on it will be a hassle biggrin.gif I'm quite happy with AVG Free anyway.

I really want to see some detection rates for it though. It better not be as rubbish as OneCare, it's about time we got a decent free anti-virus bundled with Windows slanty.gif

I can't wait to see the detection rates as well. I'm confident it will do very well though.
