Full Version: Internet Explorer Advertisement Retired

Microsoft appears to have come to its senses over an advertisement that had some observers claiming it was the worst technology commercial ever.

The company has yanked official versions of the online-only ad for its Internet Explorer 8 Web browser off online video sites after users complained it was offensive. If you haven’t seen it, count yourself lucky.

If you really must watch it though, there are still copies floating around on YouTube. We’ve included one below. Warning: don’t watch it on a full stomach.

To recap, the ad shows a woman borrowing her husband’s laptop at the breakfast table, only to discover a Web site (unseen by the viewer) so disturbing in his browser’s history file that she vomits copiously and repeatedly all over the kitchen and her husband. Microsoft’s title for the ad is O.M.G.I.G.P., as in “Oh my god I’m going to puke.”

A Microsoft spokeswoman said the company created the ad as a “tongue-in-cheek look” at a feature in Microsoft’s new Internet Explorer 8 that allows users to prevent the browser from recording any trace of their browsing history. “While much of the feedback to this particular piece of creative was positive, some of our customers found it offensive, so we have removed it,” she said.

Many people find run-of-the-mill pornography offensive, but – just guessing here – very few people are so disturbed by it that they vomit when they see it. The Microsoft ad seems to suggest that the husband is involved in a Web fetish that’s far more troubling. Memo to Microsoft: probably best to avoid “creative” that implies you make software for people who are into something so unspeakable it causes your loved ones to lose their breakfast.

So, how many of you will switch to IE8 as a result? biggrin.gif

Whoever came up with that advertisement has serious issues to work out laugh.gif

Quite possibly the worst advert I have EVER seen. Disgusting, low budget, and looks like some terrible leftover from the 1970s.

Microsoft must be getting desperate biggrin.gif

I hadn't ever seen that ad..glad I hadn't now.
To be honest it makes me want to not use IE8, it makes firefox or chrome seem all that more appealing biggrin.gif

Blow up that commercial.
Poke
FF has private browsing too.

IE is so ugly it would make anybody puke in the first place.
Natt39
What in the name of all that is good and holy was that?!

Why the hell would someone throwing up make me want to switch to IE?
Mini
I didn't watch it, as I'm literally chomping on a cookie right now.
Seeing these comments, I'm glad i didn't.

Am I honestly the only one to think that was f---ing hilarious?
Desireful
That made me uninstall firefox and download IE 8.

Seeing as FF, Chrome, and Safari all have porn modes now too that ad wouldn't have worked anyway.

Plus one can just click like 3 things and delete all history anyway.

it would have been a little more pleasant if she shizzle herself.

bit funnier too

Wonder why it was taken down......?

Rofl... I'm sticking with FF... I hated IE8... I don't like how it looks, it was slow, it always crashed for me, and it was more complicated that IE7.
Firefox ftw!

Wow, knowing that a wife pukes and a husband watches porn makes me want IE8 so much more now!

No, for real... it didn't do anything for me. I don't hate it more, nor do I like it more. I'm just sticking with my FireFox smile.gif
Arianna
No one said he watched porn.

Might as well just a good ol' necrophilia website.

Yes.
Redicaluss
Okay so they basically just told everyone that now they have a feature that lets you watch porn without getting caught.

BTW, Chrome had this way before anyone else. Like last year. Get with the program, peoples tongue.gif
redmonke
Fairly sure there was a firefox addon for this before chrome was released.

Yup. Chrome was released on 2nd September 2008. One FF private browsing add-on, Stealther, was last updated in June 2008, and that's just one add-on.

No, but that's not the point. The whole idea of FF is you don't get stuff out of the box, you add extra stuff to suit you.
