Full Version: New Rule

Muttmuttinthebutt
I propose a new rule to stop people from posting members IP addresses. I think that's an invasion of privacy, and stupid too.
Gillis
If you're referring to Ptolemy, he purposely impersonated Po22 and spammed another member's forum. He shouldn't have done that in the first place and he should have known that administrators and moderators can see the IPs of the posters.

Posting it should be against the rules though. How would you like it if I posted yours?
Po22
Mutt, your just mad because we figured it out and now we are just doing what is right. Your not even involved.
Dwarrior
I'm assuming this is addressed to Ptolemy, but he brought that upon himself. No one's fault, but his own.

I honestly wouldn't care.

Why? Because no one on this forum is smart enough to be able to attack my ip address and if they are they aren't stupid enough to waste time attacking my ip address.

And he should have thought of what revealing his IP address would do before he did what he did.

I would be very mad if you did it unprovoked, but if I had recently spammed your forum under another person's name, I would deserve it.
Muttmuttinthebutt
I've seen this happen to other people too. I want to make it against the rules.

Could we get posters in here not from Team Weiner pl0x? Kthxbai.

@Dad: Your IP address can be used to hack you.

Don't kid yourself. Mutt was almost definitely involved. At the least I'm betting he knew about it.

You're not involved and it was totally justified.

I must say I agree. However, since there is apparently a big story surrounding this. Some things justify the means.
When you spam attack other forums, I believe your rights are diminished a bit.

Even though 85% of the forum agrees.

Team Weiner is Gillis, Xraven, Noisia, and Fishee. Gillis is the only one to post. You sir have just failed.

Your really immature for hating on some people in the forum just because they were better at a puzzle than you. Let it go.

~Razorlike

While it is true that doing so would diminish one's rights, we don't really care what people do off of our forums. As long as it isn't done in the name of Sal's, it is none of our business. As a result, rights on these forums aren't affected by actions on other forums, such as Paradise City in this case.

That said, adding a rule against posting other members' IPs is completely ridiculous. The rules are not intended to cover every single case that will ever come up; rather, they are a set of guidelines to follow. In cases which are not covered by the rules, it is up the moderators' discretion as to what action is taken. This is one of those cases where it will be up to moderator discretion whether this is punishable or not.

I agree with Steve's first part, and even if someone were to get in trouble for something they did somewhere else, it should not compromise their computer's safety.

As for the second part, there's no rule, even a general one, protecting someone's privacy and safety, so I personally think something should be added for that.

Depends, if someone from another forum posted here:

I'm afraid that you can't control who posts in a public thread. Even if you wished, no you can't.

Hit Nail -> head

You can be punished for infringing on someone's privacy. This is not such a serious case, though.
Kaibamanjrs
Your IP address being posted on the forum won't expose you to any harm. People are scanning ip ranges daily looking for machines with vulnerabilities. Secure your system, and stop whining.
Ptolemy
I was stupid to go out with my friends and let my thirteen year old brother on the computer. It was my fault, and I deserve all of this.

As for the rule, there's no point in it. If I get hacked, I can report it and the hacker could get in trouble with his ISP.

How would your 13 year old brother know who Po22 is? Also, Mutt said he knew all along who was impersonating Po. Your story is flawed.

This isn't a debate on who did what, this is a debate on a new rule.

No, this is just another of your whiny suggestions that you posted because your friend spammed the h*ck out of another forum and got what he deserved.

Dwarrior
He didn't get hacked.
Muttmuttinthebutt
But giving his IP address can lead to hacking.
Dwarrior
Honestly, if he is stupid enough to not have anti-virus and other protection on his computer he deserves to be hacked. As was said earlier, people constantly scan for IP's without proper protection to hack everyday.

Po22 is very famous and my brother is Da Dutchman. He of course knows who Po22 is.

I believe it was Common Sense who opposed this last year.

I wouldn't care if my IP address was public. It changes every now and then anyway.
