Full Version: The Nuts And Bolts Of Mechscape (ideas - Not Official)

Well, I'm going to get right down to it, I'm here to point out things that Jagex did with Runescape and see how the might incorporate it in their own way into Mechscape.

For starters, we all know the goal of many players is to obtain a skillcape. Now, in a sci-fi and futuristic world I don't think a spaceship pilot will be running around with a pretty polka-dot cape going, "I have 99 in oxygen masks!" it just wouldn't look right. I want to stop right here to say that this is only if they keep skills the same way they are now.

Now, my question for YOU is this: What do you think they will do for players who reach 99 in a certain skill?

I think that they might: Give those players access to a variety of items/clothing/stuff only available to players with the correct 99

EDIT: I will have more questions put in at a later time.

When the project was first conceived, the team started out by analyzing the current sci-fi MMOs and discovering why they weren't truly successful in the market. They discovered that these games were nothing more than fantasy mechanics dressed in a sci-fi wrapper. Having a set of skills that you level up through grinding is basically a fantasy mechanic. So from here they identified what game mechanics make a good sci-fi game, and they've developed most of these as completely unique features that have never been seen in any MMO before. Of course any real details on that are yet to be announced.

Is this new game a futuristic version of RuneScape?
'This is not RuneScape in space' has been our motto since day one on the development front.

It doesn't sound like there'll be skills to grind up, so no 99s and no skill capes. Even if there were things like skills, I doubt the magic number would still be 99... 173 sounds much nicer. biggrin.gif

If it will be any type of mmorpg you have to have skills to some extent. Considering that Runescape thrived because of the players devotion to skills and that most of the players will be coming from Runescape, Jagex may appeal to the players desire to see skills incorporated into the game.

But, it may just be that the skills are not there, but that you better yourself along the way and gain access to new features that you can only acquire through "Leveling Up." And what happens when you reach the pinnacle of your abilities? You receive a special artifact of sorts to prove that you have done so. happy.gif

It's called progression. It's in WoW, as you progress through the game you get better gear. When you hit the level cap at 80, you do harder stuff to progress. when you get the best gear, you wait for an update so you can progress more. Skills=grind, progression= doing dungeons with friends and having fun while doing it. in WoW you prove you've hit lv80 by having lv80 epics. Your special artifact is better, cooler gear. it's like being lv132 or w/e in RS and having full bandos and a god sword, though you don't look like everyone else who grinded for hours on end.
