Or at least, part of a new computer!! Woohoo! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

huh.gif

Here's what happened in short. I had an Impervio-built OCZ SXS 500W power supply that went up in fabulous smoke. I had an Asrock A780GXE/128M motherboard (open-box from NewEgg) that joined it. So now I'm out a power supply and motherboard. The processor will be torn out but I have no way to verify if it's good or bad (I don't have another AM2 board to fudge around with). I'll put it like this: it died when booting with a fabulously disappointing load.

Athlon 64 3500+ Lima (45W)
Wintec AMPX 2x1GB DDR2 800 CL6
Asrock A780GXE/128M
Radeon HD 3200 IGP
Seasonic Barracuda 7200.7 160GB

Oh well. But it's time to replace what was lost. I have to build this machine and make sure it works, so I was thinking of different ways to do such. The first and foremost idea is to swap out my current main setup into this box with a new PSU. My normal PC's specs follow...

Pentium E2140 1.6GHz @ 3.2GHz
A-DATA Vitesta Extreme Edition 2x2GB DDR2 800 CL4
Abit IP35-E
Radeon HD 3850 256MB
2 x Western Digital Caviar SE16(/Blue) 320GB
Western Digital Caviar Black 1000GB

I was going to swap out the E2140 + IP35-E after ordering (and receiving, of course) a new motherboard and processor. I want top performance for <$300, including this graphics card... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814125251

I will need a power supply, motherboard, and processor. Any ideas? Don't worry about my power supply or anything; I've got it all covered. I need a unit that can run the E2140 overclocked, as well as a hard drive, an optical drive, and a floppy drive/memory card reader.

I'm confused, you contradict yourself a lot. You said you want a motherboard, CPU and PSU and Graphics Card but then you start talking about other stuff, anyway i'll work with that:

or a 550BE. You could use a 4670 and still be in budget, i would do that.

I lost the Asrock A780GXE. I need a motherboard for my main because I'm going to move this to the backup machine.
I lost the OCZ SXS 500W. I'm going to replace that power supply as it was powering the backup. I need a new low-wattage, high-efficiency power supply.
The IP35-E doesn't have onboard graphics. The HD4350 is to remedy that problem. I don't need extra graphics performance that much, so I'll keep the 3850 on the main and use the 4350 on the backup. That's just $35 0f my budget thrown out the window.
I'm not trusting the 3500+ that much and NewEgg has some nice combo deals (hint, hint). I need a new processor.

I'm going to shoot down a few of your suggestions, Caboose, for various reasons.
-The power supply is low-wattage but also more expensive than comparable power supplies. Look lower-end Corsair and into Seasonic.
-The Regor's not bad, but I'd prefer a triple-core or quad-core. The unlocking-cores thing is a crapshoot, and there may be some lucrative deals on triple-core or quad-core processors and motherboards.
-Nobody seems to have any real experience with that motherboard. It's not that bad otherwise.

Just as a point of reference; I'm still crunching with WorldCommunityGrid. Mainly HCC and HFCC work units, with the occasional Beta thrown in for good measure. If a processor can get decent points-per-day, I'll be more inclined to use it. I know that the Phenom II X4 940 at 3.4GHz puts out ~16,500 points per day, which is about equal to a Q6600 at similar clock speeds. Don't worry about cooling or accessories; I'll be using the Scythe Infinity and I have plenty in the way of my usual TIM and cleaner.

Okay, so you already have the graphics card? You just want the CPU, Mobo and PSU? High performance but on a budget.

I'm not going to give you combo deals because they'll be gone before long, and i can't be bothered to keep updating it. If you want one look for it yourself. Also, why aren't you looking for this yourself? tongue.gif

I'm curious as to what you'll think of. And please, do give combo deals. This will be ordered today or tomorrow in all likelihood.
Caboose
That Antec PSU looks like just what you need, but the wattage might be too low. What do you think?

No combo deals, sorry, i can't be bothered and since i was looking for lower powered CPUs there weren't actually any notable ones. But this looks good, CPU has excellent reviews, i know that motherboard and it's very good and as i said before that PSU looks to me to be just what you're after.

And Bob, remember that ACC isn't just for unlocking cores. It was designed to enable massive overclocks, which could be handy since this one can overclock to 3.32GHz in less that 10 mins tongue.gif
Bob-sama
wink.gif We'll see. I'm tempted to just say "screw it" and toss what died and call it a day. It's all been a big headache. Any other suggestions? I'm not going with an Asus board; their RMA service is beyond horrible.
Caboose
Since it's Open Box wouldn't it be Newegg who would be in charge of the returns policy? But Asus boards themselves are great, it seems a shame to miss that chance because of it.

And sure, screw it if you want. But that would leave you with only three desktop PCs ohmy.gif Why don't you sell them all off for parts and use that money to get one that will last you for like a decade?

Because 1) they wouldn't net much and 2) I have uses for each. I'm basically declaring the 3500+ box dead and I'll get the P4 box running.
Caboose
So i take it you've made up your mind? Really though, P4s are kinda old. Aren't they all single core anyway?

A netbook is about the same. And yeah--I'll save the money as the 940 combo expired today. sad.gif
Caboose
940? I suggested the 810... do you listen to anything i say? tongue.gif

But i thought you already had a netbook, what's the point in having a nettop too, that's rather large.
