Full Version: Skill Calculator Suggestions!

I'm sure that most of you know that I've been working on the big site overhaul (aka. the "Site Refresh") for awhile now, and I think this is the perfect time to give the calculators the TLC they deserve. tongue.gif I know, they're slow, they don't work well when you're playing RuneScape, and they're a bit clunky to use, but that will all change with this next version!

Firstly, the new calculators will NOT be written in Java, mainly because of all the reports of them not working well with RuneScape (or not working, period dry.gif ). Secondly, they will fit much better with the site's design/theme.

I've collected a few ideas mentioned in this forum in the past, along with a few ideas of my own, but I'd still like to hear what YOU would like to see in the skill calculators -- how would you improve them? What features would you like to see? If you don't use our current calculators, why don't you? All ideas, suggestions, and [constructive] feedback, big or small, are welcome. After all, who would know what needs to be changed to improve these things better than the people who use them? biggrin.gif

Thanks for your help!
Jose0
Ugh, should be much better, I never used the calcs here because they took some time loading...
I'd just want that, instead of having to press calculate, the results would immediatly update themselves.

When I do play, I find the built in calcs on SwiftKit to be faster to access because there on the same screen, but that's just for the sake of convenience.

Personally there's a few things I wonder about the site overhaul but I want to see if any of my guesses are correct or not as a surprise tongue.gif.

I ask of only 1 thing to add to the calculators... well... a few...

1. For the Mining skill calculator, create options to calculate experience for "ore bars". What this mean is that a "mithril ore bar" considers the experience of 1 mithril ore and 4 coal ores.

2. Add features/options to account for Sacred Clay equipment. Be careful though, with shark gloves/swordfish gloves it is not quadruple, but rather triple experience.

3. Highscores look-up feature.

Hmm...
I'm not really sure what you could add (except for items that are released like the Sacred Clay).
I think its good that you're moving away from Java, I tried them once and it wouldn't load so I began to use Tip.Its and have ever since (I'll prob. change when you update though).

I don't use them because they do seem out of date abit (and they interfere with Runescape, which you probably know).
One thing I like about the Tip.its calculators is that you can choose the expierence you want to aim for, not just the level (E.G. I don't want 99 Fishing, I want 20 million Fishing exp).

What I prefer is an option where you not type your current exp but your current level, when you are offline this would be so much better. Although a bit more inaccurate it would be good for offline. And true that microhelper is better.
Kemosabe
I would like to see the calculators as a downloadable tool.
redmonke
I used to use Zybez' calculators because they were fast and more complete.

I'd like to be able to see what it takes to go from a level other than mine own. Like if I'm 90 cooking, but I want to know how many sharks to cook to go from 94-99. Or from like 50-99.

If there is already a way to do this then it needs to be updated because I can't figure it out. pfft.gif

Well, that's not hard - you just say you're current cooking is, say, 94, when really it is 90 to find out how many.

My computer loads all other bits of the site quickly, but the calcs take ages.
But I'd like to be able to enter in a goal xp (so, you don't just want say, 99 in a skill, you want 15m xp - we can't do this on the current calcs).
Also, it would be nice to be able to enter in a current level, rather than the xp (what if I want to work out how how many iron ore it will take to get to 50 mining, when I'm still at 10 Mining and I can't mine it yet. I'd have to work out the xp you need for 15, then add that in).

If its inaccurate i don't see the point, you could get your exp of the hiscores.

I would definitely lean towards making the Calculators the same platform as the one's on Tip.It. They are fast and easy and you can have them open without in fear of getting a Random Event or something. tongue.gif

King Reaper
maybe instead of clickin calculate it does it self
and it saves ur rs name so u dont have to type it over and over
Veni vidi vici
I'd just like them to work in general wink.gif.
They work okay at the moment, as they serve their purpose, but they do need to be upgraded. Most of the data in them is up-to-date, they just need to be written to work faster. The icons for the calcs should also be updated.

Dr Skull
1. Add combat calculators (With a large variety of monsters)
2. Add Sacred Clay/Stealing Creation Tools
3. Add target experience
4. Be able to enter your current level

Agility
1. Add the advanced courses
2. It looks like for the Yanille course you have each and every obstacle, while for the other courses you don't. I think just the complete course is fine.

Construction
1. No suggestion, but I'd like to say that I love the layout of it. wub.gif

Firemaking
1. Barbarian firemaking needs to be added
2. Pyre ships need to be added
3. Add logs in fireplace
4. Add fixing the Dorgeshuun light bulb
5. It would also be nice if you could separate some stuff into different categories so they're not all clumped into one list. Perhaps you could separate into categories such as: logs, pyre logs, barbarian firemaking (Not exactly sure what it's really called), and other

Fletching
1. Half-bows need to be added (See below)
2. Things such as stocks, attaching limbs, and stringing need to be added for the crossbows(See below)

Hunter
1. You may want to rename the category "Impetuous Impulses" to "Implings", as I didn't realize that both the maze and non-maze implings were there.

Prayer
1. It would be nice if all of the altars could be added, not just a gilded altar
2. 1 and 2 incense burners need to be added

Smithing
1. All of the actual items that you can smith need to be added

Summoning
1. Summoning Familiars needs to be added
2. Ability Scrolls need to be added
3. Not a suggestion, but I absolutely love how they're currently separated by charms. wub.gif

Thieving
1. Sq'irk juice needs to be added (See below)

Woodcutting
1. It would be nice if you could separate the logs and canoes into different categories

It will be nice to have non-Java calculators. wub.gif

All of those suggestions sound great, Skull you obviously put in alot of thought for your post wub.gif
The only other things I can think of are Zeal and Penguin Points. They're not as hard to work out as some people think, as long as you know the formula it's pips biggrin.gif

Nails are missing, though I'm unsure if 1 Plank + 1 Nail gives 33 or 29xp since the KB says different things in different places. bleh.gif

1. It's already there under 'Fletch Box Xp'.
2. Also already there in the various columns.

Using Java to write these calcs was really an oversight on my part, which is made worse when you use the calculators while playing RuneScape (since RS is a CPU-intensive game, other Java apps are going to run slow because of how the JVM is designed). They definitely won't be written in Java this time around!

Immediate updating will definitely be available. biggrin.gif

So an option to account for bonuses of equipment/places/items (like burying bones at gilded altars, or wearing karamja gloves? That's definitely doable. biggrin.gif

The only trouble with Zeal/Penguin points is that the amount of XP is variable (it relies on your current level), but I'm pretty sure I can find a way around that. smile.gif

Hearing they will not be written in Java has made my day. Attempting to load the java applet makes my Computer cry in pain so thank you. wub.gif

I agree with whoever mentioned about Stealing Creation Equipment, it would stop me having to ask how many bars/exp they last.

The formula is 25x skill level, so the calculator would have to modify the experience per penguin point based on what the calculator views your current level as.

As for Zeal, I have no clue. unsure.gif

Huh, I've never had trouble loading the calcs, but if everyone was having problems, it's a smart fix.

I'm not sure about anything that could be added to the calcs themselves, but maybe you could make those Skill Planners, like Tip.It has.
Here's the link to the planners
Dr Skull
I also think a house planner should be added. smile.gif
Muttmuttinthebutt
All I ask is that they actually appear and work now. smile.gif
mad max
instead of just calc's you could add planner's u know so lets say i have X amout of logs/charms etc etc i could put that info into a planner and figure out how much xp i would get

2 suggestions that would be so useful.......
1) a Max hit calculator which allows you to show different equipment setups, and show your max hit depending on strength level and other things like strength potions, or the dba special.
2) aslo same idea just make a max hit range calculator to see what you can hit with different arrows/bolts

These would be a great improvement
