So I'm buying a pair of vintage speakers! (Hey, they're new to me!!) I'm a bit of a Polkie and I've been looking into getting a good system for myself. I finally found a pair of speakers on the cheap. I was originally going to buy a pair of Polk Monitor 7C's. However, the seller made available his SDA-CRS+'s but for a bit more than I was willing to spend. The distance became too far to justify the increased cost. I spotted another pair of CRS+'s on the cheap and started bidding on them on eBay, but the seller sold them on Craigslist. angry.gif So that fell through. I started going back through all my options and found a pair of Polk Monitor 10B's on the cheap. They're a bit scratched up but the $60 price-tag for the pair is worth the risk. I'm going to go pick them up either this weekend or next. I've got my eyes on a few different amps. I was thinking of buying a new entry-level receiver for ~$230-290, though. I'm probably going to borrow a vintage amp until I make up my mind on a more permanent source. As of right now, I'm leaning towards an Audio-GD Compass as DAC & pre-amp and grabbing a studio power-amp. Source is going to be my computer (for now at least). Temporarily, that means I'll be using onboard sound. Later on, I'll be swapping to a half-decent external DAC.

I'm excited to get these speakers. They'll hold me over until I can find a second pair of SDA-CRS+'s. This is the start to second expensive hobby. happy.gif

So any would-be audiophiles around; what are you all running? I've got these Monitor 10B's coming. Out in the living room I have the first pair of Polk SDA-CRS+'s running off some entry-level Sherwood integrated amp.

Speakers built into my laptop.

Sound isn't really a big importance to me. pfft.gif

Too lazy to find specifics, but my yahama receiver (Amazing $40 yard sale steal) with 7.1 works well smile.gif (I'm no audiophile though)

Wish my good (ol') 4.1 system worked.. sad.gif
It even had bass, and long cable on 2 of the speakers. (Bigtime..)
But its not working, now back to ...... ol' cheap speakers that makes noise on low volume.. dry.gif (Its only 2.0 sound sad.gif )
I needz surround for pro play on Halo.. blush.gif (You can hear where the enemy is coming from biggrin.gif )

Well my setup is to be music-primary. One of the major reasons I went with these Monitor 10's was because of strong performance across the spectrum. These things are said to have even too much bass; I'll need to see about that exactly. The only downside is I'm going to have to make stands for each. The front is supposed to be 9.25" and the back 8.875" off the ground. I'll probably hack something together for that; probably simple wood stands with an additional back brace (courtesy of over tightening screws; making a simple foot bench support an adult elephant).I'll probably start work on a design now even; it's easy enough to fire up AutoCAD and figure something out with 3/4" thick wood.

I'm going to be borrowing an integrated amplifier a bit later. smile.gif My room is rather small so even a solid 45W will probably make them oppressively loud.

I expect to replace the cloth covers ($5/yard at a craft store) and maybe even rebuild the frames on the covers. I hope all the mid-drivers and the sub-woofer is decent condition; I can replace the tweeters easily as I have access to an octet of the same model, pulled years ago from a pair of monster SDA-SRS's.

To be honest, I expect to replace these speakers within the next ~year with a pair of the SDA-CRS's or CRS+'s. Depending on how my budget looks then, a "4.1TL" conversion is in order. Besides that, I've got a few choices for driving them. A Zero DAC/headphone amp/preamp is cheap at $160 or so. An Audio-GD Compass is quite a bit better but costs $360ish.

I can buy any number of vintage or new amps (typically AV receivers in this day and age; the nice thing is that newer AV receivers have internal DACs). What I really look for is linear response from the lowest to the highest frequencies. These speakers are probably going to be bass-heavy, but I can deal with that I guess.

I'll post pictures as soon as I get them setup. Vintage sound goodness. smile.gif
