A new interview with Mark Gerhard, Henrique Olifiers, and Adam Tuckwell has just been released (two days ago). In it we find confirmations to things many of us suspected or hoped for, but couldn't be sure about.

QUOTE
We have created this unique universe, and a massive back-story to the whole thing. We did that for years, and then we started assembling the game.
QUOTE
Mechscape, which isn’t the final name...
They've decided for certain that they're not going with the name MechScape.
QUOTE
So the game universe is very fluid; it changes based on how you react with other players and NPCS. It’s very different from that perspective. Just to give you a hint, his game doesn’t have XP {Experience points].

Amazing. I'm really looking forward to this now. biggrin.gif

An RPG... doesn't have experience...
I'm confused even more now.

Just so you know, I actually conducted the interview for another Intent Media publication - Develop Magazine. In short, I had to cut out quite a bit of the tech answers out of the interview you've all seen (The reason it might seem a little disjointed).

I'm not allowed to say what is missing from the CG.biz interview, as it is being used for a news story in Develop's print edition. After that is out (not long now), a full version of the interview will go up on www.develop-online.net, so keep an eye out in a couple of weeks.

That'll probably be ~3 weeks time since the last edition was available July 21st.

Game with no XP sounds lame. While it'll get rid of some grind-- unless there's grind involved elsewhere--it'll be dreadfully boring without a system to gauge how far you are from a level up or a step of character improvement if there are no levels.

Uh, yeah, I am too. But I'm also excited, lol. Even if the game is horrible, just making an MMORPG that isn't based on XP seems nearly impossible.

Lame? Yeah, it's tough to imagine what they could have done to help the characters evolve, change, become stronger, etc. But taking a step that far outside the "rules" of MMORPG's is quite risky. I don't think any company would spend 6 years on a game that far outside the boundaries unless they had something even better in the works.

I guess we'll have to wait and see, but I'm starting to get a little tired of waiting. Well, technically that's why I created my website, because I was tired of waiting and I wanted to do something, but I'm getting even more tired of waiting, lol.

How do you think people feel about Guild Wars 2? The beta for that was supposed to come out LAST november-- and We'd heard about it for many years before that.

As long as JaGEx makes it better than Runescape. At least give the people fingers..

No exp. I'm confused. Jagex said that there might be missions so you may get rewards by doing those missions instead of earning the rewards...
That thing about the Universe changing sounds complex. Will it be like how we can see The Great Wall of China from Space? I guess only time or a bunch of more interviews will tell.

EDIT: Read the interview, I saw a heap of spelling errors. They should do something about that.
Easl
Oo no exp, maybe you just improve by your gear?
Flatypus
Maybe there will be different ranks depending on what species you are instead of levels.
Adam?
No xp sounds like a great idea if handled correctly. Most MMOs nowadays are simple grindgrindgrind, and it'd be nice to see a decent game that didn't do that.

You can have progression without grind. If you can, give me an example.

The more I've been thinking of this and where they mentioned the good sci-fi games being about research, and it keeps reminding me of OGame. It's pretty simple and not anything like we can expect MechScape to be, but it's an alternative to the xp thing. On the other hand, it involves mostly waiting instead of grinding, which won't work very well in this case.

I doubt MechScape will be very much like OGame at all, but it is proof that a game can be made without xp and grinding.

I love XP

Experience works for fantasy games, but since this is a sci-fi game (And I mean sci-fi, not Steampunk), it doesn't really work. Sure some games have tried it (like SW Battlefront, to some extent), but the combat sci-fi games, especially 1st- or 3rd-person shooters, shouldn't have experience and levels, just harder enemies and upgraded weapons. Still, you have to have some way to measure your progress, so there might be number-based levels of some sort or another. It'll be fun to find out tongue.gif .

I'm starting to think MechScape is going more towards MMO rather than MMORPG. Maybe also with a few hints towards FPS. I'd love to see MechScape involving actual strategy and skillful thinking/use of weapons or whatever.

I'm thinking more of a third-person shooter version of an MMORPG. Like an RPG with MMO concepts applied.

I don't think this game is going to be huge success. From what I've heard anyway.

I don't see why they didn't just make it like Runescape, but in the future? But now it sounds like their messing about with it and totally ruining it.
That's my opinion anyway.

Wow, you have your opinions switched from almost every person in the world, rofl. Most are thinking it's going to be RuneScape in space, and they're hating on the game because of it! laugh.gif We don't know much of anything about the gameplay, so we have to wait and see what that's like, but from what it sounds like to me, some of the programming feats are amazing.
Analogy
there are different ways to get 'xp', like badges or something which unlock new stuff...

SCI FI RULES =]

This topic name needs to be corrected or I won't post in here again!

EDIT: Mechscape is spelled wrong. It disturbs me- I'm a little OC about spelling. It's like fingernails on chalkboard.
