Does anyone else think Mount Rushmore is a bad thing?
It is governed by the National Park Service, which a government agency and mount rushmore was basically funded by the government in its creation.
I think its a gross display of nationalism, having leaders huge heads sculpted onto a huge mountain.
No one should be glorified as much as that.
If you look at it, each president was human and had many flaws, especially Lincoln.
Why our government decides to honor one of the most unconstitutional presidents in history really puzzles me.
What really got me not liking Mount Rushmore is that what if the government decides to do a new Mount Rushmore, but with Presidents from 1940 and on? Imagine if they put Obama's and/or George W Bush's head on it, that would anger many people? I would be offended by both displays.
Should we have even funded this thing?
To be honest, a giant sculpture of a leader's head is something you would find in like North Korea.

Would you like all National monuments to be erased? And what of the plan for a Crazy Horse monument? Should we get rid of that as well? Should France and England rename all their street names such as Waterloo, Austerlitz, etc?
I think it's fine to be their.
And if you took it down, what would be left of the mountain?

Well what France and England choose to do is up to them. And I'm not saying if they are already there they should be erased, I just don't like the idea of a mount rushmore.
and as for crazy horse monument, I had no idea one was going on, but if Wikipedia is correct, then it is not funded by the government and if someone decides to do that with their own money, I don't really care(as opposed to mount rushmore which was funded by government, and is currently run by it)

But also, each president accomplished some outstanding things, especially Lincoln.
Plus, Mount Rushmore helps South Dakota's economy out quite a bit. I'd hate to see it go.

I don't agree with all the Presidents who are up there, but Po22 is right...it's a sampling of the US' history.
Maybe we should delete history from everything, by your logic.

I think it's totally fine, although I think I would be against the creation of a new, similar monument depicting any president, unless it was depicting all of them.

It's just like every other statue ever made except bigger. Besides, it's not like any of the presidents who are on there had it built in their own image. That would be a little North Korea.

There's nothing wrong with it at all... it's not propaganda. Those men did amazing things.

If they were to put forward the construction now, I am sure there would be great opposition. Espicially as the land did once belong to Native Americans.
Now it is already here and is a useful part of Dakota's tourism. Also, more things should be protected by the Government. The British government's done little to protect our rich Heritage which is why we have the National Trust which is a private company that owns most buildings of historical interest.

I highly doubt that that would be the opposition's main concern.

A) The difference between the presidents on Mt. Rushmore and N. Korea is that Abraham Lincoln didn't say "I want to see my self immortalized in granite FOREVER. NO ONE SHALL FORGET MY GREATNESS! BWAHAHAHAHA" someone else decided he deserved that honor.
B) Just because some has flaws doesn't mean they don't deserve to be honored. By your logic, every statue or painting of a famous person is some sort of propaganda.

What about Crazy Horse? The rest of the Black Hills? The badlands? Museums in the badlands about discoveries in the badlands? The falls? Devil's Gulch? What about those!?

I think they should have never been made in the first place, mainly because it's almost like making these guys idols. Of course they were icons, but the men are not perfect like most, and shouldn't have a mountain carved out after them. At the same time I think it's part of history and should be preserved, like art work. It shows alot about history, and how things have changed, because this certainly would not happen today. I can't even imagine putting Obama on a statue, it's like making a rock statue out of Britney Spears and placing her in the middle of Trafalgar Sq (in my mind lol.

Well, at least they put it in the middle of South Dakota. If it was sitting in the middle of the National Mall, that'd be a different story...

I think there's nothing wrong with it. It's a cool display of art, and of some of the best presidents we ever had. Sure, today there are many people that would be angry over a GWB or Obama head, but back then i dont think people were too mad.

So, let me get this straight, you dont want to honor the people that did so much for America? Why not? They did so much for us and the least we can do is build them a f*****g monument.

In all honesty, it's a bit of an eyesore. I don't think the concept of a head in a mountain is such a good idea, as they erode over the years and there's little way to maintain them.

I don't honestly see the point of this debate. So what u are basically calling for Zon i the removal of one of ur nation's national symbols that provides livelihood to thousands if not millions just because humans are on it?
In that case let us also remove the Lincoln Memorial and that statue of Nelson Mandela in Trafalgar Square yes? No one really cares. Hell to most Americans, it's a landmark to be admired.
