Helpful Topics and How to Get the RuneScape text.
Written by: Poke
Special thanks to:
Spoiler: Click to Toggle the Spoiler.
This guide will show you some helpful topics while faking. The first will get you the RuneScape text.

WolfieMario's Font Files.

DISCLAIMER: The guide below is based on Windows Vista and FireFox. Different Windows systems may not matter much, but if you have a Mac or something like that, the below guide on fonts may not work for you. Sorry.

1. Visit the topic via the link in this topic.
2. Download the fonts. I find MediaFire best.
3. Open it up in your Downloads.

4. It's a .zip file. You'll need an unzipping program like WinZip. I'm using IZArc. You can download that here.
5. Click on it to open up whatever unzipping program you're using.
6. Extract it to anywhere you like.
7. Find the extracted file.

8. With that file still open, open up your start menu.
9. In the 'Start Search' box at the bottom, type in 'fonts'

10. Open up the top one, below the 'Programs' heading.
11. Copy the RuneScape TTF font file into the fonts folder.
12. If a permission notice comes up, press yes.
13. Open up Paint or whatever program you have.
14. Press the Text tool.
15. Select 'RuneScape Chat'
16. Type away!
17.
18. Repeat as many times as you want for as many different fonts.

OR

1. Once you've downloaded and unzipped the file, open it up.
2. Right click on the TTF file and select 'Install'
3. Click yes.

WolfieMario's Faking Kit.
The RuneScape interface handily compiled into one handy kit.

The Group Faking Kit.
While decent, it's outdated. If you find the chatbox on WolfieMario's a bit hard to decipher (which I do) you can use the chatbox in this, then copy/paste the Game tab from below the chatbox from WolfieMario's kit onto your newly made chatbox.

Beret's Faking Kit.
Seriously outdated, but decent if you want to learn the basics. I wouldn't reccommend using it as the go-to-guide. Marks will be knocked off your fake for the outdated interface.

Right, I think that's all the helpful topics. Now, onto getting your fake done.

Programs for Making a Fake.
Written by: Poke
Special thanks to:
Spoiler: Click to Toggle the Spoiler.
So, you have all the text downloaded. Now you need some programs for faking in.

Paint
The staple program. Pretty much everything can be done in Paint. You don't need to splurge hundreds of pounds on a copy of PhotoShop. Paint is fine. If you think paint is rubbish and you can't do a thing in it, you're wrong. Paint comes free with any Windows computer. If you have a different computer or you removed it, sorry, I can't help you there.

Paint.NET
Some people call it the step up from Paint. You can download it for free here.
While it has some digital effects, there's a lot of problems with copy/pasting. If you have this and Paint, I would suggest you use Paint for the overall fake, and Paint.NET to add the finishing touches, such as effects.

GIMP
I haven't fully explored GIMP, so I can't tell you how good it is for faking. Again, I only use it for finishing touches. For example, this fake. The text and editing was in Paint, the gas was made in GIMP. It's basically the poor man's PhotoShop. You'll need to look at a few tutorials before you can grasp this. It can be downloaded for free here.

PhotoShop
The expensive and complicated one. It has the most effects and the most adaptability. You'll need to look at a lot of tutorials before you can get to grips with PhotoShop. You can download the trial here. After that's ran out, you have to pay for it, and it costs a lot.

Making a Chatbox.
Written by: Poke
Special thanks to:
Spoiler: Click to Toggle the Spoiler.
Making a chatbox is the staple part of a fake. It's used to express and describe the fake you're making. While being one of the most important tools, it can also be one of the most difficult to use and explain. Bear with me.

1. You will need this.

It's a compilation of the chatbox part in WolfieMario's guide. It contains the simplest of things needed to make a chatbox. If you need more advanced things, such as different colours, check out WolfieMario's full kit. The link is earlier in the guide if you missed it.
2. Copy and paste that into Paint.
3. Use the eyedropper tool to select the blue colour in the square in the top-left corner.
4. Select the text tool, and create a text box large enough to hold your sentence.
5. Type the name of the person and what they are going to say in that blue colour. For example:

Make sure you type the name, type a colon, type a SPACE, then type your sentence. Jagex likes grammar. They like to use a capital letter wherever they deem fit. Of course, we don't know where they deem fit, so to avoid the hassle of getting it wrong, USE CORRECT GRAMMAR.
6. Then select the black colour from the square with the eyedropper tool.
7. Then use the Bucket tool to colour in the NAME and the COLON in black. This is probably the only time you should use the Bucket tool. It should look like so.

8. Now, put it in your chatbox, like so.

9. Now, for the bottom line. This time, select the black colour and only type in the name. DO NOT type the colon. Put the text you've made so far into the bottom line of the chatbox. It should look like this:

10. It's time to add the quickchat button. This can get very tricky. It's even trickier to explain. Look at the picture below.

It should look something like that. I'll try and explain it as best as I can.

Look at the line I added to the quick chat button. It's a nice, purple line. That line needs to be aligned to the bottom of the previous letter. If you look at the original, it might make more sense.
I'm going to make the first purple line longer so you can see the aligment between the quickchat button and the letters.

I've also added another purple line going vertically. This line shows the distance the quickchat button from the previous letter: one pixel. If you understood all that, I congratulate you. You're worthy enough to become a faker. biggrin.gif
11. You're not out of the woods yet. Now you need to add the colon and the rest of the text. Once again, select the blue colour from the square and type the following:
colon, SPACE, your text, then an ASTERISK. The asterisk is very important. To get an asterisk, hold down shift and press 8. Your text should look like this.

12. There's more annoying aliging involved with the quickchat button. Put your text into the chatbox. The colon is aligned the same as the letter you last used. Using the purple line again. Pour exemple...

...et voilą!
13. Select the black colour again and turn the colon black.
14. Now all that's left is to copy and paste your chatbox onto the mini guide below it, and cover up the guidelines using that, uh, thingy above the scrollbars.

HOORAH!
I've been incredibly lazy and not abided by any of the rules below. Make sure you do.

Rules for Making a Chatbox.
Like everything else, there are unfortunately a few rules for this.
1. The 'Welcome to RuneScape' rule. Above all of the text you have added, you need to add a 'Welcome to RuneScape.' in black. Make sure 'Welcome' has a capital letter, it's spelt 'RuneScape' and not 'Runescape' and you have a full stop/period at the end. The exceptions for this rule are:
You have game switched to off, or you are concentrating the chatbox on a section other than game. For example, you have the Clan button pressed down, so you are only looking at text said by people in your clan chat.
You have more than eight lines of regular text in the chatbox, so you don't have space for your 'Welcome to RuneScape.' message. If this happens, you need to use a scrollbar that ISN'T full.
2. Alignment.
If you want to add a crown, the alignment is slightly different. Copy/paste this into Paint and zoom in to see how it's aligned.

Making transparency (In MS paint)

For many reasons, such as making the text in chatboxes, using kits, and some other stuff that I don't feel like thinking of, you will need a transparent background. But how to make transparency on MS paint? This guide will show you! ohmy.gif

There are two ways to do this.
1. Let's say I want to put this text:

into this chatbox:

But if you try this without transparency it will end up like this:

To make the text have a transparent background, all you need to do is go to Image >>> Draw Opaque. (Make sure Draw Opaque is unchecked, rather than checked).

After unchecking that, every selected color that is your secondary color will now be transparent. I would recommend just making your secondary color white, as most images already have a white background. Now you can move your text in the chatbox without the background. Like this:

2. Instead of clicking the Draw Opaque button, simply go to the Select Tool (Or the Free-Form Select Tool) and click on this button:

Everything should now work the same way as if you clicked the Draw Opaque button.

Copy/Pasting a RuneScape Character in 10 Easy Steps.
Written by: Poke
Special thanks to:
Spoiler: Click to Toggle the Spoiler.

1. Go onto RuneScape and make sure all Anti-Aliasing is turned OFF. If you're playing in SD you can skip this part.

2. Make sure nothing is obstructing your character.

3. Press Prt Scr or Alt + Prt Scr. If you're on a laptop, you may have to press Fn + Prt Scr.
4. Paste your screenshot into Paint and crop it to size.

5. Select the brush tool and make the colour white.
6. Start to go around your character with the white brush tool.

7. Make sure you fill in all the nooks and crannies. When you're done, it should look something like this:

Don't worry if it looks jaggedy or uneven. RuneScape's jaggedy and uneven. Just don't make it too jaggedy or uneven.
8. Get a new screenshot, open it up in Paint and crop it. I'm going to use the RuneScape homepage.
9. Click on either the Select or Free-form select tools. Make sure the lower of the two pictures at the bottom (the ones with the shapes) is highlighted blue. If not, click on it.

10. Copy/paste your RuneScape character into the new screenshot, and place him/her where you see fit. You can even add some text!

If you need any more help, check out the Making Transparency (In MS Paint) guide by Guitarguy. It explains the transparency parts of this (5 and 9) in better detail. Have fun!

How to make new ingame content out of old content (Photoshop)
Written by: Ewout
Special thanks to:
Spoiler: Click to Toggle the Spoiler.
Want to make a new item, but you don't have the pixel skills required? Then this guide is perfect for you!
I will explain how to make new content (in this case, some body armour) out of existing pieces.

Before you start faking you should think of how it would look like and find screenshots of the required content.
Here are the resources for my fake, and what I'll use them for:

Iron chainbody: main lower body.
Iron platebody: shoulderpads.
Black (t) platebody: trim on shoulderpads.
Runecrafter robe: the brown cloth.
Santa top: the belt.
Warlock top: the arms.

Also note: all the screenshots are in (almost) the same angle, this is vital for this type of fake!

I'll start with the shoulderpads first. I need to take the shoulderpads from the iron platebody and paste them on the shoulders of the iron chainbody.
Because hey have almost the same colour as the rest of the body and arms, I need to cut it out, as discribed in "Copy/Pasting a RuneScape Character in 10 Easy Steps."
In this case, I made the white lines in a new layer.

After this i took the "magic wand" tool and selected the area inside the white lines, make sure anti-alaising is off. If Anti-alaising is on, your shoulderpads edges will be blurry and un-runescapish. Copy the selected area and paste it, after that drag it to the shoulders of the iron chainbody.
Don't worry if it doesn't fit correctly, we will fix this later, just make sure it is in the right position.

Now, the trim: this one is a different colour than the background and area surrounding it, so i can easily select it with the magic wand tool, copy and paste on the right location.

In this case, the trim was in the same coulour as the shoulderpads so it looked weird, my solution was pressing crtl+u and making it lighter.

Now you should have three layers, one with the chainbody, one with shoulderpads and one with trim.
As you can see parts of the green body are sticking out, but we'll just let that be for now.
What I did do was pixel change some pixels near the edge of the shoulderpads, because their colours were contrasting with the trim.

After explaining the two most frequently used methods, I can start selecting the brown parts of the runecrafter top with the magic wand tool.
Beware! Sometimes you get more pixel than you want, in that case right-click on the selection and click "select inverse". Now lower the tolerance of the magic wand and click the extra pixels. Click "select inverse" again after you checked all the extra pixels and copy and paste.
Pictures of "to many pixels":
Spoiler: Click to Toggle the Spoiler.

I did the same with the belt, and pasted it in a different location, or else I would have had two belts. (The one form my original pants, and the santa costume one)

The warlock top poses a challenge: the brown parts are in the same colour as the background, the orange is not.
This is how i fixed it:

I isolated the brown parts I needed from the similar colours, and then I selected the brown and orange I needed with the magic wand tool.

Paste everything in place and use crtl+u to change the opacity of the arms and you get this:

Now create a new layer and pixel a background over the parts of the skin and shirt to get the full version. I also change the belt a bit.
I decided to add some more colour by selecting layers, changing contrasts and using crtl+u, and this is my result:

You can do this with npcs, houses, objects, items in your inventory or even emotes!
Have fun faking!

How to Make Overhead Text
Written by: Poke
Special thanks to:
Spoiler: Click to Toggle the Spoiler.
This guide uses Paint.
1. On Paint, select the text button and make a text box. If the text toolbar isn't open, click on View > Text toolbar.
2. Make the toolbar look like this.

3. Type in what you want to say IN BLACK.

4. Copy/paste the message and select the yellow colour on your palette. Start at black and go along seven. If you still can't find it, use this picture for reference.

5. Make a new textbox and copy/paste the message into there. It should come up in that yellow colour. If it doesn't, repeat step four.
6. You should now have two pieces of text, one black and one yellow. Drag the yellow one onto the black so the yellow one is one pixel up and one pixel to the left of the black text.

7. Copy/paste your finished product onto a screenshot

Tada!

How to Contribute to this Guide.
Written by: Poke.
Special thanks to:
Spoiler: Click to Toggle the Spoiler.
This guide is for helping beginner fakers get to grips with faking. If you wish to contribute, do so. There are a few guidelines first.
1. Title, written by and special thanks.
Use the following code:
CODE
[p][size=4][u]<Title of your guide>[/u][/size]
[b]Written by:[/b] <Your name>
[b]Special thanks to:[/b] <Anyone who helped you>
[spoiler]
<Your guide goes here>
[/spoiler][/p]

2. Spoiler tags
Put everything below the title, written by and special thanks in a spoiler tag. This is for organisation.
3. Pictures.
Pictures are great to explain a guide better. To set a good example, pictures MUST be saved as a .PNG or a high quality .JPEG. Animations are saved as a .GIF. Don't overload your guide with pictures. Large pictures are reccommended to be put in a spoiler tag. Cropping is your friend.
4. Grammar + Spelling.
Grammar and spelling isn't a necessity, but it makes your guide easier to read and also makes it look more intelligent and helpful.
5. This guide.
This guide on writing guides (tongue.gif) will always stay at the bottom of the thread.
6. Contributing to a previously existing guide.
If you wish to contribute to a previously existing guide, say what guide it is and include a quote of part of the guide so I can tell which guide it is and where you want to add it. Then add your contribution. You can contribute to this guide on writing guides (tongue.gif again).

How to Make RuneScape Content in Photoshop
Written by: Hermit A
Special thanks to:
Spoiler: Click to Toggle the Spoiler.

In one of my fakes I made stone out of the freeze emotion. But how? Here's how:
I logged into RuneScape and took a screenshot of me doing the freeze emotion:

Then I have uploaded it into PS:

I have logged into RuneScape again, took a screenshot of a RuneScape rock and uploaded it to PS:

I have selected the rock with the magic wand tool:

I have copied and pasted the rock into the first screenshot:

I have selected the ice with the magic wand tool:

Now the hard part (though that tool isn't so complicated): the clone stamp tool:
First, copy and paste the ice that you selected just so it will have it's own layer and then it will be an easier job. Hold Alt and click anywhere on the rock then leave Alt. Then start painting the ice. But if you start painting too far from where you clicked when you held Alt, you will start painting with the wrong colour. So then hold alt and click somewhere on the rock again, and paint the ice again:

As shown here, I have toggled layer Background's visibility off. It also makes the job easier.
Then I have deleted the layer of the rock:

And now you know how to make RuneScapish rocks out of RuneScape ice!

If you are using layers, like on Gimp, Photoshop and other image editing programs that have layers you would delete the layer you pasted the red brackets on. Make sure you only have the Red Brackets on that layer.

You can do this with npcs, houses, object or even items in your inventory!
Have fun faking!

About the overhead text, any idea on how to align it above a players/npcs head?

It's centered over the head and slightly touches the head itself.
With a weapon that goves above the head (e.g. Standard, Dharok's Axe) the text goes above that.

If it's a large monster (say, the KBD, Kalphite Queen, Jad, etc.), the overhead text goes about halfway up the monster's body, I think. Although I don't think large monsters talk much, really. They just attack me and send me back to Falador. sad.gif

That only happens if you have a small screen, most of the time it's normal, and it's always normal in fullscreen

Seeing as Ewout bumped this, you should probably ask a mod to sticky this topic before it gets closed.

It's not popular enough to be stickied.

And who says they'll find out.

It's a useful topic IMO, so if it dies it would be a shame. slanty.gif
Ewout
Or we could copy and paste it in the existing topic?
Maybe someone should organize all existing and relevant faking guides (these guides, wolfies kits, ...) into one topic to be stickyfied happy.gif

Also, if a monster's body takes up more than one horizontal space (such as a cow), it's centered over their body, not the head happy.gif
