Hope origins
The sun’s radiant light illuminated the cracked pavement in front of Charlie and his Labrador Hope. Hope tried to tear a bit of green grass that was sprouted out of one of the cracks. Charlie tugged her angrily and swore.
‘’Stupid dog. ‘’ he muttered and he kicked her with his converse trainers.
Hope whimpered.
Charlie opened his grandmother’s gate and rang the doorbell. He heard a chair move out of place, a sigh and the door open. His grandmother stood there, hands on hips.
‘’Charlie, what time do you call this.’’ she scolded him angrily.
Charlie smirked and looked at his watch.
‘’Seven o clock.’’ he said sarcastically.
‘’Don’t you get sassy with Me.’’ she said angrily and whacked him over the head.
‘’Oi!’’ said Charlie as he ducked out of the way.
His grandmother sighed.
‘’Dinners on the table.’’ She said to him grudgingly. She bent down and ruffled the dog’s golden coat. The dog barked in happiness.
‘’Good doggy. Did the nasty man take you outside you too long? Yes he did, oh yes yes he did.’’ She said happily as if she was talking to a toddler.
Jealously seethed through Charlie as he sat down for his supper, all she was interested in was that dog. She hated Charlie’s guts. Oh, well he was nearing 23 now and as soon as he could afford his own place, he would be out of this dump that smelt of cats and coffee.
Hope walked into the living room and leaped onto the sofa. She snuggled up against a red cushion and fell asleep. Charlie looked at her with disgust. He turned back to his supper and was just about to finish the mouthful of sausage when a plan came into his head. It was a nasty plan, and if his Grandmother knew she would certainly kick him out. But Charlie didn’t care. He was sick of this bloody dog. Slowly Charlie got up and grabbed the dog gently. She remained asleep in his arms.
He checked for his Grandmother in the hallway, not there. He opened the cellar door and placed her on the floor.
‘’Let’s see how Grandmother reacts now that her precious little baby puppy has gone missing.’’ he smiled and he walked outside, locking the cellar from the outside.
An explosion. Charlie screamed as his hands started to wrinkled and his grandmother turned into a skeleton. Charlie felt his heart go dead. He died, slumped against the same red sofa Hope has snuggled up against a few minutes ago. The house was silent except for the barking in the cellar.
Hope had been confused these past few weeks. She tried to open the thick door in front of her but it wouldn’t budge. She managed to break open a sack of pork and some wine smashed on the floor but she couldn’t get out. She barked again. No one came. Just then she felt a golf ball smash the cellar window letting some light in the dim surroundings.
Hope screwed up her eyes. Light partially blinding her. She clambered out of the cellar window and into the back yard. She leapt over a fence and arrived in a car park. A man stood that looked like Charlie. She ran up to him growling, as if to say ‘’get away from me.’’ The man looked at her and slowly, her hostility started to fade. It was if, the man’s smile reminded her of her owners smile.
The man cracked open some can and water came out of it. She dashed over it and slurped it up eagerly. This man had food; she should follow him to see if he had any more.
The man walked into a car and Hope followed him. The man was reluctant for a minute but he started driving. She saw the sunset over the pavement and it reminded her of Charlie but he was gone now. They drove into the sunset, this was a new beginning.
