Full Version: Advisors And Objectives
Sal's RuneScape Forum > Everything RuneScape > RuneScape Updates & News
finisterra
Today’s update sees a rework to the very earliest portions of the game, plus a new feature called the objective system, which can be accessed via the new tab on the side interface (the signpost icon left of the Friends List).

Objective system

The objective system allows you to set yourself an objective to work towards, be that a specific skill level or the completion of a certain quest. This can either be randomly generated or something of your own choosing. The system will then track how you are doing in meeting that objective.

It was initially developed with new players in mind, as it will give those who are boggled by the vast array of things to do in RuneScape something to focus upon, and provide some direction as to the sorts of things they could be aiming for. We have, however, designed it in such a way that we hope more experienced players will find of use, and that they too will enjoy setting themselves goals and tracking their progress towards them.

New tutorial and Advisor system

The previous tutorial and the Lumbridge tutors were not giving the best first impression of RuneScape to new players, nor were they the most effective way of teaching new players how to play the game. Much of the information they gave was not of interest to players until later on in the game, and came across as too wordy and boring. We’ve found that most players prefer to get stuck into the game and figure things out by actually playing.

As such, a lot of this information has been moved out of the tutorial, and the tutorial has been replaced with a slightly shorter introduction to the game, which focuses on the basic controls. Much of the information that was taught in the previous tutorial can now be accessed as mini tutorials, as and when players want to learn, through the new advisor system.

The advisor is a helpful old fellow by the name of Roddeck, who can be found by clicking on the new “question mark” button (next to the logout button). The advisor system works dynamically depending on where you are and what you are doing at the time. You can either do a mini tutorial (a much more interactive way of learning things) or “Ask Roddeck for advice” (if you just want a quick answer).

The advisor system currently only covers basic activities, but we are planning to flesh it out to cover more skills and activities.

Starting area

We’ve defined an area of the game as the starting area, in which you can access the new tutorials, as well as making it a safer area for new players. There are guards and gates placed at the various entrances to the starting area, so new players can tell where the borders are. The area is quite big, covering Lumbridge, Varrock and Draynor.

The gates have been designed so as not to slow down more experienced players (i.e. everyone with a total level of 60 or more). Simply click on the other side of the gate in the game window (or on the minimap) and you will automatically walk through, without any more clicks than normal. Players with a total level below 60 will need to confirm that they really do wish to leave the starting area.

Other changes

We’ve made various other changes due to the above:
  • As these mini tutorials are more interactive, they’ve rendered obsolete some previous features we had in Lumbridge for helping new players. These features had built up over the years and were making Lumbridge feel rather cluttered, so you’ll find that most of the Lumbridge tutors and the Lumbridge money making features have been removed from the game. The items which you could previously get for free from the tutors are now available as free samples from certain shops.
  • The Air Altar’s location has moved to southwest of Varrock, next to the River Lum. It’s the same distance from Varrock’s west bank as it used to be from Falador’s east bank.
  • We’ve added a new fishing shop to Lumbridge.
  • A new tanner has set up shop in southwest Varrock.
  • A new pottery has been opened in Draynor Village.
  • A new bridge has been built over the River Lum (near the Champions’ Guild).
  • Small changes have been made to some easy and beginner Achievement Diary tasks. Also, the “Craft 196 air runes simultaneously” task in the Falador Achievement Diary has changed to “Craft 140 mind runes simultaneously”.
  • Woodcutting skillcapes can now be bought from Wilfred, who can be found among the trees north of Falador.
  • Goblins and giant spiders now have slightly improved drop tables.

I total agree with you there.

The objective systemis what fills the empty tab.

Looks great, the objective system will be useful and the new bridge by Champion's Guild will be really helpful, no matter how high I get my agility I always fall in going across the stepping stones xd.gif Sucks that you can only set one objective at a time though, I normally have a huge list of them.
one kid wonder
they moved the air alter????????

what use are the air runecrafting gloves + explorers ring method now? angry.gif
Ann
Awesome, now when will they add a play-list for music? wink.gif
Donovan
I was hoping objectives would work with level 99 goals. slanty.gif

Oh wow they do, right click the skill tab of your choice and "Set objective". biggrin.gif

Liking the new tutorial though, the island was a pain to go through every time you create a new account.
Blyaunte
Obviously this is the "set up" for the "new" format of the game, wherein they no longer define certain areas as "members" and the other as "non-members".

Henceforth, it will be "beginners" and "experienced" players ...

Objective system is quite good, I like it, I like player about with the advisor system as I like playing with new updates,of course it would get boring but it is still satisfying to have a play. Starting area is meh to me but I suppose it would help newer players.

Fishing shop in lumbridge is useless to me, tanner shop is interesting, new bridge is useful, the pottery would help get my crafting level up I suppose, goblin and spiders drops, what are they?

Oh my god.

You should get your Cooking for 62 to 63.
Cooking food helps you cook more food.

NO DUH!

The new tutorial. on one of my test accounts.. God its boring. I've been waiting for this bomb to go off for 5 minutes now.

Objective: Increase your Woodcutting level from level 90 to level 91.
Description: You only need a little more XP to get level 91 in Woodcutting.

(I have exactly the experience needed for 90 Woodcutting, one less and I'd be 89, with 550k+ needed for 91)

What the?!

Woodcutting tutorial from Jagex. How to cut and sell logs.

Go here, cut and sell. You'll have profit in no time!

Logs sell for 1gp on the general store.

I fought a goblin with my awesome free bronze dagger.

At 6hp it told me to run away and speak to my advisor.

I WANTED TO KILL THE FREAKING GOBLIN, LET ME!

Seriously! God, they say it isn't a kids game, and then they tell us to run home and talk to mummy!

I just ignored it, and killed the goblin anyway. Pah.

i think the objectives is gd but sadly u cant set noe for cash or itmes n only 1 at a time but brill yay first post ever for me in this section
Hawk
If you are maxed, the objective tabs says "Go outside" tongue.gif.

And if you set your farming goal to 98, it says that increasing your farming level gains a greater yield when harvesting. Since when has this been true?

Jagex better add a way to turn this off... my god.. they turning runescape into some next kindergarden crap.

I laughed so hard at this. laugh.gif

Anyways, I only had the chance before I went to school to glance over it. Can't really give a final opinion on this yet, though the objectives seem odd...

This was a complete and utter waste of a tab space. It basically just picks a random skill and tells you to level it up once or twice. slanty.gif Now I'm normally not one to bash Jagex, but that was a pretty bad update.

Anyone know where the new Air Altar and Tannery is? Tannery isn't on the map and I went looking for the Air Altar to no avail. D:

Not the most useful updates. New players don't need that much attention. Like a gate if they want to go past draynor? sleep.gif

The Objective thing...hmm...its OK, but still, not very useful. Not exactly a great motivator.

Off topic, did they update the login music because it sounds way different to me now. Either that or that new sound driver I installed is awesome tongue.gif

The new air altar is just a bit south west of gertrude's house, and the tanner is in the house just west of the apothecary

If a pure can't train a few skills so they have over 60 total then they have a problem. You start with what 34 total? That's 26 levels to get to 60 which is not exactly hard I don't think.

Also tanner in varrock doesn't have right click option. =(
AnImp3HitMe
I hit random objectives a lot looking at what it told me...some were saying to do X so that you could do a quest..I thought that was neat. Also it was nice seeing the percentage ar go up ever ZMI run so I knew the progress and how much progress per trip.

Yes, I liked that too. I am unlikely to use it to actually worry about a specific skill level in general but, when it tells me if I get this level then I can do this quest, EXCELLENT! I am a big fan of questing and have been known to pour over the quest requirements on Sal's and see what I am ready for vs what I just need a few more levels to complete. This feature makes it easier to plan out what quest I am doing next. Soon the Quest Cape will be MIIIINNNNNEEE *Insert evil-type laughter here*

As for other updates: Like the new bridge, came in handy when I wanted to skip over to Lumby from Varrock and forgot I was out of Lumbridge teletabs and was on Lunar Spellbook.
Don't really feel one way or the other about the advisors, hope they help new players. I am not crazy about the defined safe area. Even when you run through it slows you down a bit. Not too badly, I am sure I'll get used to it.
Blingking502
Great update! The only thing that would make the Objective System better is the ability to have non-skill objectives, like a certain number of items or kill a monster how ever many times.

It's about time they put a bridge there...

What's the motive behind the Air Alter move?

I don't like it that you can't set big goals. You can only set goals that are 1-2 levels from your current level, not 10+ levels. Otherwise it's cool.

If you go into your total level screen and right click on any skill and chose set objective a box comes up in the chat area that says: Enter a level you'd like to reach. You can set it from one above your current level all the way to 99.

Isn't there an option that says you'd rather work for X?

Then your current job gets deleted and you get a new one assigned.
